How long do flu symptoms last?

My 7 year old had a bad bought of the flu last week and is finally back to school. He is left with a terrible hacking cough. I was with him all that time, and i had a terrible sore throat, sneezing, and a stuffy nose. I didn't have a chance to sleep a lot since i had to take care of my little one (and my husband who broke his foot during that time). I am finally back to work today. I feel soooo tired. Is this normal with the flu? How long will the exhaustion last? My cough is going away ,i'm just feeling drained. It probably doesn't help that my new meds cause drowsiness and that i was awoken at 4 AM by my son hacking!
