Hi all

A few days ago pretty much all of my gums became really sore and inflamed, started bleeding I started to find it difficult and very painful to brush my teeth and eat hot or spicy food. The glands beneath my jaw became swollen and tender and I generally felt unwell. There are also small yellow spots on some of my gums and inside of lower lip which burn and sting.

My dentist thinks it is some kind of viral or bacterial infection and has prescribed me with antibiotics and booked me in for a good clean. I am now on the second day of the antibiotics and still in a lot of pain and can only eat cool, soft foods.

I started Googling around to see what could be causing this and I came across a rare bunch of conditions caused ‘pemphigus or pemphigoid’. The oral symptoms seem to match mine! I’m now absolutely sick with worry. I really feel like demanding a referral to an oral specialist. Has anyone been through a similar fear??

The problem here is that you started googling!

Trust the dentist on this, take the antibiotics and see how it goes.

I'll have to agree with the previous post!
I can't count all the times I've had symptoms that match with some rare/serious diseases etc., but turned out to be nothing severe. :)
Antibiotics also often take a few days to start working.

Hang in there!

Keep going with the antibiotics they can take a few days to kick in and I'm sure it will get better and the cleaning your dentist is going to do will help too 👍
And keep brushing and flossing too even though your gums are bleeding the mistake people make is to stop brushing the areas that bleed thinking this will help but its actually the opposite 👍
Hope this helps!

Hi all thanks for the replies I wish it was that easy!

I’m in a bad state at the moment though this infection (or whatever it is) is getting me down. It came out of nowhere and doesn’t show any signs of letting up. Eating or drinking anything remotely spicy or hot absolutely kills!!

In the last few hours I’ve got myself into a right frenzy thinking of leukaemia. I read this story on dailymail of some unfortunate woman who had a gum infection that wouldn’t go and the next day she was diagnosed with leukaemia! Why oh why do I always come across stories like this :’(

So I went back to my dentist today. He decided to refer me to an oral specialist as he couldn’t tell me what was causing my mouth and gum issues. You can imagine my anxiety becoming sky high. He didn’t think it was anything serious and that it would most likely pass in a few weeks but he would rather have the appropriate specialists take a look.

Definitely has put a downer on my mood..
