Hi all, not sure what to make of this one.
Given my on and off trouble with bowels over the last few years, and mild problems before that, my partner and MIL have bought me a Microbiome Test kit for my birthday! Hip hip bloody hooray!
They hope that it will give me some ideas as to how I can improve diet etc to help with bowel issues - IBS related.
It's made by Atlas Biomed, but my pack is branded by a company in Wales that specialises in producing foods that help with gut problems - is naming them an issue?
No I was all up for it, but I've read up that some of these tests can pick up calprotectin and blood levels and stuff like that so I'm getting quite anxious about it. I don't know if this particular one does though.
Has anyone else done one?

No not a joke, as the test is over a £100.
And it's partly my fault as they asked me a few weeks ago would I like to get this test, which can help direct you to sort out your IBS. And I though yeah why not if it's straightfoward and not scary. My MIL has done one a while back.
But upon registering the kit, it has an example of the report you get, and theres a section which says what bacteria's increase your risk of things like bowel cancer, crohns, diverticular diseas, malabsorption, and how much of those bacteria theres in your gut.
If I knew it had information like that I would not have gone with it.
Now my partner is making me feel guilty as it cost a lot of money.

I agree. It's a terrible choice and certainly no "present". You can't risk your health just to appease your partner who doesn't want to have wasted £100+
I will also tell you that these Microbiome tests are truly not good idea because they pick up EVERYTHING that is in your gut - some of these may act as pathogens when they overwhelm compromised flora, but otherwise are not harmful at all! So, why do you want to know if you, for example, have Clostridium Difficile which should NEVER BE TREATED if producing no serious symptoms; it would give me huge anxiety because I actually did have C Diff colitis, so to know that they are still there, albeit kept in check, would upset me . There are billions of bugs in our microbiome and everybody's gut is different and you can never really know what you miss in terms of good bacteria. I know a lot about this because, as I mentioned, almost five years ago I got C DIff infection from horrible, multiple , very strong antibiotics ( that, by the way, I did not need).
Have a look at Symprove. Read up on it, read the reviews and even try it for 2 weeks when you should experience some benefit. I’m coming to the end of the 3 month course, not really benefited me apart from more energy, though my issues seem to be a hernia. My missus has reluctantly taking it and cannot believe how well and different she feels on it. She cc wasn’t rough but takes a lot of meds for thyroid issues. Good luck
I got C DIff infection from horrible, multiple , very strong antibiotics ( that, by the way, I did not need).
I've a sneaky suspicion that my current abdo woes are to do with a course of 'horse strength' antibiotics I took (needlessly) earlier this year. Haven't been the same since. My insides don't know what's hit em! Can't give a pasty a sideways glance without the my colon throwing a tantrum! :lac:
