View Full Version : Bilirubin on urine strip. Freaking out!
I bought some healthwise urinalysis strips to keep.on hand to test for UTIs. Last week I was having pain in my lower left side so I used one to make sure it wasn't a UTI. Everything came back negative except I had a trace of WBC (my normal) and small amount bilirubin. I didn't panic and waited until last night to do it again, sure enough same result. I well hydrated myself and did it again, same thing. I googled, bad bad bad! Liver disease and bile obstruction came up. I don't drink, I'm 35 years old/female, don't smoke or do drugs so I don't think it's liver disease. I had my gallbladder taken out 8 years ago so its not that, I'm vaccinated against hepititis and I don't do drugs and faithful to my husband so that rules that out. So that leaves bile obstruction. One of those things is pancreatic Cancer. I'm completely beside myself in fear now! I had blood work back in October which was normal along with urine test also normal but that was 9 months ago. Has this happened to anyone else?
PS I didn't take daily vitamin D3 and B12

At home tests of any kind are notoriously unreliable. If you’re really concerned, go to the doctor and and get a lab test done. But between now and then, stay off of Google and don’t diagnose yourself with pancreatic cancer.
Thanks for your reply. I'm just nervous because everything else was normal but this.
I have panicked about this myself. I believe the bilirubin test has a high false positive rate? Ask your doctor to be sure....

Really? It happened to you? Mine shows as the "small" amount. I've tested several times today and I cannot find anything reassuring when I look it up
.
Tested again this morning, positive again. :( I'm panicking.
I had a blood test 3/4 weeks ago and all came back normal apart from my bilirubin which should apparently be below 22 but mine was 32. She said not to worry as she’s seen that come back in the 100’s in some patients. I too have been worried sick since. My GP says it's possibly Gilbert’s Syndrome. I have a re test a week Thursday.

It's so nerve wrecking. :( Praying everything comes back ok for you. Keep me posted.
My bilirubin levels are elevated constantly, and it turned out (when I had multiple checks and a referral to a specialist) that I have Gilbert Syndrome. The specialist (he has researched liver diseases) told me that my metabolism works in a different way than average, and that it's nothing to worry about. Life expectancy is normal.
My levels are fluctuating around 40-80. So before you freak out, please remember that it's probably nothing at all. The levels can fluctuate without an underlying issue as well.
I thought about that but I've never had this show up on blood tests or urine tests before. That's what's confusing. My last check was back in October at a go check up.

I noticed if my urine is diluted the test is pretty close to negative.
Don't panic, just go do the bloodwork.
I've had elevated bilirubin on urine strip, but all blood tests and ultrasound came back normal
And my bilirubin was waaaay off chart, the color was supposed to be white, mine was dark brown, and the leaflet said it means my liver is practically not functioning. I was crying myself to sleep for 2 days, and guess what, my liver is fine :P Those tests are good for nothing it would seem.

That's comforting, thank you!! Mine is just a light tan, but I noticed if I have drank a lot it's pale yellow like it says it should be. My last lab work was in October abd it was normal. I had a CT scan back in 2015 but that was 3 years ago.

Crazy I know but I tested my sons and his was, no doubt, negative.
Maybe it is slightly elevated, there's million reasons for that to happen. If your liver was failing you'd have much more severe symptoms then lightly tanned urine test, that comes and goes depending on how much have you drunk. Don't worry, just do the bilirubin test at the doctor and see how it goes.
I've also made my fiancee do this test so I would feel better, and let me tell you, I definitely didn't, all came back normal, and mine was so dark. I've also had slight change in color for kidney function (and my fiancee didn't), and yet my kidneys are also ok according to the bloodwork and usg.
For people with anxiety those tests do more damage than good. I've had my results and still worry sometimes that they might have give me results of someone else, or that they didn't do the bloodwork properly, or (million other reasons of why I might be dying). Don't end up like me, try to understand how ridiculous your thinking is, that slight change in home test instantly leads your mind to cancer, while there is so many other reasons, one of which is that the test is incorrect, as they often are. And if it isn't that gives you another 99,99% of it being nothing serious. Try not to imagine the worse when there's no reason to.
Thank you for replying
You're right and I completely agree. After I see the Dr I plan to throw them out.
Another positive test today.
What do you actually mean by a positive test? The thing is with these strips, it’s all about interpreting colour changes, which can be subjective, especially if you are anxious.
Don’t test any more - let the doctor do it.
I got into a total pickle with urine testing strips- I’ve thrown them away now!!

At this point you’re just driving yourself crazy. If you’re worried, go to a doctor, get a real test done, then throw the at home stuff away.

The color of my result matches the small amount square on the bottle. The only time I can get it to be negative is if I drank a bunch of water and my urine is practically clear. :( I'm calling my Dr first thing in the morning.

Our cat really knows how to get treats when he wants them and he's persistent too. From his cute little tricks and antics to the stare through your soul look and that persistence, he typically gets what he wants. We certainly spoil him :D
You're doing the same thing with your dragon with none of the benefits. Does your dragon curl up with you and purr after you self check? :winks: You said you would throw the strips out AFTER the doctor? Why not now? When you're testing your kids to compare to yourself, you're going too far.

Very true. I’m ashamed to say I’ve done the same in the past and it is frankly weird and a bit creepy and a sure sign that the dragon is winning.:blush::blush:
Thank you for your replies. I know a lot of this is anxiety but a part of it, isn't. It's something that needs checking out, a nurse friend, I have, agrees. I have an appointment today and I'm a mess waiting for it.
I know you are worried. Good luck and let us know how you get on

I have high bilirubin, I was told I have gilberts syndrome. I didn't find out till I was 24, had plenty blood tests before and it was never mentioned!
Hope everything is okay, I'm sure it Will be
Urine was clear! But while I was there, she looked at my labs I did in January and noticed my platlets were high at 453,000 so she repeated the blood work so waiting for those results. C'mon! :/

Normal platelet count goes up to 450,000....so odds are it’s nothing, just the doctor dotting is and crossing ts.
As far as the urine test, that’s great! I’d probably be tossing the home tests ASAP as well.
Hooray!
Now throw those tests AWAY!!!!
Lol done! I threw the strips away, even took them out to the outside trash so I wouldn't dig them out. ;)
