I did not need to read that there is another outbreak of Ebola again in Africa... or that Bill Gates said that's he's usually an optimist but believes we're on the edge of some pandemic catastrophe where 30 million people will be killed within 6 months. Why did I check the news???? I've had so much real stuff going on the last couple of weeks (health stuff with my child) and am finally in a moment of reprieve... why did I find another source to stress out about? Come on, self. Be better than this. Ebola is so scary because it's so deadly, and we live in such an interconnected world... my mind takes hold, and off I go into terror-ville.

If that's what Gates has said, he must be trying to frighten people. There have been many outbreaks of Ebola over decades and only recently have we heard of them...because of the media. He is always campaigning for more foreign investment into poor countries so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a tactic on his part.

WHO will be all over it like they always are. We had all the scary reporting last time, including some returning infected medical professionals, yet nothing happened in our countries.

There is supposed to be a vaccine against ebola now, though which countries it is allowed to be used in is debatable. In an interconnected world we cannot allow disease to flourish in far off places thinking we are immune. Drugs companies go for where they will make most money. Obviously not much to be made in Africa, but isn't there an argument for state intervention on humanitarian grounds? Sadly, I know this goes against many capitalist principles.

Good points, Terry.

If it's any consolation, I read that 12 specialists are already on the ground to address the current outbreak, and that they are replicating the procedures used in the last outbreak which proved relatively successful...I think they learned a great deal from these last few incidents.

They could put the money into prevention instead. Prevent the poor conditions that allow this to happen in the first place. Perhaps that would reduce other disease at the same time.

Get more countries to put in foreign aid.

ebola again? im guessing the gold miners went on strike again. Bill Gates saying a catastrophe? Its almost like he "knows". Kinda like how science predicts the rates of alzheimers will double by 2050, yet, they claim they don't even know why it happens in the first place. Balony. We can create mars rovers, robots, technology....but cant cure disease. Riiiiiight.

I thought Bill Gates was something to do with computers not world health type stuff :roflmao:

He's actually pretty massively into world health stuff. He hasn't worked on computers in over a decade and instead runs a massive foundation active on malaria, clean water, and global disease eradication.

Whether his predication is correct at all is another question. But health is pretty much his area now.
