Aww thanks Andrea, Nikk and Lorraine

We have just got back from the vets. :weep:

I noticed Walnut wasn't well earlier this evening and called the emergency vet who said we could take her in if she got any worse.

She wasn't breathing properly and was opening her mouth to breathe which we guessed wasn't normal for a cat!

It is an out-of-hours emergency service so we had a 45 minute drive over there and expected for them to say she was ok and would be fine.

Turns out she has fluid on her lungs and has a heart arrythmia and is really not very well.

They have taken her in to get her on oxygen for the night so they can calm her breathing down so she can have more tests tomorrow under sedation.

He said that if it was a heart condition then it could be weeks, months or at most 2 years before she died or it could be pneumonia.

The next 12-24 hours are critical for her so we have to trust that they will do all they can.

I really don't need this at the moment - it seems to be one thing on top of another and I am mega stressed and feeling rubbish. :weep:

I will let you know what happens.

Thanks all.

We have just got back from picking Walnut up and she is now at our usual vet.

She seems much better in herself but they do need to check out her heart so she is staying in for the afternoon so they can do blood tests, urine, ECG, x-rays, scans etc.

Will know more later today.

Thanks for all the hugs - I feel a bit better today though I have had to take the day off work to sort things out and am so tired that I am off back to bed for a while now.

Will update later.

Ok we are back home again now with Walnut :)

She has Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which is basically a disease of the heart muscle that causes excessive thickness of the heart muscle and a reduced heart chamber size

She has been heavily sedated this afternoon for all the test so can't stand or walk at the moment and keeps falling over so is not a very happy puss.

She will basically have to be on heart tablets (beta-blockers would you believe) for the rest of her life. This will be fun trying to give her those 3 times a day every day :lac:

She has to go back Friday for a check-up but for now is back home safe with us.:yesyes:

Fortunately we have pet insurance as the cost for last night was £160 and we just paid another £600 for the tests today.

The drugs are approximately £320 a year !!

I need to work out how much we can claim from the pet insurance but thank goodness we had it.

My advice to anyone with a pet is get insurance !! Walnut costs us £10 a month as she is a pedigree whereas Treacle is only £5. That cost per year is nothing compared to the cost over the last day and the ongoing treatment costs.

Thanks for all the hugs - Walnut appreciates them too cos she is feeling very sorry for herself at the moment

Nic, so glad Walnut is home. I can't imagine giving a cat a pill as I have a hard enough time giving our dog a heartworm pill every month! I'm so glad she will be okay though with the meds. I never considered pet insurance but I'm checking into it, thanks for the advice. Hope this helps take some of the load off your shoulders.

Thanks

She is currently hiding in the dark so maybe a bit stressed and we have given her the first beta-blocker - maybe she doesn't like them!

It is a long road ahead but one we have to go down and we love her so much as we don't have kids so we can do it.

Thanks for all the replies - it means a lot as some people say "it is just a cat" but to us she is more than that!

Hi Nic and Alex

Sorry that Walnut isn't too well. She looks like a British Blue from the photo.

When our poor puss was ill we gave him tablets disguised in Shipphams Beef Paste which worked well. Just a tip incase cheese spread doesn't work!

Let us know how Walnut gets on.

Best Wishes

Yes she is a shorthaired British Blue and from champion breeding stock!

I guess it can happen to any cat.

My only worry is that the vet said it could be genetic and we lost her son in April this year from heart attack and we still have her daughter so hope she is ok!

Hi, first time here for a few days, so sending my best wishes, my dog is on steroids for life, he is only 6 and I crush his and hide in cat food, maybe you could do same in dog food? Ha, I have pet insurance, and am so glad , as you say its very expensive, last year he cost over £2,000, the only problem is because its a lifelong problem now, he isnt covered anymore, but they are worth it, they are not just a cat, or just a dog, they are a member of the family, I also have a cat, and am considering another one after my holidays, they are a pleasure and wonderful company.
Anyway, sorry, rabbiting on now, hope Walnut goes from strength to strength now shes home, catch up soon, xxx

I'm so glad Precious Walnut is back home with his loving family.

So sorry to hear about his heart condition poor little mite. How old is he?

Walnut looks so beautiful in the picture it remind me of our little British Blue Boy Sparky who as you know died of cancer last year. That cost £3000 in treatment! Luckily like you we were insured tis so important to have Pet Insurance I think.

Our Snoops cat has to have a steriod every day as she is slightly asmatic I buy the wafer thin chicken and wrap the tablet up in a little bit of that. That seems to work. Has to be the wafer thin meat as the other sliced meats are to thick and you can't wrap the tablet up in it very well. Good Luck though and I hope he manages to take the tablets ok hun.

She is fine tonight - we managed tablets this morning and this evening - one more to go before bedtime. The cheese spread is working a treat so far.

She can walk straight now and seems bright enough.

I try not to think how long she will live - just take each day as it comes and love both her and Treacle each day.

At least she is at home with us and safe:D

Alexis - we only get the bill paid for the first year to a maximum of £2500 but it is better than nothing isn't it?

Glad things are going well - Cheese spread!

When I was a young girl (millenia ago!) we had a goreous fluffy tabby called Tinker - and he just loved cheddar cheese!

Nic, it's a real shame that it's not a cure but I hope the treatment can help Walnut have a reasonable quality of life for some time. We would all hope that there could be a permanent cure for you but you are doing all you can to help manage her condition and keep her as well as is possible.

It's hard when much loved pets are ill because they are as much a part of the family as children would be. I hope she has a lot of quality life ahead. You will know you have done the best by her and that's the main thing.

Walnut will know she is well loved. It's not easy Nic. All I can do is send a few more hugs for you all :hugs: :bighug: :bighug1:

Had a bit of a cry tonight cos she came and sat on the arm of the chair and kept padding me with her paw as though to say that she knew what was going on and she loved me - sounds so soppy now I say it lol.

She is fine though and has had a fab life whatever happens and we know we have done all we could.

Will see what vet says on Friday about whether her heart rate is down or not.

You probably remember how very upset and heartbroken I was when I had to move and couldn't find anyway that accepted pets and it broke my heart to rehome them. I still think about my cats every day and I just hope they are safe and well loved.

Thanks Kaz and Karen

It is the simple things I worry about now like when we go away we have a neighbours daughter look after them. It seems like a burden to ask her to give Walnut her meds 3 times a day!

We need to ask the vet if she can miss doses if Lucy can't get them down her - she may not want the responsibility but we need a holiday and don't want them in a cattery.

Oh gosh this is harder than I ever imagined!

Southern_Belle
26-07-07, 00:03
Nic,

I'm sure that the person taking care of your Walnut won't mind. It doesn't hurt to ask. My poor dog Brandi didn't eat for 4 days in a row when we left on vacation and we hired a caregiver to live in the house with her who knew her  . She was so depressed. She has lost so much weight, I'm just sick over it.

Animals become as attached to us as we are to them and you have nothing to be ashamed of in regards to the emotions of love you feel for Walnut. Any time you feel love it is a good thing in my opinion.

:hugs: ,

Hi Nicola - so sorry to hear what your going through with Walnut at the moment - pets do like to put us through it (one of my dogs has just been diagnosed with a type of oral cancer, so finding it all a bit traumatic here too)

Just a thought about going away - if your neighbour isn't happy about giving pills or you would prefer not to ask - why not ask if one of the vet nurses would do it - i have heard before that sometimes they are willing to pop in to do such things if you are away.

Hope Walnut gets on ok at the vets on Friday.

A few have asked how we are doing so the update is...

Walnut is still on beta-blockers with the aid of chicken lol - only way we can get her to take them is hidden in chicken bits.

She had another scan and the heart is functioning better so although she will still die she has a better quality of life whilst we have her.

We just take each day as it comes and fuss her loads. She is doing ok though so thanks for asking :hugs:
