Doing a barium swallow at 10 tomorrow and I’m super nervous/scared. Never had one before or any major testing aside from some x rays and blood testing.

Any advice/tips to calm my overactive nerves? My mind is like running through a millions things that can possible things that can go wrong.

Just a little information about myself, I’m testing for possible GERD, though I don’t have the typical symptoms (heart burn/regurgitation) just like one or two cough after meals. I’m. 20 years old and not overweight, never smoked or drink.
Also anyone know how long does the results usually take?

I had one done a few months ago and it was fine, they actually made it a lot of fun. The various drinks were ok and not unpleasant. I had mine done privately so the specialist spoke to me during and after the procedure.

I have some mild motility issues which tend to flare up at various time as I have autoimmune conditions.

Thanks for the reply, I just had the test done. It wasn’t so bad other than the drinking part. The doctor and staff were really nice. The doctor right afterwards told me that I didn’t have a reflux problem. :)

I didn’t choke but I did like gag twice but because of the crystals it kinda turn into a burp. Good thing I didn’t throw up :roflmao:

This may be a bit weird/disgusting but I was wondering if you could help me with this. I was told that my bowel moments would be white as the barium pass through my system. So far I had bowel moments today and yesterday but weren’t white, today’s lighter but still not white. Is it normal not to have white bowel movements, any chance that the barium will stay in you system?

Hi sorry for making another post about this but there was no responding in the other thread since it wasn’t really active and I have one more question about this procedure.
Just a warning this may get a bit digusting and weird.... (just a warning)
I had a barium swallow last Thursday to test for Gerd (which I don’t have).
After the procedure doctor told me that my stool will be white for the next few days and to drink plenty of water.
So far I had a bowel movement each day, I think the stool is a bit lighter than usual but it’s also mostly little ball/pebble shaped but I have no trouble actual passing bowel movement.
Is there a chance that the barium can get stuck in my body (since it’s not white)? Am I constipated from the barium (ball shaped stool), if so do I have to go get a laxative or will the constipation pass on it’s own.

Never had this procedure done before or remember being constipated, so super nervous.
At the most I only had X-rays done in my life.
Please and thanks to everyone!

No mine weren't white, I was advised to drink lots of water and take more fibre, as the barium is heavy and can stick to your intestines. I knew what I was getting rid of when I went to the toilet...it was bombs away (like heavy stones) :roflmao:

I was told it can stay in your system about 1 week :)
