I hate to have to do this, given the plethora of information on stomach pains/problems and how widely it manifests itself with anxiety, but I wanted to explain my situation, as it seems different to anyone else's account I've read in this section.

For as long as I can remember, I've had issues with hemorrhoids and bloating/stomach cramps, particularly after eating late at night or a night of drinking (it's almost never mattered how much I drink - sometimes even a pint could set off stomach problems the next day).

This seems largely to have settled over the past couple of years, as I'm not keen on drinking so much these days and I tend not to eat that late either.

Anyway, eventually I got the hemorrhoids checked out, as I suddenly got it into my head that something serious was going on. I went to the doctor, pushed for tests and eventually had a sigmoidoscopy done. The specialist said everything was fine - he did find a small polyp, but it was hyperplastic, so it didn't need to be removed.

Now, since about Christmas/New Year time, I've had some bowel issues. I usually go once a day, but this has occasionally increased to twice a day, along with (sorry if this is TMI), some rather flat, ribbon-like stool right at the end of a bowel movement (the initial bit is normal and well-formed).

This has been ongoing for a while, on and off, and there's probably around 3 days a week where I strain some ribbon stool or little bits right at the end of a movement.

Fast forward to now though, and over the past couple of weeks I've begun getting stomach pains, around my abdomen. They come and go, and I wouldn't describe them as piercing pains, but definitely noticeable and it does cause me some discomfort. Over the past 4/5 days it hasn't troubled me that much during the day, but seems to be the sort of thing I'm waking up with in the middle of the night. But again, it's not excruciating, and sometimes I will wake up without pain, but then start feeling discomfort a minute or so later.

All the testimonies of stomach problems/IBS that I've read say that it shouldn't disturb you at night and is usually felt straight after eating. I don't seem to have any problems after food and the pain/discomfort comes on in the middle of the night.

Does this sound like it could be something serious? I don't know what to think at the moment - trying to rationalise it as anxiety, but the pattern doesn't seem to make sense.
