Hi everyone,

Call me Missy O. I'm 31 years old. I've been suffering from GERD for years now. I'm having all the symptoms of LPR at this point - lump in throat sensation, post nasal drip, noisy breathing, sore throat and hoarseness. I am literally INCONSOLABLE. I have not stopped crying, because I think I have either throat or esophageal cancer. My symptoms appear to be worsening and are no longer responding to the medication I'm on. I'm slowly changing the diet, because I know it's a must at this point. But I'm sad and terrified. There's a part of me that wants to know, but there's another part of me that doesn't even want to know if I'm dying. Please help me out there. I'm in the midst of an emotional breakdown.

Thank you so much and much love to everyone here; I know this is a journey for all of us.

Have you tried using PPIs/changing to a different PPI?

When you say you are changing your diet slowly, what do you generally eat now?

I'm going to the GI to see about switching meds. It will be my first visit to the GI. I'm nervous. I've been eating soups, mashed potatoes, chicken, etc.

Hi all,

I went to the ER today due to a GERD flare up. They didn't keep me; they sent me home, but he did make it clear that I need to follow up with a GI and have an endoscopy done. I'm terrified of what the endoscopy will show. I've been having so many different symptoms, both gastric and in the throat - worst one being that lump in the throat sensation due to the reflux. The doctor reassured me that I have otherwise good health and youth on my side, and he doesn't think it's cancer or anything equally serious or severe. But I'm terrified of what the endoscopy will show. Has anyone had an endoscopy before? I need some reassurance desperately. Thank you for listening. :)

Yes, I've had a couple of endoscopies over the years. I prefer to have the sedation which is light, but you don't remember the procedure. The scope can see down the oesophagus, into the stomach and the beginning of the small intestine. It's a simple procedure.

If you go privately, the specialist usually tells you the findings before you leave.

Like you say, you are in good health and are young. You are having a GERD flare-up, the lump in the throat sensation is very common, but good to get this checked up. It will just be routine I'm sure :)

Did you ever have a sore throat, noisy breathing & hoarseness?

I am a 31 one year old woman with a major GERD exacerbation, exhibiting throat symptoms now too (lump in the throat sensation, soreness, tightness in my neck, hoarseness, etc). I have been convinced that I have esophageal cancer or throat cancer, because I've had GERD for years and don't exactly watch what I eat (though I don't do drugs, smoke or drink).

Anyway, my anxiety has been through the roof. I have been a mess emotionally. But I was looking through this page to see if I could find anyone that relates to my current symptoms. And I came across something a senior member, SLA, said. And it helped ease some of my anxiety. I hope it helps you too. Here it is:

... that's because your brain has formed this belief that it is cancer. And when you have a belief like that it looks for evidence to back it up.

So the more you read, the more you reinforce the belief. It's called priming.

You prime your brain to find evidence you have cancer, and it finds it.

Does anyone with GERD or IBS ever get extreme bloating where it lasts for days?

So no information on that then?
