I was having a chat today about cinemas and just out of curiosity, I was wondering how people cope with cinemas and theatres?

I always have to sit on the end of the row and have plenty of drinks with me:blush: . Always need to know where the toilet is too:blush: . I was discussing this with a friend from here and she said that there probably wouldn't be enough seats if we had a NMP bus trip lol coz we would all want to sit at the end of a row lol:shades: Luckily you don't have to talk during a film so it wouldn't be too anti social

Steph,

that made me chuckle, the vision of all the end seats being filled but no-one in the middle! I went to a school church service with a friend of mine one time and she likes the edge too, it was a hairy moment as I thought we might fall out about who got it! She did!

I normally see how I am feeling metaly and physically before going along to see a film or play, and if I'm not feeling too panicky and shaky I try to make myself go to the cinema or theatre and see the film I'm really excited about seeing. I'll sit at the back of the cinema during a film as I find sitting at the front uncomfortable, normally because of the loud noise on screen. At the start, I feel a bit panicky feeling a bit dizzy, breathing deeply etc., but once the film really gets going, I get more focused on it and my anxiety starts to decrease.

Fortunatly, I've never had a time when I've left a film half way through proabably because every film I've seen at the cinema has been good, and so has taken my attention of from being panicky.

Well mate, you already know about me lol! But thought I would vote anyway!

I never used to have a bother with cinemas before my anxiety etc, but now I have to be sitting at the edge of a row and nearest the exit! This is because my first sort of major panic attack that I had at the beginning was in a cinema, so it has taken a lot for me to go back. I had to leave near the end of the film as my stomach was in agony, and I was dizzy and feeling sick etc etc etc. It was terrifying, as at that point I didn't know it was a panic attack. I went a long time without going to the cinema, but now I can go as long as I am nearest the exit and at the end of the row, just incase!

LOL Steph! :yesyes:

I can sit anywhere, although my 'natural' preference is to be near the front to see the people up close.

Maybe even that is psychological as I have a need to be with people and tend to look up to others as they are likely to be better looking, have a better body and younger! So being closer to these people has a meaning, although I'm not conscious of that.

Anyway, I don't go out very often, but if someone came and knocked on my door and said "Get ready, we're off in 30 minutes", I'd probably go and enjoy myself!

I voted that I prefer to sit at the end of a row.

I don't really have a problem with the theatre or cinema, as in I don't experience panic or anything like that. The most I can say is that I feel a bit uncomfortable if I have to sit next to a stranger just because I worry who will sit next to me - not comfortable with men and also I have a thing about needing personal space around me.

So I tend to try to sit at the end of a row and then I don't have any problems at all.

Truth is I can't!!
I think it's how loud it is cuz I really don't mind alot of people as much anymore but loud noises and bright lights still bother me sometimes.
Forget about the 4th of July fireworks - won't catch me anywhere near that either - LOL

I voted "anywhere I don't mind". Ideally I prefer the end of a row, partly due to it being easier to move for other people to barge past to their seats and partly as I can escape easily! Hubby prefers the end as he has long legs and can stretch out better! Generally I am happy to sit anywhere though and have sat right in the middle of rows loads of times since having anx. This was all at the theatre as we don't go the the cinema.

I voted at the end of the row too.

I never really had much of problem with the cinema years ago when they were much smaller and my agoraphobia wasn't as bad as it is now.

I had a period of 20yrs when I never went to the cinema at all and when I did they had all changed to these huge multiplex things and I have to say it was quite a culture shock.

I haven't been very often in recent years as I do find it takes me so long to stop being anxious that I tend to miss all the start of the film. By the time I am relaxed and enjoying the film it's pretty much half way through

Last film I saw was Casino Royale and I waited till the very last day it was on so that it wouldn't be busy and although I enjoyed it I did notice later on when I watched the same film on DVD at home that I had missed loads of it as I think I was concentrating too much on my anxiety and not the film

I have voted that i would sit at the back or on the edge of a row but this isn't strictly true i suppose. But my option was not there really.
I don't really go as a rule but we treated our youngest yesterday and went to see Shrek 3. I was anxious and the movie itself makes me very dizzy and my ears funny. I sat through it, managed ok i suppose, but afterwards makes me worse than ever.
I was very unsteady and dizzy afterwards, i was clinging onto my hubby like i was drunk. I asked my hubby why he thought it affected me like this and why i used to be ok in the cinema. He thought it might be because i was watching a 2d image and i needed time to adjust afterwards to 3d again. I thought it might be the surround sound and my ears or because my head had been quite still for a while and when i got up to go out my head was moving around alot again. I just don't know. All i know is for half an hour after i came out the world was spinning and i couldn't look down at all. I got back to the car and checked my bp and it was fine. So i just don't know, i suppose i must be weird!x
