So today I was basically on campus and using their wifi, and I searched for a picture of a bomb to send to my friend as a joke for some reason..

They monitor wifi there and probably filter what students look at, what if I get into trouble for searching it? I'm so worried:ohmy:

Would they talk to me first or just go straight to the police?

Presuming you weren't looking up details on how to make bombs and various dodgy sites, and just searching images, nobody would care at all or even notice. They base this on the fact that not everyone who does a google search for the word 'Bomb' is a threat to society. :D What about peple doing research on the world wars at college, bombs would come up then?

I'm sure you are not the only one who has searched that. Unless you have an extensive search history on how to purchase and/or make bombs they probably wouldn't even notice (maybe not even then).

How are they going to trace it back to you?

Hopefully nobody cares, that would be a nightmare if I got called down to the office for searching for bombs:huh:

If nothing happens in the next 2 weeks, then nothing will probably happen at all:huh:

I still don't understand how they will trace you though unless you login to something with a login and password.

You have your own student number that you log in with

ahhh ok. I really wouldn't worry about it to be honest.

I think your anxiety is making you worry over something that is really nothing.

If that were the case, people everywhere around the world who log into free wifi at hotels, schools and businesses and elsewhere would be at risk for the police coming after them for looking at a bomb pic or porn or any of the millions of crazy things people look at!

This is just like your cancer thread, just a different theme and equally a non-issue.

Earlier I posted a picture of a rocket on a thread so Nic won't be pleased if this is an offence!

Your library will be full of such things.

What does the student wi-fi policy state? Do they have anything about misuse? Internal code of standards are up to them so whether they don't like certain types of imagery or language is their call.

It sounds very unlikely based on what you said anyway, they would even see the jokey intent and it not being malicious (including religious, racial grounds).

They would probably have such searches blocked anyway which is very easy for them to restrict.

As far as the greater issue of the law goes, it will differ per country, but the intelligence services will be monitoring many sites and types of searches. That doesn't mean you wake up to your front door being booted in though, many people might look at iffy or dark web stuff but they will be looking for people who pose potential threats. Otherwise anyone who was a Muslim renting a hire car online would be in trouble these days!

Intent & content matter. Looking up how to make and distribute bombs to harm people or other weapons is a no no and may get flagged to them. Reading about the bomb itself is another matter i.e. Wiki and many other sites will have pages explaining them from a historic & technologic point of view.
