Started Trazodone

Hi All,

I have just started trazodone 50mg and was expecting it to help with anxiety. however i think its making my anxiety worse. I'm also on 60mg of clomipramine, just come down from 120 3 days ago. I also take 15mg of olanzapine for anxiety

anyone on this med id greatly appreciate some encouragement.

It is unlikely to have a positive effect that quickly, or at that dose, Paul. Trazodone only begins to act as an antidepressant at doses around 200mg and most need to take at least 300mg for optimum results. As with all ADs kick-in typically takes 4-12 weeks at a therapeutic dose.

The clomipramine dose reduction could be contributing to the increased anxiety especially given the large dose drop. Was 120mg the most you took and how long were you on it?

120mg was the highest i took. i was on the med 7 months laterly 90, 100 then 120 mg. It was makeing me worse i had no energy to do anything but it still didn't help with anxiety.

Im now on 75mg of trazodone as i suspected this is the dose for anxiety.

just trying to get through the days.

Itd be good if anyone whose on it to chime in.

As per above, trazodone only begins to act as an antidepressant at around 200mg/day, but it may ease anxiety at lower doses by sedation, Paul.

Trazodone is mostly only prescribed for SSRI induced insomnia, not anxiety/depression, these days which is a pity, imo, and even then not that often in the UK as GPs there seem to prefer mirtazapine. Been really hard, psych has upped my dose to 150mg start tonight. Some positive feedback would greatly be appreciated

That's good as it brings you near to the minimum therapeutic dose which is usually somewhere in the 150-225mg/day range.
