hi

it is a viscious circle the more u think the worse it will feel. and it's easy to say dont think about it cos u wont be able to help it, try anything that will keep your mind busy reading books even the tins in your cupboard if you cant concentrate on a book, singing even, unless u sing like me lol u just have to ocupy your mind to u wont stop breathin the best thing i found was yoga as they teach u to be aware of your breath but not to control it it is great for relaxation and u can but dvds or videos so u can do it in your own house hope this helps a bit do try not to worry though take care xx

Hi Caz, I know how you feel and it's sooooooo scary. I woke this morning at 5am and zoomed straight in to my breathing. I felt I had to concentrate on in and out breaths as my body wouldn't do it itself. I got myself so wound up and my breathing went hey wire. Yawning, sighing, felt like I was suffocating the lot. I put a cd on and let my mind wander with it and then realised I could breathe without concentrating on it. Do try distraction of any kind - it will help. x

I think this is a typical symptom of anxiety – health phobia. I had a similar symptom and I often jumped out of bed cause I though I was going to pass out. A visit to your pathologist will reassure you that there is nothing wrong with you. Try not to concentrate your thoughts in your breathing and always remember that this cannot really heart you.

Hi Caz, I have been feeling exactly the same a you over thelast year or so. I keep on thinking that I have to breathe and if I don't concentrate on it, that my body will sop breathing. I am now eeing a cognitive behavioural therapist who is helping me deal with this issue in depth. He has been extremely supportive and has given me lots of tips on how to deal with it! I would be delighted to give these tips to whoever wants- i just thinkit may be too much to put on the forum. However, what I do want to say is that I always feel that I am not breathing sufficiently and that I just can't feel the breathe! One rick is to realise that when you are fast asleep you are definitely not controling your breathe- this just shows how automatic your breathing is! Let me know if you need any tipss! I'd be more han hapy to help anyone- not sure if they will work with you but they are gradulay working with me! Just remember that the body is conditioned to bretahe and that if your breathing isn't right you would have tonnes and tonnes of problems aside from your breathing. Doctors never tell us that since we may get paranoid about the oher symptoms. BUt- if you manage dto write on this forum- that measn that you are breathing correctly! People who can not breathe properly would not be abl eto do things that you are doing now. I yawn, sigh, cough, drink - all symptoms to convince me that I am still brething- but he basic fact is that if I don't concentrat eon bretahing (ie I reda a book or watch tv or chat to a friend) I stop thinking about my breathe and I still don't die!!!!!! :) sounds easy to say I know, but so hard to do- with time and patience I'm sure you'll be feeling great again! Good luck!!!

Hi Caz

I know what you 're going thru, I ve been there myself , I know how scary it is...But look .....The time when these problems occured was 9 years ago.... I am still here today, and still breathing indeed !
Do you always feel your heart beating ? I dont, and i am sure thats normal, but 9 years ago i was constantly checking my pulse just to make sure it was beating, because I coulnt feel my heart beating and i was scared, I do know today that all this was anxiety related and worries. Rest assured....you dont have to "concentrate" or " check" about your breathing . Did you have to concentrate on your breathing when you were born, I am sure not, it came naturally and it carries on naturally. Hope that helps.

Florence. x

Caz,
me again, just replied to you on the other forum... I really can understand what you are saying with not being able to feel your breathing. I have this too and have tried to explain it to an ENT specialist but he seemed to think it was quite humourous. I do not know how to describe this feeling to someone who has not felt it so I tried to explain it as trying to breathe through cotton wool...(that mufled, almost suffocated breathing feeling) as that is sort of what my breathing feels like. I know the air is going in and out but my body panics that it can not feel itself breathing. I always need to draw extra deep breaths and even that doesn't help sometimes...Is yours anything like this?
At the moment I am seeing a dietician, a western doctor, an integrative medical doctor and a naturopath. So far all they have discovered all up is that I have an anxiety disorder and high insulin levels... GREAT! so no relief yet, but let's stay hopeful... Maybe it is just the anxiety playing crazy tricks on my mind and body... if it is I hope it clears off soon as I am not much fun to my friends or family while I am like this..always frustrated and hyperventilating and anxious...
I hope you start feeling better soon. You're obviously a fairly strong person as many people can't cope with things such as this.
Take care of yourself and know that the air will keep circulating, email me if you like and we'll keep in touch.

Hi caz, I have been concentrating on my breathing for a couple of months now. the Dr thinks it is my diaphragm being so tense, that along with concentrating on my breathing, this is causing me grief. I also feel like my breathing does not increase sufficiently whilst increasing my exercise levels ,and once more I feel I have to take over my breathing so as not to pass out. The funny thing is We all seem to be breathing properly whilst asleep. I also feel like i am under breathing from the moment that i wake up.
