View Full Version : Ukraine invasion nuclear fears

Hi all,

A very different post from me, as all my previous posts here have regarded specific health concerns. In the past couple of years I've done much much better with my HA. I spent some time on anti-depressants which helped a hell of a lot, and have been off them for nearly a year with no significant relapse. I'm certainly not cured, just managing the HA far better than before.

The Ukraine invasion by Russia, and Putin's threats have prompted a very different form of anxiety in recent months, specifically around the risk of a nuclear attack or all out nuclear war. Even in previous conflicts (such as when there was some speculation that Iran could cause WW3) I've been able to be rational and think, that won't happen and have even reassured others.

However, with the current situation I cannot shrug off the concern and fear that there could be a nuclear attack, or that use of tactical nuclear weapons would inevitably lead to nuclear war and thus the end of the world. I cannot see any end to the invasion of Ukraine, as I can't see either side backing down (nor should Ukraine have to back down, being the innocent invaded party to the conflict).

I find myself reading more and more on the subject, and every time I begin to push the thoughts and fears to the back of my mind, Putin or some other high ranking official will issue a not so veiled nuclear threat which makes the headlines and restarts the cycle of fear and worry. What really concerns me is that even speaking with rational people who are not worriers (in the hope of reassurance), people who normally would shrug things off, they all say that they think Putin is mad enough to actually do it.

Would be great to hear the opinions of others, though appreciate any reassurance will be limited given that ultimately nobody knows what could happen.

'Headlines' is the issue here mcohen. Did you notice something significant after the Queen's very sad passing was announced? The Ukraine/Russia 'special military operation' came to an abrupt halt on the same day. Then once the 2 weeks of official mourning were over, it started up again. Very considerate of Mr Putin. But of course it didn't stop, the media just made it appear to have stopped by ignoring it. Thus do they decide what we hear and when we hear it. Not to mention what we should think and feel about it too. Kind of like my wife actually.

If Putin did order the pressing of the red button (heaven forbid), it would essentially be self-inflicted suicide. And all for the sake of wanting to 'own' Ukraine. Plus as per usual, our media seem to be milking it to death, just as they are with the COL crisis, constantly repeating the same old same old.

On a similar note, what happened to all the hysteria surrounding North Korea a few short years back? Barely a dickie bird from the media about them of late. Ditto for Iran.

Would we all be worried about our energy bills if there was a proven threat of a nuclear attack? Would we be bothering about a CoL crisis?

The media are always eager to put the fear of God into us over something or other. If it's not about the threat of being nuked to death by Russia, Iran or North Korea, it's the COL crisis, Covid, Monkeypox, Polio, etc, the threat of ISIS terrorists, violent crime committed by feral teenagers, you name it.

I bet many people older than me (45) remember the the ever-present threat of being nuked by the Russians back in the 70s and 80s, and of course the IRA bombing and shooting up many of our city centres during both of those decades.

But back then we didn't have 24/7 rolling news channels with endless wall-to-wall coverage of events, nor the Internet and social media, like we have today.

I wouldn't be worried. It would be nice & warm and the glow would take care of lighting.

^ this. The world didn't stop for the period of morning, it just took over the headlines.

Very brave words Terry!

I wonder what's happened to Confusion and Frank T? Especially as both always previously seemed to have kittens on here over stuff like this (no offence intended).

Well I would say all my troubles would be over but SOT already looks bombed so Putin will probably not waste a nuke and I'll end up growing a tail and a second head.

Hopefully they are staying away from the media. And not joined up to a Ukrainian militia.

I have no worries about growing a tail or second head, living near enough in nuclear terms next door to GCHQ, I'll be dust by the time others on here realise WW3 is in progress. That helps remove the stress or worry about nuclear war

That's my thought as well. I'm around 70 miles from DC and I'd have barely enough time to kiss my rear goodbye before I was dust so.....

Embrace it, I say. If it happens, try to be as close to ground zero as possible - it'll be the quickest, most painless death possible. Far better than slowly dying from some awful disease in old age whilst your ungrateful progeny and their spouses come up with another round of excuses as to why they couldn't come and visit you this Sunday. Shit, I'd take near-simultaneous atomic vaporization over that scenario anyday.

Not that I think it will happen, mainly for two reasons. First, the billionaire 0.1%ers who actually run this godforsaken world enjoy their position at the top of the food chain too much to ruin it and have to go live underground in badly lit bunkers, slowly cracking up from the stress of knowing it's a Mad Max wasteland above their heads. They'll have no more peasants to push around and exploit, and physically, they are to a man (and woman) wholly incapable of surviving in such a harsh environment. No more valet parking and facial scrubs down at the spa resort, quelle horreur! Two, as others have pointed out, wasn't it polite and considerate of the Russians and Chinese to observe HM's official mourning period like that? You could almost have imagined there was nothing going on overseas at all, such was the level of global respect shown...And the very next day following her funeral? Why it was suddenly back to 24/7 war porn courtesy of the helpful MSM, full steam ahead doom. Funny how predictable that was, you could literally have set your watches by it.

And if someone is saying they're sure "this is it, it's really gonna happen now, full on nuclear war, OMFG!", call their bluff. Ask them why, if they really believe that, they aren't immediately quitting their job, ignoring the bills, maxing out the credit cards and heading off to the nearest holiday resort with a load of booze, pills, and hookers, to live it up for their final days? What are they waiting for?

Some pretty hilarious responses from certain FMs in this thread, turning what many might regard a scary situation into a bit of light-hearted humour (generally in nice ways).

Shows how many of us on here have a good sense of humour deep down!

I saw someone put a video up of HIM mourning QE II and thought it was BS so I just googled it.... And low and behold, it was true. He was a bit annoyed at not being invited though. 🤦

I just wanted to say hi when I saw your post about war anxiety. It could have been written by me as it describes exactly what I’ve been going through since this all started. I completely understand how you feel and you’re not alone.

I’ve been trying to limit my doomscrolling. Not easy I know. I try to set targets where I won’t check for a certain number of hours, and try to build these up. I do fail, but then just start again.

There have been some slightly more reassuring words lately. Putin recently said he was not considering using nuclear weapons as there was no military or political point in doing it. Also, China have been more vocal about how they should not be used, and they hold some influence over Putin as he’s banking on that relationship for the future of Russia.

So hang in there, and try to focus on what’s important in your own life. For me, I’m trying at the same time to overcome my agoraphobic tendencies which got so much worse over lockdown, and get myself back to the office when it’s still much easier to work from home! Anxiety is great fun isn’t it?!

Some interesting comments there Andy, as I have been thinking very similar things over the past few days regarding the Ukraine conflict, especially with the talk of the Russian troops pulling out of one of the key Ukrainian cities also over recent days. I know we aren't completely out of the woods as yet as far as said conflict is concerned, but it's still a significant breakthrough nevertheless.

Also demonstrates how farcical this whole war effort has been pretty much from the off, and it would be nice if Vlad just did the decent thing and ultimately gave himself up for once and for all, if not only admitting defeat and calling an end to this needless and pointless conflict which has not only claimed innocent lives in Ukraine itself but has also partly contributed to this global COL crisis.

Just wondering how everyone struggling with their anxiety over the Ukraine war have been getting on lately.

Personally, I’ve been very up and down. I still have days where I can’t stop myself from doomscrolling, and get very tied up with worrying about what might happen next. I don’t want to voice my biggest fears as I don’t want to upset anyone else here, but you can probably imagine the kindle of scenarios I worry about.

Is anyone else still in the same situation?
