Hi, how much of a link is there between anxiety and raised blood pressure?

I suffer with anxiety and my BP is recently elevated, 140/80 I've noticed when I bend down and raise I'll get this momentary light headedness which is worrying.

I've seen the doctor about this but he's said it's to be monitored but no meds.

I don't smoke, not overweight, I'm fairly fit through cycling, resting HR of 49/50, occasionally drink alcohol, only take asthma inhalers and lansaprozole for acid, but I have this anxiety which sometimes can be crippling and has held me back through life.

For me, it's a direct link. I take both ADs and beta blockers. I know both the anxiety/depression and high blood pressure run in my family, so for me, there was no way that they weren't going to be linked.

Have you looked at your family history?

I don't think it's in the family, but my father suffered with anxiety.

I've been getting slightly dizzy when leaning over and raising again this week and today my face feels flush, not sure if that's anxiety as I'm pretty wired for some reason.

It could be either. The best thing to do would be to monitor your blood pressure at home and keep a log for a couple of weeks to show your doc...and let the doc make any conclusions as to patterns.

But if you have HA, I would not do this...as usually it only feeds the obsessions.

I won't do the BP thing, I'll see if I can get an appointment to see the Dr on Monday and have him take it properly.

I never knew if I've put the cuff on properly or sitting correctly if I do it myself.

I did see him around two weeks ago, he wants me to try Citilopram for Dysthymia and anxiety, I declined.

Why did you decline?

Why did you decline?

I tried it around ten years ago, it didn't do anything except kill my sex drive.

Well, there are many out there. I was also on one that killed mine, but the one I'm on now, it's just fine.

I've been on Lexapro (escitalopram) for 5 years now.
