Hi All,

I suffer from bad health anxiety. For the last three weeks I have had a sore throat on and off and today it has developed into tonsillitis. I read online that sometimes re-occurring sore throats and be related to hiv. I have been with the same partner for 10 years and have two children. The reason I am anxious is because of a visit to the dentist 5 years ago. My wisdom tooth was removed. It went well but I noticed that I got a cold and sore throat about three weeks later. It’s been in the back of my mind since. I have had had several hiv tests probably but none since the visit to the dentist. I had children since then and my wife and kids are negative cause they test when pregnant. Can you advise me if I should do another test or am I being health anxious?

Based on your post, I can't see how this would even be on the radar

Can it not be transmitted through dental equipment?

They boil the equipment in water so no it can't.

Doesn’t sound like HIV at all. I work for a low income doctors office and we get a lot of hiv patients and I typically don’t see them with throat issues. It’s usually more of UTIs, skin infections , etc.
you don’t have HIV based on what you have said.
No you can’t get it from dental equipment.

Hello All,

I need some advice please and would be really appreciative from any input you can all offer. I recently had a HIV test and I wasn’t paying attention if a new needle was used. I did see them throw away the needle they used with me into the yellow hazard bucket. This was two weeks ago, over the past couple of days I have had flu like symptoms, runny nose sore throat and temperature. I got worried about ARS symptoms and thought what if i was exposed when they used a used needle because I was not paying attention. I am based in the Uk and did the test at a private clinic that specialise in STI tests. I am just anxious about it. Anyone able to offer advice here please?

I know you're implying you got infected by a sterilized sealed needle used to take a test but that's impossible. So what advice do you need?

I didn’t see if it was a new needle. Also because I have the symptoms now a few weeks later I am panicked that I may have been infected. Am I being irrational?

It is nothing personal it is just to make it easier for people to follow your story and to give you advice as a whole.

Ok... you're right. All testing facilities use brand new sealed equipment for drawing blood but someone in the medical field at this particular facility had a vendetta against you, went totally bonkers, opened a sterilized needle, found someone with HIV, stuck them with the needle and saved it just for you...

Does that sound realistic? :lac:

All equipment that is used again is autoclaved to a high temp so is 100% safe no if's or but's Single use needles are exactly what it says used once and then put in a sharps box. May I respectfully say you get help for your Health Anxiety this is what's driving your fears. ATB

How about forgetting about the new needle and considering HIV itself? It's so fragile it can't live outside of a body to incubate it. Therefore in the time it took another patient to walk out of that room, who may not even have HIV anyway, and you to walk in and take the test it would die anyway.

That very reason is why the old myths of toilet seats and touching objects handled by those with HIV were busted many years ago.

Not that I doubt the needle was new and the safety protocols employed by a testing service.

Yes, it's completely irrational. You don't have HIV in any possible way whatsoever. People have responded, and you still ask for advice.

Get help for your HA. That's what you need, not impossible scenarios that have been made up.

Reassurance isn't going to work from complete strangers.

You need to be reassuring yourself and seeing how irrational your fears are to be honest.

HIV is not contracted that way. Unless you had sex with your dentist before/after tooth removal, there is nothing to worry about.
