View Full Version : Odd feeling on Lower right side of my throat

Hi,

I've been a lurker for years. I'm a 33 year old who works out daily. I've been diagnosed with Anxiety, Major Depression, IBS, and Harm OCD. I'm already medicated and thought I was doing well until last April to today that I've had night panic attacks, headaches, chest pains, insomnia, two heart burn episodes due to my anxiety, a bee biting me, then arguments with my family members that finally led up to a shingles outbreak.

On June 6-13 I began to feel muscle aches on the right side of my neck.

On June 14-15 Aches went away and began to notice a small spot on my right shoulder blade with a swollen lymph node. My mom thought that it was a spider bite and treated it with ointments.

On June 16 It began to quickly spread and began having burning stabbing sensations on my right shoulder blade. (Having a friend who suffered from this due to stress, I realized what it was)

June 17 I went to the ER and the Physician confirmed my suspicion and diagnosed me with Shingles. He asked if I had chronic condition and mentioned Anxiety and Depression. Then asked if I was under stress and told him what's been happening personally. Then, said that's it. He prescribid Acyclovir and to see my Dr just to make sure everything is ok or be referred to a dermatologist.

Over that week, it keep spreading around my right clavicle and chest. Began to have problems with swallowing on my lower right side of my neck/throat, next to my clavicle. However, taking Acyclovir lessened my shingles symptoms.

Up to today July 6, I finished my antivirals. I was seen by my Dr. she was impressed that I had only one day of stabbing and burning sensation, which meant I might not have long term problems. Though at the end of the appointment it became a intervention session since I was freaking out about an ache on my neck going up to my ear and my swallowing issues since I think its ALS or throat cancer. Since I've felt somewhat weak, and the shifting pain/ache sensation on my neck/throat.

She checked my lymph nodes, and felt around my neck. She had me look at her eyes, while she told me its going to be ok. It's alright to feel odd or strange things. You're ok. You're swallowing problems come from your anxiety. Not from the shingles or some cancer.

Right now I'm having some weakness on my chest and right hand. When I drink hot water, I don't feel anything. Then, when I drink cold water, I feel something. Though, when I drink cold water later on, nothing. Same thing when I eat. Sometimes, I feel something, then other times nothing.

Sounds horrible to say, I don't trust my doc or my mind is truly playing games with me. I don't see my psych or therapist until next week. I hope someone out there can help me calm down with these symptoms.

Shingles is horrible as an adult, I had it a few years ago and was miserable. Like you I didn’t have any long term pain from it.

Your doctor sounds really kind. It’s a shame you don’t believe her, as I think she probably understands more than you realise.

You’re a long time sufferer, so what do you think you need to do?

My logical mind tells me just go with the flow, and let the symptoms happen and let them go. Seek help from my therapist and psychiatrist.

While my health anxiety ridden mind tells me to go to another dr. Go to specialists. Oh, they're lying. You're dying.

I never thought shingles would bring me back to square one since I thought I had overcome these health anxiety issues a year ago. Though, this shows i haven't. I need more work to be done.

I do understand how you can fall back into it despite thinking you’re doing ok. This happened to me a couple of years ago and I’ve been up and down ever since.

I also completely understand how you feel with regards to trusting your mind.

I don’t have a problem with trusting my doctor, but I have a problem trusting my anxiety! So my rule is that if it bothers me for more than 2 weeks or if it’s affecting my day to day life then I go to my doctor just like anyone else would. In that 2 week wait I pull out all the anxiety tools I’ve got in my arsenal and see if they help, or if I need to try new ones.

So, maybe try that? Throw everything at yourself in terms of dealing with it as if it’s anxiety, and then if it’s still bothering you go back to the doctor, or see a different one.

I've had trust problems since I was a kid.

I've had various symptoms occur to me that faded away more than a year after they cropped out. I had brain zaps, headaches, testicular aches, and she did a battery of tests from blood work to ultrasounds and nothing. It was my anxiety. Before my shingles outbreak i was having palpitations and chest pains. Now, they're gone. Like nothing ever happened. Then, as the shingles symptoms went away I had bladder pain/ibs issues. The bladder pain went away. Now, it's my throat/neck/ear with aches. My doc checked my ears and pressed around my neck and lymph nodes. Nothing. Just wax my ear

What gives me some peace, it's that my neck/throat pain shifts up or down in the right side of my throat. It's not stationary. Also, I'm able to go to sleep. If it was something that was truly wrong with me, I wouldn't be able to sleep. Especially with the ear ache or neck/throat pain.

That's why I know I'm not going to switch to another Dr since she knows my wacky anxiety symptom history. She ordered blood work like always and wants to see me in a month. She's tracked my bloods since 2014 and knows that I'm ok. It's just wacky anxiety at it again.
