I was scrolling through all of these posts this week trying to ease my mind about the colonoscopy that I had today. Thought others might benefit from my experience. I had the colonoscopy because I'd had blood on the TP a while back. Since I'm 50 (I am an american living in ireland - in the US screening starts at 50) and have a family history of ulcerative colitis my GP referred me for the test.
I was anxious to the point of tears about all of it - the prep, the sedation, the procedure, the results. And each one proved to be just fine.
PREP - I was prescribed Moviprep. The taste isn't bad, just really sweet. And the bowel movements that followed weren't that bad. I followed a low fiber diet five days before and didn't eat at all yesterday and I think that really helped. The prep is the worst part, and it wasn't that bad.
SEDATION/PROCEDURE - I was so scared of this procedure. I hate the lack of control that comes with sedation. I got sedation that I was told would make me sleepy. And I guess it did make me a bit loopy but I didn't fall asleep and I remember the entire procedure, even talked to the doctor and nurse the whole time. IT WAS FINE! I didn't feel a thing. The procedure only took about 15 minutes because my bowel was very clean and apparently, I have a very straight colon rather than a curvy one which makes things go faster. I was actually in shock about how quick and easy it was.
RESULTS - all my results came back clear. No polyps, no sign of colitis, no biopsies. He said the bleeding was most likely due to straining from the constipation. He suggests I have another colonoscopy in five years since I do have the family history of UC.
Hope this might help someone feel better if they are facing the same sort of thing and their HA is kicking into overdrive.
