Magnesium sulphate works a treat for these - you can buy it in the chemist. A lot of pharmacists will also make you up a poultice which are also great. If it gets a lot worse or you’re immunosuppressed for any reason - diabetes etc it might need antibiotics but most paronychias are fungal & settle without.

Thanks for your help. What's a poultice?

Thanks

I never knew what it was called! I've had plenty of these over the years.

Bathe it in warm salt water in a cup. I did some gardening and cut myself down the nail without realising it and had one of these. Within 2 says my thumb was twice the size and it wasn't painless! It was throbbing when I tried to sleep.

Bathing it in warm salt water for a couple of days managed to loosen the skin enough for me to burst it, which is often what a GP would do anyway just with a needle. I had a load of pus in mine. Once it burst the pain rapidly disappeared and the pins & needles started going. I kept bathing it and managed to squeeze a bit more out a couple of times after and then it just healed up.

It was a relief when it burst. Just think Lister's head in Red Dwarf when he had space mumps* :yesyes:

* No, space mumps isn't real, it was a sci-fy comedy.

Isn't it like a mixture of stuff made into a thick paste than you spread over? An old type of treatment pre-dating witch dunking! http://yoursmiles.org/hsmile/mystic/h0538.gif (http://yoursmiles.org/h-mystic.php):D

Cheers Terry, Yeah i've had a few over the years that have just come and gone. This one is sticking about tho. I've been bathing it in hot water with peroxide in. I've been squeezing it for the last few day's and had a little puss out from the side of my nail. It's not something i would visit a Dr for. If it's the same in a few days i will cut it.

Good luck Sir Lance-It-A-Lot!

Nothing beats the relief of getting pus out! Make sure your needle is sterile though.

I won't be offering the suck the poison out for you mate :roflmao:

Thanks Pulisa. The home lancing is being delayed. I'm managing to squeeze a liitle puss from between my nail and skin. Still got a fat finger tho:doh:

:roflmao:

Sometimes some of the pus is isolated so only a bit comes out and the larger pocket still needs to burst. Playing with the angle and pressing further back can sort the pressure out. Seemed to help with mine.

Well i think i'm going to have to admit defeat and go and see my ar#e wipe of a GP:shrug: It's not getting any better with home treatments, it hurts, it's red and it's fat:doh:

Carys
16-04-18, 17:18
Well, you've given it a good shot, and if its getting worse....then yeah see your crummy GP. I get these fairly often (thought they were called hang nail?), like a couple a year, thats that not that often I guess lol Last one a few months ago looked like your picture, and I soaked in in hot water regularly, wrapped it in savlon soaked NON breathable dressings and did this for a few days. Luckily it resolved, but yours doesn't seem to be heading that way. It flippin hurts doesn't it !

Hopefully it should be within his grasp, it's probably just a prescription for antibiotics. Or drain it.

Could you not see a pharmacist first? They tell us to do this now and let them decide if a GP is needed. I wonder if there is anything they can suggest?

BikerMatt
16-04-18, 17:39
Hi Terry, Yes it hurts:doh: Will probably go to the pharmacist first.

Looking back i've had plenty of these that have resolved within a few days. This has gone on for 6 weeks now and looking back it got worse after i stuck my hand in my fish tank to clean it, plenty of germs and filth in there!

Thanks Terry, i've tried hot water and peroxide, hot water and salt but it's not working:weep:

16-04-18, 17:41
Hey BM, as I said earlier that is a really long time...who knows what bacteria you got in there from the fish tank !!!! Mine resolve in days too and this is way too long.....you GP might have to amputate your hand...hes probably getting his little saw dipped in iodine as we speak. I honestly think you should get antibiotics after 6 weeks ! Can we get another picture ? tee hee

Yeah, the fish tank won't have helped. I got mine through a cut then doing some gardening without gloves to cover it.

6 weeks is rough though! I wouldn't have liked having my thumb for that long, it couldn't pick anything up with that hand.

Where's one of those scarab beetles of The Mummy when you need one?!

What with a rusty hacksaw? That would be a relief to be honest, i was thinking maybe my finger was developing an ar#e tumour:shrug:

Yeah... taking a poo. Don't Worry... BigBoy did it too :D Just find it humorous is all...

BTW BMatt... I had a few of those now and again and one got infected. I was able to squeeze out the goop, apply some anti-bacterial and it healed just fine. They can be uncomfortable though!

Typically used in medical settings and records but most people use more "colorful" descriptions :winks:
I guess it's like the Brit term "taking the piss". It's a different here.
