Hi, just wanted to introduce myself to the forum.

My name is alicat, i am 33 yrs old and i have been suffering from agoraphobia for nearly 8 years now. It started when my mum had a heart attack and the shock was unbearable, she survived but i am constantly watching her and I call her every day just to make sure she is ok. I also found out my partner had a gambling problem as well as a canabis problem at around the same time. He was heavily in debt.

STRESS was amajor issue for me.

I have tried councelling but it had no effect, and i have also taken St Johns Wort which was very good but have now stopped that as i want to see how i go.

I wont go out without my partner and rely on him for all my day to day activities such as taking my daughter to school, shopping and anything else i might need to go out for. I am ok as long as i am with him but when im on my own i am terrible.

I also hate it when i am on my own at night, if he has gone out with friends or fishing i get worked up and have to phone him to find out how long he will be.
IT IS DRIVING ME MAD. i get so frustrated with myself that i cant go out and solcialise or meet friends (who have disappeared over the years).

I have even tried to get hold of Paul Mckenna to see if he will help me but i can only get hold of his NLP training school.

It is good to know i am not the only one who feels like this and i look forward to sharing my life with you and learning about your life.

look forward to making new friends

Alicat

:) hi alicat,
your situation sounds very similar to mine, i also have agorophobia although can do a reasonable amount with my husband, and i also have a thing about being on my own which is currently out of control.

i am having cbt because the dependancy actually means i have little crises every now and then because i too want to be FREE but find it extremely difficult to do it:wacko:

however the problem is that when you try to let go of your safety mechanisms(people in our case) we actually feel more out of control at first, so it can actually be quite a miserable time,:weep: and im doing therapy when im in a crisis so its proving very very difficult and somedays i dont know whether im coming or going.
hope i can be of some help? its good to know your not alone
all the best emmaxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:hugs:

Hi Alicat, welcome to NMP, you will find so much support and advice here, I have just rejoined after quite a long absence so feel like a newcomer all over again. I totally sympathize with you, I am 33 also and have 3 children and suffered agrophbia for about 12 months after 2nd child was born in 2000, it started after my first panic attack and I wouldn't leave the house without my partner or my mum and I became totally dependent on them both, my daughter had to live with my mum for 12 months as we lived a bus ride away from the school and I couldn't take her so because my mum lived within walking distance from the school it was easier for her to live there but it broke my heart to be separated from her and I felt so frustrated that I was couldn't be a proper mum to her or my baby son.it was an uphill struggle to get better but I was determined not to become a prisoner in my own home. the turning point was reading a book by Claire weeks called self help for your nerves and I also think I read the one she wrote about agorophobia but I cna't remember if it was by her as it was so long ago. The people on this site have helped me so much in the past, I conquered my fears but I can't pretend it has been easy and there have been many struggles along the way, I am no longer agorophobic but I have recently suffered a relapse with depression and anxiety brought on by stress. I am here if you need to talk and I hope I can help you as much as I can.
Take care
Lisax
