My GP tested me because of persistant flank/back pain yesterday and the dipstick test showed Protein, Lucocytes(?) and Blood!!! Got given antibiotics (which have made me sick!) for a possible UTI.
But they got my Urine back from the lab testing this morning and apparently there's no infection....

Which one is likely to be right? I'm having shortness of breath and I'm worried. :'(

The lab test will be correct. What did the lab test show in regards to protein etc?

They didn't tell me anything... :( They just said I wasn't infected...but I'm still in pain, not weeing much and short of breath :( I don't know what to think anymore...

When your urine gets sent to the lab a urinalysis is done. That’s standard. They then do a culture to see if any bacteria grows. If it does then that means you have an infection. The doctor who sent the urine to the lab would have the results of the urinalysis. Those results will give the same information (and more) as the dipstick only they will be much more accurate. Dipstick tests are often wrong. The urinalysis will be correct. Protein etc may not have been present when the lab tested the urine. Ask your doctor what the report showed. Anxiety is very possibly what is causing the frequent urination and pain.

Thank you very much.
I'm just scared...my anxiety has been through the roof because of all the tests I've had to go through recently...all constant doctors and hospitals...
And everyone I try and get help from is nasty and abrupt with me, whether it be friends, family or hospital staff. :( I'm struggling to cope.

It’s possible that the urinalysis was normal. You have the right to know what the results were so tell your doctor you want a copy of the report. If you have a history of health anxiety then people eventually get sick of it. Your family, friends and medical staff teach a point where they don’t know what to say to you because nothing works. So they become frustrated. Are you seeing a therapist?

btw shortness of breath is a classic anxiety symptom. Walk to the corner at a normal pace. If you aren’t puffing and panting when you get there you don’t have shortness of breath.

I know, I'm fed up of myself :(
I've just managed to walk up and down the stairs without being too out of breath and walked around...so I guess I'm ok...I just don't feel like it.

The doctor found Blood and Protein in my Urine....and Lucocytes...they suspected infection...but when it was sent off for Analysis there was no infection and they just left me to it.

Maybe they didn't check protein levels at the lab and just bypassed a kidney function test? I've still got pain in my back, like a pulled muscle but I haven't....

I can't face having to go back to them, as my Doctor's are terrible, but I'm worried they've overlooked the protein and blood and just checked for infection.

I take a Vitamin C supplement, you see because my diet isn't good and I'm always getting colds and flu and I was fed up of it, so I started taking Vitamin C. I've heard taking Vitamin C can damage your kidneys and even cause them to fail and kill you and I didn't know until I googled it.

I'm terrified and convinced my kidney's are damaged and are going to fail....
I don't know what to do :'(

Hi there,

Firstly, I don’t think you have kidney failure, so relax, right now :-).
Your dr would know if you had renal failure and you would have more hand back pain. The pain is interesting though as the thing that came to mind with me was a kidney stone. This can also cause blood and back pain. Maybe worth another visit and run kidney stones past them. Some can pass on their own, others require ultrasound or other procedures but you’d be in a lot of pain if it was serious.

Your threads have been merged as they are about the same thing.

Sorry, it was because I hadn't mentioned taking the Vitamin C....
I did run Kidney stones by them actually, but they said I'd be in a lot more pain and I'd 'know about it...'

So what is your doctor suggesting is causing the protein, blood etc? Surely they intend to investigate further.

I spent half of last year being investigated for microscopic blood in my urine. I had so many urine tests done that it became part of my life. I also had kidney and bladder tests done including a CT scan and a cystoscopy. But I had recurrent UTIs. Nothing was found. I also did not have protein in my urine but my friend is currently being investigated for protein in her urine.

Hi

Have not posted here in over a year but occasionally come in for a lurk.

Your thread stuck a chord with me and I feel I need to help. I went to the doctor after I what I now recognise were anxiety related symptoms following my father's death from kidney failure - caused by bladder cancer. But at the time I thought the pain was caused by my kidneys going. I have two small children and they were all I could think about.

I took the dipstick test which said elevated protein. You can probably imagine what that did to me. Unfortunately the doctor didn't have the best command of English nor did he realise I was anxious so I went on assuming the worst. A lot of googling, a lot of incorrect self diagnosis which caused extreme terror - that's not a figure of speech - and symptoms that took nearly three years to get over and robbed me of a lot of my life.

After about six months I finally found the right doctor who explained that the dipsticks are 7 cent wonders that routinely show false positives. The lab tests are far more accurate.

Sounds like the same thing happened to you. if there was a problem with your lab test by now you would have been referred to a renal specialist.

Please, please don't be like me. Accept that you are fine - it really is possible despite what you are feeling now!!! - find a doctor you can talk to about your anxiety and go from there. Quick as you can.

Sincerely, all the best.

Thank you so much, your messages really have helped, I'm honestly so appreciative.

Got myself into a bit of a state today though, as I've had loose stools, stomach pains, nausea and I have been drinking loads but not urinating!!! And when I do go it's dark coloured and not much there...drinking tea normally gets me going but even that's not done anything and I'm so, so worried.

Even though the doctor's said that the urinalysis was ok, I'm scared they've made a mistake.

I mentioned to my friend that I wasn't peeing much but drinking loads and he goes 'it means your kidney's working properly that....' and I've freaked out....I was out for the day and had to come straight home...and now I'm worried about drinking too much because if I'm retaining it, there's no point.

I'm going to have to wait until Monday to go back to the Doctor's....
There's definitely something else going on, I can feel it.

Update guys....really, really bad now. Bright yellow discharge and now very visible blood in Urine... in a LOT of pain and feel really bad. I can't be imagining all this, there must be SOMETHING even if they say there's no infection.
If I go back tomorrow they won't do anything because they'll say my Urine has no infection....what should I do? I just said to my sister now, I'm suicidal with all this worry :'(

If you are sure that the blood is not due to menstruation you need to get yourself to the doctor immediately. Blood in your urine is not normal. The doctor is not going to ignore the symptoms you are describing. He will probably want to send a sample of your urine to the lab to be tested again, in case you do have an infection. If you don’t then he will refer you for further investigation. Anxiety does not cause blood in urine.

I went back to the doctor's this morning...still won't believe me about my kidneys...
I feel terrible because I've took vitamin C for years and I think I've damaged them with that :( I didn't realise that they could damage you :(
Just got brushed off again and given antibiotics that I'm scared of taking :( I may go to A&E soon...I've had enough...
