Hi kimmy,

welcome to the site I'm new too only been here from Monday.

I have been having panic attacks for nearly 5 years but have got them under control most of the time. They still put the wind up me too even though I know what they are but it does get easier with time. Unlike you I did think I was going to die or have a heart attack which lead me to being obsessed with my health for the last 5 years. Just becuase your counsellor has suggested seeing a mental health worker doesn't make you schizophrenic or mental or anything like that so don't be scared it is just they are probably better qualified to deal with your type of problem. I really don't think it is schizophrenia that you have as people tend to loose touch with reality altogether and they also hear voices in their head etc. Pease try not to worry as i think it probably is just anxiety or panic attacks you are having as everyone can get different symptoms. And you will be yourself again soon I'm sure.

Everyone on this site is very friendly and I'm sure you will find it helpful as it has helped me better than any meds/therapy etc in just a few days.

People here are always here to listen and help as much as they can.

Take care

Love Lisaxxx

Hi Kimmy

Welcome to the site. Your counsellor is just suggesting referral to a mental health worker as being someone more experienced to help with your anxiety and panic. It doesn't mean she thinks you are schizophrenic. You wouldn't be questioning your thoughts if you were.

You'll get some good help and support here.

Hi Kimmy

Welcome to the forum.. We're all pretty much in the same boat - yes, we wish we felt like we did before and the symptoms can be different for all of us but our common bonds mean what we experience is pretty similar..

Many people fear they're going mad, becoming schizophrenic and all kinds of other things but the truth is that the anxiety/panics are what's making you feel that way.

Everyone here wants to help and support and also understands how you're feeling - it's a great place and it's full of advice that actually works.. Yes having panic/anxiety isn't good but it does respond very well to treatment (in all forms) and by positive thinking too.. this place will help you on many levels.

Good luck and good health.

hi kimmy,

glad you found us; I really think joining this site is just another step in going back to the normality that we all cherish.

Also, take up the advice about going to see specialist. I am seeing an occupational therapist who works for the mental health team, but that doesn't mean I'm mad!

Looking forward to more postings from you and perhaps a visit in the chatroom http://pub4.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/342349380

Hi Kimmy,

Please don't be put off by the job title, it's no reflection on you.

I'm a Primary Care Mental Health Worker and I have some personal qualms with the job title myself. People seem to have come around to the idea of counsellors but wiour job title, the 'mental health' can be off-putting. I always stress with clients that it is my remit to take on patients with mild to moderate common mental health problems, the everyday problems that most of us will encounter in some point in our lives, often as a result of our circumstances.

Yes, anxiety and depression are normal! It is unfortunate that the term 'mental health' has traditionally had a stigma attached and it's a difficult one to lift. I hope by people in my role becoming more visible and increasing in numbers, will help to reduce it and realise that mental health is a concern for all of us. Sorry to get on my soap box but I hope you can see how passionate I am about this!

The reason you will have been referred to a PCMHW is most likely because the counsellor feels you could benefit from a more applied input to your problems. I take lots of referrals via the counsellor when they feel people need some structured support and guidance in strategies that will help to overcome the problems. We use self-help materials and guide clients in using them to help themselves learn the skills that will help them not only during the course of the sessions but for the future. These materials are largely based on cognitive behavioural techniques and there is evidence to suggest that these can be as effective as medication.

This role is still developing and there is no national consensus on exactly what we will offer clients but I have given you a broad outline to what we do and I hope that will help.

Good luck
