View Full Version : still worried about tumor

25th December - smelt my greasy
28th December - 7th Jan - felt i was smelling orange faintly everywhere, most the time there was a source.
7th Jan - 20th Jan - bonfire smell
20th jan - present - bacony smokey smell. Current one I associate with heating, bonfires. If I'm with someone they smell it too but I'm so worried its phantom. Times I've walked away from a smell ans walked back to same place it's there. Been odd smokey smell I've linked go smokers, in the air etc. Tonight I'm on edge because heating plus candles plus dryer plus incense makes me think I'm smelling this smell again.

I'd been using logic and been happier and stopped worryong about smells that were likely real, now Im convinced about phantom smells again. it's a constant sad feeling of worry and I hate it.

---------- Post added at 21:23 ---------- Previous post was at 21:23 ----------

bacony smell is linked to heating that is on in places.

---------- Post added at 21:26 ---------- Previous post was at 21:23 ----------

I was so much happier when I wasn't worrying and using logic. But I worry What If this is a sign of a tumor?

---------- Post added at 21:37 ---------- Previous post was at 21:26 ----------

No other reason.

I literally come to conclusion its ok, then triggered then pnanic, then calm self down, logic then trigger.

You don't have a brain tumour but make that call and get some help.

How is the pregnancy coming along?

What about the ENT referral?

helenhoo
09-02-18, 22:45
Pregnancy is great, first appointment tomorrow so nervous about that.

No clue about ENT as the doctors lost my midwife refferal!

Nic, I'm worried about smells still. As mentioned I'd been doing well usig loads of logic. Triggered today as smell in Tesco that was in one place, there when I walked back. Triggered by smell of tumble dryer too.

nomorepanic
09-02-18, 22:48
Appointment with who?

What has a midwife referral got to do with ENT and have you asked them to refer you?

Well you will always get smells that is what our nose is for

helenhoo
09-02-18, 22:58
they lost my midwife appointment so probably lost ENT one too.

I'm worried, almost convinced theyre phantom. I feel so sad.

Who are you seeing tomorrow then?

Realised friday smell was the incense we used ad it smelt a frw days onwards, literally in that room. Another good few days, I was out with my chap on weeekend and whenever I smelt something he did too, so maybe i need to start using that logic.

My room smells musty for some reason, if curtain is open and blowing wind in, I will likely have a whiff of musty smell won't I? See, had a few dayd nothing then musty smell last night, walking to work to do I sniffed the air and faintly smelt something and then someones had some weird aftershave or smell on them.

Must. Fight.

I also have those freaky phantom smells. Mine is smoke. Even makes my eyes water.
I made the mistake of googling too and yes I also thought I had a brain tumour.
Its very alarming to smell something so strong that nobody else can smell. But its not brain cancer. Its anxiety.

Pretty sure she wouldn't actually be reasured by whoever tells her there is nothing wrong, even a highly qualified dr.... Even if she had a scan (which she doesn't need and would be a giant waste of money and resources) then she would think the dr was wrong even if she saw the evidence herself.... it would still be excuses that maybe the scan is wrong... maybe they have the wrong persons scans.

Helen. I am 38 weeks pregnant and let me tell you this, you sniff some weird stuff pregnant and your smell is heightened which you have already been told a number of times but being pregnant I can confirm this is true, infact my mum found out she was pregnant because she smelt onions in a place where onions weren’t about she took a test and was pregnant no tumour!

I’d advise you to speak to your midwife about your health anxiety during pregnancy as you’re going to have a lot of weird symptoms and a lot of worries regarding them because pregnancy changes your whole body, hormones etc, there is only so many times the admins and other people can reply telling you not to worry and it’s fine.

It’s your choice if you want to spend your whole pregnancy worrying or actually be grateful you are pregnant and enjoy it, the baby is a growing human and doesn’t need his/her mummy stressing about nothing.

thank you, I have days where i am so logical and conclude it is real/heightened but then am triggered and spiral again. its smokey smells that trigger me, like my geating or clothes ive bought from my sisters (she smokes, never noticed it when I lived there) or from heating. ok, I know this is a weird thought, but I kept smelling bleach a while back. I was seriously worried what the problem was. I couldn't figure it out. Then one day I sneezed and out came a glob of grossness in my nose and it went away. So basically the "booger" in my nose had taken on the smell when I was cleaning of bleach and I was smelling the bleach in that. It was pretty far up, so I didn't notice it. I felt so ridiculous, because I was starting to worry something was up too. Irrigate your nose and see what happens.

Now i tell self it's likely real smells as they pass as we drive past. One point I got off and very faintly smelt it in air.

I notice if I squash my nose which I do all since this worry I get a sensation of a smell but not actually there. Ks this.me messing with my nose?

Helen, a genuine question...have you ever had a talk to a midwife about this issue? People here have been pointing out that when pregnant your sense of smell is heightened, but you never mention talking to a midwife about this.

I know its been an issue for a long time. ..that's down to your ocd I guess, but the midwives are really good at words of wisdom and comfort during pregnancy. Why not just hand over all of your worries to them? You'll never get another opportunity to be taken seriously by the medical profession as much as when you're pregnant believe me.

How far along are you now? Have you had a scan yet?

24-02-18, 21:25
If you tell the midwives at the hospital at any one of your many appointments that you have a history of anxiety or any sort of mental health issues, they will offer to refer you to their perinatal mental health team. They can advise you and refer you for any treatment throughout your pregnancy. Why not do this? But don't just tell them about/hide behind this latest phantom smell fear, so that they tell you about heightened sense of smell during pregnancy. This is not a physical issue Helen. Tell them that this is the latest in years and years of obsessive HA issues that have dramatically impacted on your life and relationships.

Catherine S
24-02-18, 21:27
But its not a given that they'll send you for an mri. ..that's just you jumping to conclusions. Look, your doctors and the midwives will have read your history...mental health-wise or otherwise, and if there was a any doubt whatsoever that these smells, phanthom or real, were a direct result of a brain tumour they'd have sent you for tests a long time ago.

But as has been suggested, an ENT specialist would be able to discuss all things nasal with you...sinuses can do very strange things to our sense of smell too remember. You have to start sorting it out somewhere, so why not start there.

why is it when we're ready to slay the Dragon does out anxiery seem stronger. Today, after a big chat with my other half tonight, I smelt bacony heating smell on the train. I walked off, didn't smell, walked back and smelt it in same place so that insinuates real smell, right?

my boyfriend wasn't there so I couldn't seek reassurance and I'm not that bad to ask strangers, though I have been seriously tempted. Someone could've been eating bacon crisps or as established in past train heating now smells this way to me.

I so desperately want to beat this but niggle in my head still worries it's something morbid, though bother half had said he has smelt same things Ij have, it's the times he's not there and when he does say he smells them too I don't believe him.

---------- Post added at 13:26 ---------- Previous post was at 12:43 ----------

had to get off bus three times the other day to confirm bonfire smell was real (it was) at three different parts of journey. Nobody else seemed phased by the smell so why am I? Nobody else sniffs about like a bloodhound. Today on train walking down the aisle to see if it followed me, it didn't, I had to pretend I was looking for something as I was getting weird looks. But I did this three times! The smell was jusy around where I was sat but faded further away I got.

I'm still not convinced they are real smells, ugh

Hi Helen, I've read the thread from start to finish and on a number of occasions you've solved your concerns with logic. For example, the incidents on the train, where you noticed a smell in an area, which faded as you walked away tells you it's a real smell. A real smell, that other people could smell too, but probably acknowledged for a split second and moved on. It's likely, they do not have Health Anxiety issues, like you, me and other people on this forum.

A lot of people have given you some really good, sound advice, but you don't seem to want to take it on board. You're pregnant (congratulations :yahoo:), so you've got an exciting time ahead. You're going to have physical and mental ups and downs, because you're body and mind will be working double time as your little one grows. You owe it to yourself and your baby, to find peace of mind with this smell issue, so you can focus on getting ready for the best day of your life.

As advised previously, speak to your midwife about it, and get an appointment with your GP. You can and will get passed this.

Best wishes.

Exactly, so speak to your GP and see what options there are in the way of helping you.

The fact I walked away and resmelt in same area, even faintly, means real smell right?
