[8D]Hi Im new on the forum, been suffering from anxiety/panic for a year now. I haven't had a full blown attack for 3 mths, but still have horrible anxiety every day...esp.tension/tightness in the chest. I use valerian a lot, but need something stronger...and was wondering if anyone has tried kava kava. I am going to order some from www.kavakava.co.uk, but thought I would check with you people first. Any good? I am getting desperate for some kind of relief from this. Also does anyone else get this chest tension for long periods of time...like all day, nearly everyday? Thanks for listening, Dave

Hi Dave ,

That link isn't working ..

Kavakava has a great reputation BUT is currently banned in the EU and the USA and Canada pending investiagtions into fatal liver failure side effects.

There is anecdotal information that these people may also have been using alcohol 'medicinally' too which might have something to do with it.

Look on our symptoms page and here search here for information on chest tightness - extremely common and harmless.

I knew about Kava Kava but have never taken it I have to say.

Have you tried Rescue Remedy too?

Thanks Meg, I know about the aparent dangers, but I think it is worth trying and better than resorting to the valium the GP gave me. Nicola, rescue remedy to me is completely useless, I felt nothing at all on taking it...don't onderstand how it works for some people...but maybe its just me. I've read the Claire Weekes books which are good and say to just 'Accept' and 'Float on past' the symptoms. This is really hard, but after a while, the fear does subside and I do actually accept the weird sensations as just anxiety. But it's been a month or so of accepting it and my chest anxiety feelings are as powerful as ever! I have been taking SJW for 6 wks too and wondered if that could have increased the anxiety...any thoughts? Anyway if it doesn't subside shortly, I am gonna try the Kava kava(I've had the chest symptoms for a year!). In the mean time...thank you loads for the site...it has really helped to know I am not alone and the chat room is great too...keep up the good work, cheers, Dave.

Kava Kava has been used as a medicinal herb for hundreds of years . Kava Kava has four main therapeutic properties. First Kava Kava is one of the most powerful of all the herbal antispasmodics especially useful for relieving nervous tension throughout the mind and body. Second, Kava Kava is an anti-anxiety herb that will quickly almost instantly dissipate effects of the many fears and apprehensions. Third, it is an effective diuretic with potent anti-spasmodic and anti-pathogenic properties. Fourth, Kava Kava is a carminative that improves appetite and digestion. The combination of these properties makes Kava Kava useful for the treatment of arthritic and rheumatic conditions, which is one of its traditional medicinal uses among South Sea Islanders. Topically, Kava Kava can be applied as a fomentation or ointment for mild general anesthesia for the local relief of sore muscles. Kava Kava can also be used to treat rheumatism, asthma, worms, obesity, headaches, fungal infections, leprosy, gonorrhea, vaginal infections, urinary infections, menstrual problems, migraine headaches, and insomnia. Kava Kava was also used as a diuretic, an aphrodisiac, to promote energy, and to bring about sweating during colds and fevers.

Kava Kava is an all natural root extract that is generally ingested as an herbal supplement or drink. Kava Kava is known world wide for helping to relieve anxiety, depression, symptoms of insomnia and other related emotional disturbances. The active ingredient in Kava Kava is 'Kavalactone' which is found in the root of the plant. Kava lactones cause reactions in the brain similar to pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for depression and anxiety. Research has shown that kava lactones have a calming, sedative effect that relaxes muscles, relieves spasms, and prevents convulsions. Kava Kava lactones also have analgesic (pain-relieving) properties that may bring relief to sore throats, sore gums, canker sores , and toothaches. kavalactones--the active ingredient of kava kava--are thought to reduce anxiety by modifying the activity of a portion of the brain known as the limbic system.

KAVA KAVA BENEFITS (http://www.nutrovita.com/store.asp?filename=kava-kava)
Kava Kava calms the nervous system by binding to GABA sites in the brain and by exerting generalized effects on the brain's limbic system. Kava Kava may help people recovering from stroke because of its ability to protect the brain from damage caused by oxygen deprivation (experimental). Kava Kava may be a useful adjunct treatment in epilepsy due to its anti-convulsant properties. Kava Kava relaxes skeletal and smooth muscle tissue in many parts of the body. Kava Kava may help relieve mild pain (except mental).
