Hi

Does anyone lose their vision when having a really bad migraine?

Thanks

I would think majority of people having a migraine do. I sometimes get unilateral zigzag patterns in peripheral vision - with or without a "headache".

Conversely, some experience no vision loss/problem at all - even when having a "bad" migraine.

I get auras without migraines called scintillating scotoma. This link has various different images for what these can look like. I get the Pagoda one:

It takes me 10 minutes to an hour for my vision to return to normal.

Can it go longer? I had an episode the other day that I am hoping was a migraine, as I have had one before with the rainbow zigzag. But this one was longer and the first one was only 15 mins. Also the first one was both eyes and the second was only in one eye.

The longest I've had was an hour, maybe a little more. I have had several occurring in a day close together, but I don't get them more than once or twice every few months. Usually they last 20 minutes. For me they cause visual disturbance and strong disassociation but do not progress to a full migraine. I have a rough idea of how these are triggered sometimes but they feel fairly random at other times.

Mine is sometimes in one eye, sometimes in both but it always completely messes with my vision. Got referred to eye specialist who checked my eyes out and said they are ok.

If yours looks like one of the ones on that Wiki article just show your doctor the image that most matches up.

Yes. These types of migraine can come with or without headache and are called "Migraine with Aura" or "aura migraines".

They affect the field of vision - meaning whichever eye you close, you can still see the visual disturbances / missing parts of vision.

They are horrible and extremely freaky. I have had about 5 so far in my life... they happen just once in a blue moon, but utterly freak me out each time. Especially the ones that come without any form of headache.

Hope this helps
