Hi all.

I just wanted to submit a post with regards to those who suffer 'throat problems' as part of an anxiety symptom.

I have had an annoying clicking/grinding sensation on the right side of my throat (just at the back of the base of the tongue) above the Adams Apple for about 4 months. It's not painful and does not inhibit any swallowing regardless of food or liquid, but it is extremely annoying. If I turn my head to the left it doesn't happen, but otherwise, it's a nuisance. It's as though it's a cartlidge problem or something like a soft bone which click when swallowing.

However, after seeing a specialist (which took about 3 months to get an appointment in UK) I was on the list for a Barium Swallow Test....being as the camera up the nose is a no no as far as I'm concerned! Yes, the usual went through my mind....throat cancer etc etc.

For the benefit of those who have never had a Barium Swallow test, don't worry. It's not that great, but it's not that bad either. Mine was banana flavoured and was similar to what |I can only describe as swallowing a very very thick milkshake (but not as tasty). As you swallow, they take x-rays and photos of your throat etc. Then the worry of waiting for the results.

After seeing the specialists 2 weeks afterwards.....and several trips to the washroom whilst in the waiting room, I was informed that they found.....nothing!! No lumps or bumps or restrictions or any bits and pieces etc. Everything was normal.

I was told by the ENT specialist that this problem is very very common in anxiety sufferers and is different to the 'lump in the throat' or Globus Hystericus problem, which is just as common. He said that although there is nothing there, the feeling is very realistic, even to the point of being able to feel the clicking or grinding if one places the fingers there when swallowing. So, once again, another waste of time (albeit peace of mind) on the NHS. If only they done more research into anxiety and tried to find more ways to alleviate the symptoms naturally, I'm sure they would save millions of cash in the end.

However, I didn't post this in order to 'grind my axe'. I just wanted to try and put fellow sufferers minds at rest regarding 'The Throat Problem!

Take care everyone.

Kevin.

Thanks Kevin for letting us know about this. I agree with you that a lot more research and time with patients would save the NHS a lot of money.
hope you're doing OK now.
