View Full Version : Pupil size - I can’t take it anymore :(

On Friday morning I went to see a cardiologist regarding chest pains, if any of you have seen my other threads you’ll know what the symptoms were. He basically said it seems like nothing is wrong but to put your mind at rest I should get an echo and 24 hour heart monitor. I came out feeling GREAT and pretty much ready to put all that behind me.

BUT NO!

That evening I’m getting ready for bed and notice my left pupil is noticeably bigger than the right. I freak out and Google, and now I’m worrying myself stupid again.

Why can’t I just have a normal life?! I’m struggling to take this anymore.

It’s been like it all weekend, but to a lesser degree. Woke up this month morning and it’s just as bad as it was on Friday :(

Has anyone else experienced this???

Hiyer Sam,

Is the pupil considerably larger ? Is it changing with the light and responding to brightness? Do you have any other symptoms?

There are conditions that can cause pupil size differences, a doctor visit or opthamologist can have a quick look for you and very quickly establish if there is a medical reason for the pupil unequalness.

However, here is a recent thread where we talked about benign aniscoria....which might relate to you ?

If you close one eye one pupil will be bigger than the other. There are so many reasons this could happen.

Reaching for google will always lead to a self diagnosis of imminent doom. Step away from google, get on with your life. It's a choice that everybody here must make at some point.

I was freaking out so went to an opticians this morning and had an eye test, the inside of my eye looks fine and the nerves are all working correctly. The optician said he's not worried about it.

My pupil is reacting normally to light. :)

Thanks for the support.

I woke up this morning and it was super noticeable, weirdly the right pupil was larger this morning but I have a weird feeling in my left eye. I’ve called the doctors and got an emergency appointment at 10.20. I shall let you know what the Dr says.

Didn't the optician say it was ok?
What did Dr say?

The doctor said there is inflammation there, and has recommend I go to the nearby walk in eye hospital. So I’m here now waiting to be seen. I’ll update soon.

So the doctor at the eye hospital said she can't see a reason for why the pupils don't match in size, although they were equal when I was there with her... typical! She did say I have really dry eyes and prescribed some eye drops.

Other than that she said to come back if I get blurry vision or see flashing lights.

What a run around LOL So, basically, the eye hospital see nothing, the GP says they see something and .....now you don't know what to think. I'd go with the specialist - if they saw nothing to worry about, and the pupil was matching with reaction times and so on then thats good. So, ummm, have you started any new medication or anything recently?

Well my feelings now are that I've done all I can, I was sensible to get an eye test and go to my GP and I went to the eye hospital as instructed by GP. I've done all I can do and everyone has said they can't see anything wrong... so I've got to get on with life and ignore it and hope over time it goes away.

In February I started taking Escitalopram for anxiety. :)

I've seen information that aniscoria can be caused by a few antidepressants in a few people, don't know how rare it is. Mind, if the pupils were normal at the opthamologist.....then maybe not even that....

I think you are just fine :yesyes:

I had a headache today :( I'm really worried that this is something serious. Would an eye doctor be able to tell if it was related to something neurological?

Yes. You were referred and given a diagnosis of dry eyes.

The eye doctor didn’t say the uneven pupils are because of dry eyes, that was just a secondary finding.

I am worried, I have a pain in my right eye today and a slight headache and minor lightheaded feeling. I don’t know what else to do at this point. I’ve booked an appointment with my regular GP but it’s not until next Thursday.

Bingo. According to some medical journal reports, apparently that can be a side effect. You're seeing your doctor next week so make sure to ask about it.

That's what I said earlier in the thread, pupil dilation is a side-effect of the meds for some people.

I’ve been taking the meds since February so I can’t help but think it’s somethig sinister.

How do I persuade myself it’s not given the fact I’ve also had headaches and slight dizziness?

From Feb. 23rd:

Thanks all. Health anxiety is the worst :( I've just started therapy so I hope that helps.

What does your therapist have to say about this? And what does he/she think about you posting on an anxiety forum for reassurance?

Just as I was making peace with the fact my eyes are different sizes, I've not got a constant tingling in my left hand... connecting the dots and worrying about MS. It's been there for 48 hours and is pretty intense. :(
