Why is this the case for me? If I discover some brand new technique, it turns out its effects don't last.

By coping you are engaging in compulsive behavior. You do anything in order to make the uncertainty go away. Paradoxically when you are willing to accept and experience the uncertainty, your brain learns it's nothing to be afraid of. Go for the compulsions, not the obsessions. Anything you do in order to cope, check or control = compulsive behavior.

Yes, it depends if the technique is trying to push away or mitigate.

There are healthy coping mechanisms though and we apply them through our therapy. Distraction being one useful one but it can also be a double edged sword as you need to learn to tolerate without pushing away and distraction can end up acting as a way to escape.
