Broat?

I tend to like older films.

Chinatown
Casablanca
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
Lawrence of Arabia

Thought Goodfellas was the best gangster film ever made followed by Casino

There are just so many great films. Good question.

Gone With the Wind...wow...Gable was fantastic as was Leigh. I'm with you Magic.

Out of Africa...I can so relate to what Redford's character was going through...up until the crash of course:D

The Untouchables was a pretty good film
So was The Sting
Top films for me have to be The Green Mile
The Shawshank Redemption. It's a Wonderful Life.
And for romantic stuff, Pretty Woman never tires for me.
The Matrix films are good for a bit of kick action and The Die Hard films.
I too love the old classics. Dr Zhivago, Spartacus, Hitchcock Films.

I'm with you on Pacino. So many great performances. Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, And Justice for All...but I thought his very best performance was in Donnie Brasco. I have never seen a better portrayal of a completely empty person. A great actor. "Fugetaboutit"

Being that we're in the holiday season, one I always watch at least once is A Christmas Story... "You'll shoot your eye out kid!"

In fact I proposed to my wife using the Christmas Story as inspiration. I knew she wanted to get married but I had just gone through a heart attack and cancer so things were kind of crazy. I bought the ring and planned my strategy. I didn't skimp at Christmas and bought her a lot of nice things. Now, she's from Ecuador and raised Catholic. In her country, the family goes to church for midnight mass, then comes home, eats a big meal and opens presents. Quite different than here in the US.

So... it's Christmas Eve and she wants to open at least one present. I refuse stating US tradition and we go to bed (I could tell she was disappointed - plan working perfectly!). Around midnight or so, I wake up to pee and when I come back to bed, she's awake, says Merry Christmas and asks if we could open some presents ~lol~ Again I refuse and she says "Ok" with disappointment in her voice. I laid there for a moment and asked if she wants to open presents now. Of course it was a resounding "YES!!" I tell her to put some coffee on and she's off...

I place the ring in my pocket and come downstairs. She waits patiently for around 30 minutes until I'm awake and ready and off we go opening presents. After all was said and done she says "Well, that's everything"... I ask here if Santa got her everything she wanted and and she says "Yes" but with just a tinge of disappointment in her voice (again... plan working perfectly! ~lol~). Then I go into my speech, take the ring out and propose. She was in tears almost immediately. It was a take on Ralphie getting his Red Rider BB Gun ;)

I think Michael Madsen was the best actor in that film and outperformed everyone including Al Pacino. He's a very underrated actor and should've been cast in many more gangster movies.

I disagree, Hollow. I think Madsen is a very good actor and was good in the film but for me it was Pacino's best roll (which is saying a lot)...but it is subjective of course. Madsen is very good though and he just about always plays a heavy...Reservoir Dogs and The Getaway come to mind...and I hated him in each one...so he definitely plays a good bad guy.

Madsen was good in a series that was reminiscent of The Equaliser. It was on years ago, I can't remember the name withouot checking. Not seen it out over here like many US short runs but I enjoyed it and his role in it was excellent.

His sister, Virginia Madsen was in a pretty good movie a few years ago - Sideways. Pretty funny.

Well as you guys have stolen my Pacino and Tarantino choices ( great films ) I'll give a short list from growing up to grouchy old man , loved Clint Eastwood westerns as a kid (70s ) then came star wars , Indiana jones ( classics that I'd still watch ) moving on monty pythons life of Brian ( welease wroderick :roflmao:) ,
Easy no brainer watching , Tremors it still makes me laugh oh and goonies .
Blues brothers .
Time on your hands then watch The dear hunter
One flew over cuckoos nest
90s Trainspotting ( can't believe it's been twenty years ) T2 not so good .
Probably the film I've watched most times is Cast away , I just love the sea and find it calming , maybe not the plane crash bit .
I could go on and on so here are two I haven't seen yet but feel I should , oldies but on my sky box waiting for me to get round to watching , Raging bull and easy rider .
One I watched and wish I hadn't Tom cruise Eyes wide shut , nothing happened then nothing else happens the suspense builds up to nothing happening then the big finale, Nothing freaking happens , two hours of my life I will never get back which could have been spent worrying over nothing .
Dog needs to go out for pee , bye . :D

Hard Times with Charles Bronson - a very good movie - easily his best - and perhaps his only good movie with him in the lead.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. John Wayne and Lee Marvin. One of the best good vs. evil scenes of all time..."That's my steak Valance."

Lola , I could have castaway on without the picture I just love the sea sounds and storms , and I like the concept Of surviving when everyone else has died , do you sink or swim ?
Pulp fiction as well just a great soundtrack, Tarantino pulls you in with catchy music then you are hooked and it turns violent and bloody and you don't know how to feel .
Some old films are timeless and do stand the test of time with special effects, wizard of oz was made before my mum was born yet i watched it , my daughters watched it and my grandkids , same goes for willy wonker , the remakes are shite .
Alien was a favourite and that's getting on now 1979 I think .
A nice heart warmer is The fastest Indian , Anthony Hopkins , true storey and Hopkins is a bit of a legend .

1939 is generally regarded as the very best year in film. I think I'd agree

The Wizard of Oz
Goodbye Mr Chips
Gone With the Wind
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Dark Victory
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Stagecoach
Wuthering Heights
Ninotchka
Of Mice and Men
The Rains Came
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Jesse James

Believe it or not the list could go on. Such a great time for movies.

Here's a very funny fight scene between girls from a lesser known film from 39...A Girl Must Live...with a very young Lily Palmer (later married to Rex Harrison)
