View Full Version : Dull chest ache/pain - only when taking a deep breath
24/M. About a month ago, I suddenly got a dull achey pain at the top of my sternum, in the centre, when taking a deep breath. I was concerned but managed to calm down. This lasted a few days and then went away. I thought nothing of it, but it's been back again for the past couple of days. My breathing is otherwise normal - only when taking a deep breath do I feel the ache/pain. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Do you have reflux, or post nasal drip...a cough?

Hi ankietyjoe. I'm not aware of having reflux or post nasal drip though cannot say for sure that I do not. I've got a very slight cough, with a bit of mucus on the throat, but it is very very mild.

Chest pains when breathing in are usually something like reflux, or irritation to the throat or esophagus. Even a slight cough with mucus in the throat could be enough to irritate the pipes. Reflux could cause your dull chest pain as well.
Can also be rib related, too. I have had costrocondritis a number of times, and that made deep breaths uncomfortable.
