View Full Version : Throat/Tongue symptoms caused by anxiety?

I had a mucocele on my inner lip which has recently been removed. This was in June and during this time I worried it was cancer even though doctors informed me otherwise. I then looked in the back of my throat and noticed red blotches. This led me to google about throat cancer and am now convinced I have it. I began looking in my throat constantly and around my mouth. I then began having symptoms such as dry mouth, burning feeling, dry base of tongue feeling like something was there. I also feel like something is growing in my throat and have difficulty swallowing occasionally. This has been going on for a month or more with no relief. I’ve been to ENT for follow up on mucocele surgery and he checked it out. He informed me my throat looks cobblestones and says it might be allergies (which I’ve never had) or acid reflux. I have since recently noticed my tongue was yellowish.

Anyone else have these issues?

He didn't look all the way down my throat though. What if he missed something? Should I get a second opinion?

What can you learn from the above statement?

Have you tried taking something for reflux rather than assuming you have cancer? Tried treating the anxiety maybe?
An ENT said you don’t have throat cancer, there’s your answer.

Why would the symptoms last this long if it wasn't something more serious? I've tried everything to not think about it but it keeps returning.

The ENT wanted me to have testing before medicating. He tested me for allergies but I wasn't able to do the 24 hour PH probe test. Have a follow up with him tomorrow and will ask about reflux medication. I don't feel like I have reflux though that's why I have doubts. I don't smoke or drink but still concerned it could be HPV caused.

The allergy test came back positive for just dust. Which I've never had issues with dust and that doesn't make sense that this would start randomly since my mucocele.

I'm a Head and Neck Cancer survivor.

Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. It doesn't come and go nor does it stop once it starts.

Anyway... this is similar to the thousands of other throat cancer posts and not one in the time I've been on the boards has been anything sinister. You won't be the first I assure you!

If you’re going to google, I’d recommend looking up the schooling/training requirements (residency, etc) of ENTs compared to other physicians. They are extremely highly trained and specialized. They know what cancer looks like.

By come and go I mean at some points during the day it feels better then other times it feels dry and troublesome again.

Not sure what's causing me not to trust the ENT. I think it's because of the symptoms I'm having. He also seemed really laid back like nothing was wrong.

Oh my, fishmanpa must be getting crazy with all these posts :)
I just had eval form top oral cancer surgeon. I had similar symptoms, growth in base of throat, irritation of the area, dry throat, and above all, lots of panic attacks about these, etc. None of these are apparently cancer symptoms.

HPV+ cancer apparently presents with cystic mass on the neck. Even when it is only 2mm tumor growth, it already spreads down to the neck fast. In addition, there might be a hard knuckle growth on the lingual tonsil area. Like you can't feel or see the growth, but if you palpate the area, there will be a hard rock acorn in there. And last, sometimes, it can cause one sided ear pain..but that can be caused by many other things.

Basically, I have enlarged lingual tonsils due to acid reflex. Didn't believe the first 2 highly trained ENTs who told me that...but when I got to the Head of oral surgery in UCLA...and he said the same...well, its hard to worry anymore. I still feel all of the symptoms that you feel. Take nexium for 3 months. Its chronic condition though...so it might never go away.

Amoment ofClarity...don't be so judgmental. HA sucks...and its not possible to control. Mean comments don't help.

I had two Oral surgeons tell me I don't have cancer, yet had several panic attacks. The internet tells you this cancer is very hard to diagnose. So I get it...
It really sucks to have something in your mouth...you can't forget, even if your doc says "its just acid reflux". It is "something"...just not cancer.

What are throat symptoms caused by anxiety. Also, It bothers me most throughout the day and seems to be not so bad at night.

Yes, I know it is horrible, very very nasty...because you have something and it feels like what else can it be. It is very bizarre but actual HPV cancer...you DON'T HAVE THE FEELING that you have something.
I stopped my anxiety by going to a top oncologist. No trips to my VERY well trained ENTs helped. My ENT #1 scoped me 3 times. he said there is no way this is cancer.

I felt ok for 24 hours, then panic set in again.
Then second opinion ENT...sits on the tumor board of large hospital. still didn't reassure me. Within 48 hrs, I was a mess...constantly staring my throat, and palpating things.

So...I found the top of the top, head of neck oncology, world famous, published author, etc...and he told me the same. What is funny is he also said he has trained my other two ENTs at some time. So...well trained ENTs know what to look for.

When I read these kind of statements before, didn't help me. So I don't know what can help you.
I guess when you exhaust every channel...you will have no choice but to stop worrying.

the expert told me.."I don't know how to help you, but maybe when you hear it from 3-4 people, you will be forced to move on"

So...I finally moved on (I think!). it was hell of a 4 months.
I PROMISE YOU ARE OK!!!

It's crazy because some days it feels like it's going to get better but then it comes back and seems worse than before. Then I get back into freaking out that it's something serious and can't seem to break the cycle. I just want the ENT to solve the symptoms. Troubling and uncomfortable. It's like when I swallow the food is trying to get forced down and there is no saliva to do it.

With all due respect, this is terrible advice for anxiety treatment. Seeking out “top oncologists”??? That’s reassurance seeking on steroids. Great that it worked for you, but it generally perpetuates a never ending cycle of health anxiety. The OP should be focused on treating their mental illness, not chasing down reassurance for a physical illness that doesn’t exist.

julieta79
26-07-18, 00:30
Yes, no need to tell me...I had 4 month of this hell. Rotate two good days, and then boom, worse days. It went so bad that two days before my big test in UCLA I only layed down in the bed, and didn't want to stand up. I was so sure I have it, I watched the videos of surgery, read everything in the medial journals...poor hell!

I hope ENT will solve it for you. But he won't...you will NOT believe the same ENT.

Dr expert told me...one CT scan could have solved your problem right away.
Now the wait for results is horrible. But if you have facility that gives report same day...you might try that. Overall, its horrible thing to live through.
Just find one thing that will finally zap it.
It won't be your ENT though. HA people don't trust doctors. You need some sort of test. CT scan is the fastest one :)

I get it and I tried really hard to follow what you say, as I have REALLY bad anxiety.
What makes this issue different is...the symptoms are NOT all on your head. You have pain. Its not like oh ok, health anxiety...move on. How do you move on when your throat HURTS?

So...the reassurance is a problem when everything you have is ONLY anxiety. When you have REAL problem...you go find a doctor who can evaluate you, and has credentials to rule it out.
Bad things do happen to HA people. It is not right to say...oh this is your anxiety, you are fine.

The OP needs to find a way to fix his problem. vague "you are fine" will just spin him out of control. No reading of how reassurance is bad for you will help with the pain in your throat.

I forgot to mention that this issue is often CHRONIC (meaning it doesn't get better in 4 months, or 10 months, so it always reminds you that you have it)...so lots of ppl become "cancerophobic" when it happens. Not only HA. And they go to 25 doctors. Its very common.
So...this is not you regular HA problem.

AMomentofClarity
26-07-18, 00:50
So...this is not you regular HA problem.

You’re kidding right!?!? Aches and pains that have been cleared or diagnosed benign by a doctor, yet still considered life threatening by the poster constitute 90% of the posts on here....here being an ANXIETY website...

The OP has been examined and is actively working through things with an ENT. Encouraging them to self refer to oncologists for additional reassurance is completely irresponsible.

julieta79
26-07-18, 00:58
I am not kidding. I have had all sorts of other anxiety driven things, so I know.
There are millions of stories of patients misdiagnosed with throat cancer, including Michael Douglas...by lots of doctors. You are one click away of becoming HA about this issue even if you were not before.

I think the HA advise should not be followed blindly.

Like I can show you the oral cancer forum...you see the same posts, exactly SAME like this one.
And all oral cancer patients tell you...seek doctor after doctor until you get diagnosed.

So a person with HA posts here, gets the "you are fine, its just HA, trust your dr", and then there "call 10 ENTs because only oral cancer specialist gets this thing correct". Horribly confusing.

The truth is in the middle. You need a diagnosis and a solution. It is not cancer. But it hurts, and you need to be 100% sure why.

PS. You think the OP will get scoped again by the same ENT and will happily move on? Really? You can only work on your anxiety AFTER the panic mode is over.

Like I can show you the oral cancer forum...you see the same posts, exactly SAME like this one. And all oral cancer patients tell you...seek doctor after doctor until you get diagnosed.

I'm an oral cancer survivor. I was on the oral cancer forums during my battle with the beast. The reason I'm here is because of HA posters doing exactly what many others have done. I came here because I followed a couple of serial posters to this site and found they were posting on the cancer forums and on several anxiety forums. I wanted to give them a piece of my mind as it's disrespectful to those suffering. I ended up staying to help. I know what the symptoms are. I know dozens of survivors and how it presented to them all and I have my own personal experience.

You will find one or two that went to several doctors before they found it but for 99% of us, it was obvious. You did a pure HA thing by latching onto those rare cases to justify your fear. When it comes to treatment, I do agree about getting a 2nd or even 3rd opinion as you're putting your life in their hands, but not so when it comes to getting diagnosed. I knew something was amiss. My GP monitored it and when he realized something was up it was fast track city! The ENT that diagnosed me said flat out "This is cancer. I'm not sure what kind yet but I've seen enough to know it is." I had a FNAB and was diagnosed a week later.

These doctors and the specialists you saw told you as well. The doctors have told the OP too! I would have been jumping for joy had ONE doctor tell me I was fine! None did. So when I see things like this?... Arrgggg!

Count your blessings and be thankful. I was really sick. I had no choice but to undergo treatment. Many here are really ill too but the difference is you have a choice to get treatment. You can chase a diagnosis that will never come or treat the illness you do have. What will you do?

You are a wonderful member and has helped me personally a lot. But you were the ONLY one from the REAL forum who told me to trust my drs. I have so many messages from members, all urging me to skip my doctors and present myself in comprehensive care center asap. I tried to escape the grip, but once the members put an end target...comprehensive center specialist..I could not move on by self assuring myself that I am just anxious.

So I agree that anxiety caused me to even go to the oral cancer forum, once you do get there, there is no easy way out.
Same with OP. If you cant trust your ENT, because you read google, you are coming to this forum for reassurance, but you wont stop here..you will browse and browse endlessly.
So while I might have not broken my HA cycle, I am worry free today because I faced my biggest fear, went to a very scary test, lived through sitting next to many newly diagnosed cancer patients in the lobby, and overcame my problem. Today I feel good.
I did spend 4 months trying to follow the conventional "dont search for reassurance" advise and the moment I feel the pain, I would immediately relapse.
All I am offering is how I personally found peace. While suffering from oral cancer is horrendous, being in panic, suffocating and shaking is not a walk in the park either.
Could I work on my anxiety before I am sure that I am disease free? It did not work for me.
I am NOT advising the OP to go to oral cancer clinic. I am just saying what my dr told me...one quick CT scan and you could have been worry free. No need to agonize for months...in my opinion.

I think what Fishmanpa and others are getting at is that chasing down specialists is only going to bring resolution to the CURRENT concern. In reality it makes our HA worse, not in the short term, but in the long term because you are now trained to need that specific reassurance. Sooner or later there will be a new symptom striking a fear of some other cancer or other serious health issue, and the cycle repeats itself.

Could health anxiety cause all these symptoms? Is it possible for the irritation to be caused by swallowing too much and opening my mouth to check it out constantly for like the past month?

I've never had symptoms like this but it also didn't seem like they started until I had the mucocele and started inspecting my mouth more often. Then google: everything that comes back with throat issues has cancer attached to it. It's a struggle because I constantly go through these cycles where I'm like it's just anxiety and then right after "But what if"

I just had my ENT appointment this Morning. He spoke with me about my allergy test and what's going on with my throat. I explained to him how I'm anxious about what's going on and asked him "Are you sure you don't need to do a scope or anything."

He did a scope to make me feel better. He said everything looked normal, if anything this confirms the acid reflux. Now I'm thinking in my head "well, he didn't do a full endoscopy so it could still be something serious" :/

I told you so :) You will NOT believe the same ENT. I just been exactly where you are. If your doubt came back after your first visit, then it will come back DOUBLE now.

Ok...so people here suggest that you stay away from the internet, and take care somehow of your anxiety. Trust your dr, don't seek reassurance, and break your HA cycle.
That might be true in the long term, but for short term, you got to move past this panic BEFORE you can do all the things above.

In my humble experience, you will not be able to deal with your anxiety at this current state of mind. The reason is you will find countless of articles of people with oral cancer who were legit missed by ENTs for months. Even the damn oral cancer medical manual says time from presenting to dr to diagnosis on average is 9 months.

Please don't be scared about these findings, if you sneak in and google and find them. I read them all, they are out there, and there is virtually nothing else...there is no alternative for people with acid reflux and throat pain.

You got to decide what is the ultimate thing that can bring you relief. For me, that was meeting an expert. For you, it might be 20 trips to the same ENT. You just have to understand where is your fear will be curbed.
Then...do exactly that. Calm your nerves. And then form there, when cancer is fully ruled out for YOU (and it WILL BE ruled out), then write down all the things that you just experienced and try to understand what was legit pain, and what was HA.

that is what I do anyway. Will see how long the calm lasts.
YOU ARE FINE

The crazy thing is. The chances of getting throat cancer are only like 1%. I also don't have a sore throat so I guess I don't have anything to worry about really. This didn't start coming along until I had major anxiety because of the potential of cancer because of my mucocele cyst.

At this point something would be more consistent. It feels better and different throughout the day. I have a vacation coming up...maybe that's exactly what I need.

Has anyone had any experience with LPR symptoms and what those contain? I'm trying to continue to ease my anxiety. The doctor looking down my throat with the scope reassured that nothing was there and I was informed that things look good just reaffirms his suspicion of acid reflux.

Also, has anyone else become obsessed with constantly checking their throat? I think that this caused my acid reflux and also has added to the symptoms I"m experiencing. I didn't have these symptoms before I constantly started opening my mouth and looking around every day. Now the symptoms have been going on for a month or so.

You can replace the word "throat" with whatever issue - pulse, lymph node, neck, stomach, etc, and a majority of people here including myself have done the same thing. Obsessive checking is a hallmark sign of health anxiety thought pattern! Then, what you constantly seek, your brain will "find"! And the cycle continues... Read a lot of other threads here and you will recognize this pattern in others.

The thing that causes me anxiety is LPR and Esophageal cancer have same symptoms basically. Even though Esophageal cancer is so rare especially in a young, non-smoker, non-drinker. Not sure why I'm freaking out about this.

Because you’re feeding your anxiety by looking for the worst possible outcome.
Treat the reflux by eating foods that don’t trigger it, using reflux tablets where needed and above all getting a hold on your anxiety.
Your doctor looked down your throat, you don’t have cancer.

Yes. The ENT did look down my throat using a Laryngoscopy. Which reassured me at the time but then I thought, he didn't look down my actual esophagus. Ha, I sound crazy. First, I thought I had mouth cancer because of my mucocele. Then I thought I had throat cancer. Now I think I have esophagus cancer. Would a doctor be able to tell about esophagus cancer for the most part using a Laryngoscopy.

I'm assuming he would order a esophagus look if he thought it was necessary.

I'm a Head and Neck cancer survivor. I've had more tubes up my nose and down the back of my throat in the last 5 years than 10 of you have had in a lifetime. You don't have cancer! How do I know?

Doctors have ruled it out and you're still on an anxiety website talking about your fear of it. You follow that all too familiar pattern of HA as well by doubting the doctors and scientific medical tests. Further testing would be a waste of time and money. That money would be better spent on real life professional help with your anxiety. The brain and the stomach are closely connected. Treating your anxiety will also help treat your reflux.

Reflux isn't fun but it's manageable with diet and meds. My wife and I have it and we take a PPI and follow the FODMAP (https://www.ibsdiets.org/fodmap-diet/fodmap-food-list/) diet. We kept a food diary and eliminated and restricted foods that aggravated it. I can tell you also that when we stray, we pay.

First, I thought I had mouth cancer because of my mucocele. Then I thought I had throat cancer. Now I think I have esophagus cancer.

Skipping your fears around from one disease to another (yes I get that these are all cancer but they're still different) is yet another hallmark sign of health anxiety! As is worrying that the doctor's tests didn't take into account every angle and possibility that your brain in its infinite medical knowledge has thought up.

You do have an illness. It's called health anxiety. Seek treatment for that!

I think it's because I've never had these symptoms before. The difficulty swallowing and all that jazz. It also seems never ending since June.

I also keep jumping on and reading how people my age (30) have gotten esophagus cancer before. Then I read more forums and look up more stuff.

I understand. I also know that I've never had these symptoms before. The dryness at base of tongue and in throat. The difficulty swallowing. Seems like it will never end. I'm on PPI right now and also allergy medicine. I still worry that it won't work. I've never had major acid reflux problems like this up into my throat. However, I also haven't had a major health anxiety like I did when I found that bump on my lip and started looking in my mouth and throat and googling.

Have you read how many people your age DON'T have esophagus cancer? (probably like 99.999%) Have you read how many people your age DO have anxiety? (probably like 10%)

Which is more likely? The 0.0001% chance or the 10% chance? And especially considering the evidence (not your mind's catastrophic musings, the actual EVIDENCE) which is more likely? And why not stop reading cancer forums and start reading more of this one (or other health anxiety boards)? You'll see many people in the same pattern as you are in.

Respectfully, you're on an anxiety website seeking opinions from strangers after getting professional medical reassurance. You have a 5 page thread with dozens of replies offering reassurance, help and advice yet you're still doubting  This is textbook HA behavior.

If you're truly seeking help, that should be done in real life with a mental health professional that can teach you techniques to reassure yourself when the irrational thoughts start to take hold.

If you truly understand, you would be accepting the doctor's diagnosis and heeding the advice that's been given to you.

Thanks. This is my first bout really of health anxiety that has been this bad. So the symptoms are there and I even asked the ENT about it. He said what everyone here has been saying. It can make the symptoms even worse.

Do you know of any good books to read about coping with Health Anxiety? Not just anxiety but strictly health related.

You absolutely, positively do not have esophageal cancer. This is classic health anxiety.....you’re worried about 1 thing, then once it’s proven you don’t have that you move to something else.

As has been said already, you need to be treating your anxiety.

I’ve been to ENT for follow up on mucocele surgery and he checked it out. He informed me my throat looks cobblestones and says it might be allergies or acid reflux.

6 pages of reassurance and it's not helping. If you're that concerned see your doctor but I urge you to show him this thread and ask for real life help with your anxiety.

I'm a survivor of two heart attacks, triple bypass, stents and Stage IV Head and Neck cancer. I have real life health issues that can put me 6 feet under. You have an illness that's doing that to you above ground.

Maybe it’s just not knowing where the issue is located. I’ve been taking the PPI since last Friday.

---------- Post added at 08:09 ---------- Previous post was at 07:58 ----------

Just trying to see if anyone else has experienced similar issues. I’ve never had these symptoms and I’m 30 years old and have been in great health. Another thing was I had a blood test done during my normal physical that I do yearly to check cholesterol. Everything came back PERFECT.

So i don’t know why my throat would be doing this. The issues literally started after I noticed those red blotches in the back of my throat. Then I became obsessed with googling and looking in my throat. Symptoms haven’t stopped since.

You’ve seen an ENT multiple times. He examined and scoped you and found nothing. That means you’re fine. You’ve convinced yourself that something is wrong so you’re searching for it, even though it doesn’t exist. This is health anxiety 101.
Why don’t you do something about the anxiety which you fully acknowledge having?

Well, we do understand, because we have been where you are & have felt the fear. Any new symptoms of illness are scary, and it’s even worse when there’s no magic pill to help.
But you did the right thing by getting checked out at the doctors, and getting tests to get nasty things ruled out.
Now that those nasty things have been ruled out, and they have been ruled out, you have some options:

1). Treat the reflux with reflux remedies - diet, medication, relaxation.
2. Treat the anxiety that you’re getting - relaxation, cbt, therapy
3. Ignore all this, and spend your time googling & worrying.

Now is the time to try something new. It’s not as easy as doing nothing, but it’s better in the long term.

You think he could see if there was anything through a scope looking at my voice box and stuff? He said if anything it shows acid reflux. I’m not sure what that means. My kid was misdiagnosed forever before she was ruled to have meningitis. That’s why I worry.

He looked at my throat. He scoped my throat. Those were the tests I had. Symptoms are a pain. Anxiety is a pain.

There is a section straight out of David Veale's book which I mentioned earlier that applies here. It's too long to copy/paste but it boils down to this:

There are two theories to your problem. Theory A is that you have a serious medical condition and that you should do everything in your power to discover it and then treat it if possible. Theory B is that you have anxiety and no serious medical condition.

You have been using Theory A as your model of thinking. Has it helped? Has it cured you? Has your problem been solved? If the answer to those questions is "No", (which that is the answer here) then it is time to take a new approach. That approach is to try Theory B for three months (but actually first try it for just one day!). Since Theory A is not working, perhaps Theory B will. Try it out. Theory B. Treat your anxiety, not your throat.

Very scary about your child being diagnosed late. I hope she’s ok now?

Yes I think he’s trained in what he does, and you can believe his opinion.

She’s fine now. The thing is my ENT wasn’t even going to do a Larry scope until I asked. Then after that now I feel like I need more. My throat isn’t painful. It’s just uncomfortable. You know, feel like when I swallow something is there.

Here’s the question: these symptoms literally did not start coming on until I had a mucocele and started shining a light down my throat like 24/7 and googling. Now I can’t stop the symptoms.

Scass
01-08-18, 17:49
That’s the basis of health anxiety. Something can trigger you and unless you reign it in, it’ll take over. And you (we) keep feeding it by googling, seeking reassurance in a constant unhealthy cycle.

If I really focused on something- a sensation or niggle, I reckon I could turn it into a problem for myself. In fact I have done many a time.
I’m currently suffering from reflux myself, one of my early symptoms- when I didn’t know what I had, was a feeling in my throat like there was something there, and no matter how many times I swallowed, it was still there. It’s a common anxiety symptom called Globus. Once you start to ignore it, and focus on healthy thoughts instead of negative ones, it’ll go.

I used to get one symptom, go to the GP and be told I was fine. That symptom would go, and another would pop up in its place.

When doesn’t it bother you?

Right!!! Then if you google about it 10/10 you get cancer as the cause. Have you experienced any soreness or irritation from looking in it and worry so much? That’s why I’m concerned. The symptoms won’t go away.

The more you focus your thoughts to the "symptoms" the more ypu will notice them and increase the feelings and or sensations. I was convinced a had an AAA i could feel my pulse, not just see it (im pretty thin) but actually feel it. Felt my abdomen was full, abdomknal pain and sometimes ezcrutiating lower back pain and when it wasnt really bad it was still a constant thing. Went the gps and was told nothing was wrong, then went for a scan and the lady showed me my aorta. Strangely enough after seeing i did not have an AAA all my aymptoms vanished in about 2 days. My back pain waa real, it hurt, couldnt sit up straight or get comfy, had to ise water bottles and sit in certain positions. It went down my legs and made it hard to walk on occasion. ALL CREATED BY MY MIND AND MY OBSESSION. its very real and if you keep going you will never get rid. Im doing the same thing about my heart again. 3 docs told me im ok, ecg amd blood preasure fine and cholesterol fine but im being like you are now. Got a cold the other week and my slight tickly cough is a aymptom now, head ache a symptom, pain i honestly cpuldnt say if its even there. Im off back to the gp to start on my meds again and to try and get over it as its my longest laating fear. Weird how my symptoms vanish when im pre occupied as well isnt it? ;D

Like getting over ocd you have to let the thought in, dont focus and lwt it straight out. Liaten to fish, man knows what hes talking about and in my logic brain if a doctor even thought i had a chamce of heart disease they would NOT mess about the aame as with cancer. Even a small stethoscope test can give away tell tale signs ans then onto more tests, same as with your condition.

Youll get there.

Why does my throat still feel so irritated and crappy then? Feels like something is off. I’ve had a scope (July) and a CT scan (September). Nothing found. It’s still feeling off though. Why would it feel that way? Would Anxiety really cause this to be ongoing for so long!!!

Yes I am. It’s because I still feel symptoms which make me think something is seriously off. Why would I have all these throat symptoms if it was just anxiety?

My sister had like stage 1of a super rare oral cancer. Yet her dentist noticed it long before she did. Even before testing was done, they were talking about the b c being very possible for her. You've had clear test! Which is great! No doctor wants to push further with this.

Like I had a serious stomach infection easier this year. The more I thought and thought about it even after it had been treated the pain seem to linger on and on.

While excuse me as I haven't read all the post but have you talk to your gp about this constant state of worry and getting some help about it maybe?? Like I'm not a doctor of course so I can't tell you everything you need to hear but I think you've gotten the all clear with the tests you've had? I know I tended to doubt doctors myself with results but it's over a year later and I'm still here without any of my major worries!

I went to doctors office this Morning because of upper respiratory thing I have. Asked her if my tongue looked good and she said it looks fine. This was another doctor/nurse as well. She looked at my throat and didn’t see anything abnormal.

I did ask about reference for anxiety as I told her I’ve been worrying and I don’t know if it’s serious illness or something like anxiety. She said they can medicate and I asked about reference for therapist first.

The irritation in throat just seems never ending!!!

I've never had these issues before until in June. I went back to ENT today for a follow-up because they are persisting. He informed me that I could probably stop taking Acid Reflux meds since it's not getting better.

He wants to try a Oral probiotic as my tongue seemed to have a coating. He checked my throat and tongue.

I still have irritation and inflammation in the back of my throat, tongue, and what have you. He informed me that it's nothing serious such as cancer they've seen so many of those and it doesn't look to be that. It looks benign.

I feel like in a couple months it's going to start showing regarding cancer. I can't help but think this is cancer. It's gone on too long and won't go away.

Anyone else experience this? I also forget to have him check a lymph node in my neck that I can feel. I'm so worried.

This isn’t meant to be mean, or rude, or whatever, but it’s an honest question.....what exactly do you want from people on here? You’ve had multiple doctors, tests, and exams confirm that there’s nothing wrong, yet you continue to look to untrained internet strangers for advice.
Nothing anybody here says will make you feel better. I know this from experience. You need to treat the mental illness.

Here’s my concern. I’ve read so many stories of those with base of tongue cancer and other cancers of the head and neck who weren’t officially diagnosed for months to years.

They said they were told the same thing as me such as “acid reflux (didn’t work), allergies (didn’t work), and even spoke about irritation as I have which eventually was biopsies as cancer.

My ENT keeps saying it’s not cancer but it’s only been 3 months. He also said he wants me to try probiotics because my tongue now has a coating. He said if that doesn’t work he will try thrush medication and after that he doesn’t know.

Im freaking out.

I don't doubt you're having some minor symptoms. It just isn't cancer. In the three months from when I first noticed a swollen node, that node went from a small grape to a golf ball. Being a survivor and knowing many others that battled H&N cancer, I find it insulting that you are still pursuing this after all the clear test results and doctor visits.

Well, the point of my question was that you have absolutely no idea how to identify cancer and you never have identified it before. But your ENT has extensive experience in doing so.

So how can you be so sure that your absolute novice analysis - cancer - is correct, and the ENT's experienced analysis is wrong? Logically it would be quite baffling. Why not try and come up with some more reasonable explanations?

Perhaps. Does that seem like a possible explanation to you, have you been checking it every day? If so maybe you do need to give yourself a week or two of no inspecting. Stand by that as your explanation whenever fears come up. Resolve to not worry about it until after that week or two.

I spoke with my doctor and she asked the same thing. I told her yes because the CT scan is really the big test that can be done. If something doesn't show on the CT scan then nothing is there that could have been missed by a doctor.

CT scan will confirm that this is anxiety and then me and the doctor can work to treat health anxiety moving forward. So what happened to this? You have had your gold standard test already. You have significant evidence to reframe your thoughts. I'm sorry but a sore throat or lump in throat feeling (globus hystericus) is not evidence of cancer in the face of multiple doctor visits and scans that say otherwise. It's up to you to reframe though, I can't do it for you.

And why does the tongue coating matter? Did you ever stop to think that it could be completely unrelated?

Are you still checking for things to be wrong every day? Stop checking. Even if it is cancer, checking it every day doesn't cure cancer so you aren't helping it no matter what the situation is by doing so. Stop checking.

Use mouthwash daily, that will do the trick.
A sore and lumpy throat can also be when you are run down and it sounds like you are running yourself down.
You are spiralling out of control.
Try to think of something else and get on with other things, otherwise you will drive yourself mad with over obsessing. :)

Yeah but online articles are saying cancer is on the rise due to HPV induced cancer caused by oral sex. I’m just worried because these symptoms feel unending and my tongue even feels like it’s burning too.

So idk.

23-10-18, 14:04
I had a coating on my tongue years ago as a child, my gp said it was nothing. Just lacking in vitamin or something. Any she shrug it off. I had enough of a coating you could scarp it off. Yet it was nothing, this issue went of for years. I was like 10, I'm 22 now and nothing.

I think I've also commented on this before about my sister having a rare oral cancer. It wasn't missed as long as your case has been if it was something being missed. You're just looking for bad news, bad cases. Like other users have said here, you can't keep thinking of the negative. Like I remembered you promised your GP you would let this go and get therapy or CBT if she got you a CT scan (I'm not sure if you have gone for help, so excuse me if I'm wrong.) I'm not a doctor but even if there was cancer in a super early stage. Surely it would be noticed before you even have symptoms. Which you clearly have.

jray23

Yeah but online articles are saying cancer is on the rise due to HPV induced cancer caused by oral sex. I’m just worried because these symptoms feel unending and my tongue even feels like it’s burning too.

So idk. Those articles are meaningless. Someone had a good post on NMP a few months ago about those, unfortunately I have no idea who or where it is. But basically an article says something like "oral cancer rates are increasing due to HPV" sounds awful right? But in reality it increased (these are just example numbers) from 1 in 10,000 people to 1 in 9,700 people. Not quite the epidemic the article appears to be.

You seem to counter every piece of logic with "yeah but". You need to start countering your catastrophic thoughts with "yeah but" instead. I can't guarantee you don't have some sort of physical ailment but I would bet the works that if you improve your anxiety situation that your symptoms will decrease. So if you don't like your symptoms, focus on treating the anxiety.

If everyone in the US who had oral sex got cancer, we wouldn’t have a population over age 22. Just like most smokers don’t get lung cancer, most drinkers don’t get liver disease, most fill in the blank don’t get fill in the blank.....most sexually active people don’t get oral cancer.

While anxiety itself cannot cause your tongue to have a coating, the side effects and symptoms of anxiety (reflux, GERD, muscle tension, globus etc.) certainly can and are common symptoms and side effects of anxiety (https://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/articles/symptoms).

I'm an oral cancer survivor. I wish I had the all clear like you from the medical professionals I saw. Nothing you present sets off any alarms with the exception of the HA alarm. After all, you're posting here :whistles:

So what your saying is I need to go to a cancer center but then if they say it’s all clear will it really matter? I just had a brand new ENT give me a second opinion last week. He didn’t see any concern. Can this really be psychosomatic?

Why would I pay out the wazoo just for reassurance? I’m convinced I have oral cancer because of the irritation and uncomfortable back of throat. I also am
Convinced because I’ve had oral sex with just one person. Been with this person since we were 16. Didn’t start having oral sex till we were 25. What’s the chances of this?

0.000001%.

You're so far deep down the HA rabbit hole you aren't even seeing crystal clear sarcasm by fishmanpa.

Perhaps instead of checking in with your throat every day you should check in with your mental state every day?
