I thought I'd post a poll to get a read on who is having what type of palpitation, since the term has many different connotations.

Multiple choice.

my palpitations seem to take on different forms from time to time. mostly, they of the "heavy beats" variety where i can feel my heart beat throughout my entire chest area. some times i get flutters with loss of breath.

I've had 'skipped beats' for my entire life probably. Now they're getting worse (lots of known reasons, so it's no surprise), I can't sleep - seems like every sleeping position I try triggers more ectopics, sometimes it takes 4 hours to calm down and by the time I'm so tired I simply don't care how to sleep & disconnect. When I'm at work (office job) I have to sit for 7 hours, which is a torture, because I know that without exercise I will get palpitations, and I do. I try to exercise at work, but I know that 1-5 minutes will do no good. I need minimum 30 minutes exercise to feel good, even though I have usually some palpitations after it. Sometimes I get this weird feeling I can't really explain, but maybe you'll understand me if you had something similar - it feels like my heart explodes or turns over, followed by feeling of heat and generally unpleasant feeling there, as if something is pushing my heart down, or touched it with bare fingers. It's not painful, just unpleasant and annoying, because when I get it (usually once a day) I know more ectopics will follow, and they do.
Well, this is my experience with palpitations. I have stopped taking caffeine, tea, smoking, alcohol, I exercise more, but palpitations are stronger than ever. The only thing I can think of is my office job, which I don't like too much (even though it's easy), which is causing me stress, and lack of real exercise because of it.
Thanks for listening!

I have had PVC's for the last 2 years. They seem to lessen for awhile and then I get them more often. I usually experience the "missed beat" feeling. But sometimes it is the flutter and breathlessness. I think that is worse!

I have two kinds.

One of them is a really fast heartbeat (around 160 bpm), but it takes a lot of anxiety to trigger them.
I experienced this last summer when I unfortunately had to confront a maniac with a knife and talk him out of stabbing some old man who he tried to rob. If the palpitations had happened while in front of the knife I wouldn't blame anxiety, but it happened about an hour later.
I experienced the same palpitaions just a couple of weeks ago, when me and my family went home by car from the holidays which we had spent in a cabin in the mountains. The weather was terrible, it was in the middle of the night far from home, and it rained so hard it was impossible to see the road, ligtning flashing and parts of the road floaded.
Rapid heartbeat isn't very scary to me, as it is the absolutely most common symptom of panic attacks. I just hang in there and wait for the minutes to pass.

The other kind of palpitations I get is skipped beats, and they scare me the most. Sometimes they come in short runs, but most often it is just one. If my bloodpressure is high, from walkin stairs or exercising, they are especially uncomfortable, as the beat following the extrasystole feels a lot harder than when I'm at rest..

hey
Im so thankful to have found this site , its been such a relief reading posts and seeing im not alone!
About a year after i had my son i started having anxiety attacks ( i have experienced panic attacks in my teens and think they are totally different) so i was put on 10mg of citalopram twice a day, dont really think they helped but had to come off them anyway after a few months as i fell pregnant again this time with twins! so anyway i felt absolutely fine through the pregnancy. Im not sure why but maybe because i was so involved with everything else that was going on, we were also trying to buy our first house before the babies arrived so you would think with all that stress and all i would have terrible symptoms. To cut a looong story short the first time i had ectopic beats was the first night i left the kids overnight, it was the most scary thing ive ever felt. This thud in my chest and throat then i felt really hot and dizzy for a minute or so, it was awful and happened 3 or 4 times in the space of about 5 minutes, i did the wrong thing and sat taking my pulse which freaked me out even more.
Ive been on iron tablets since the babies arrived and the doc says that anemia can cause ectopic beats , but i still think a lot of it is stress related. Its always scary but im handling it better and i wont let it rule my world!:yesyes: Peace x

Hi there - Mine are PVC's (premature ventricular contractions) - they are sometimes single, but most often really random - maybe 4 normal, then 1 PVC followed by 2 normal etc. I have been checked out, but that doesn't make me feel any better. I worry, (maybe a little dramatically!) that my heart will get into such an irregular pattern that it will go into VF - I'm sure that's what most of us think! I can sometimes stop it with a big cough. I think the hot, faint feeling immediately afterwards is an adrenaline rush caused by fright!

Mine are thumping heart beats i can feel in my throat (86 beats on average) and a flutter on occasions.

Just mainly thumping thumping heart beats i can feel when i settle down to watch tv xx

Hi to you all,
Mine are missed beats which still frighten the daylights out of me.Sometimes they go for hours on end every second third or fourth beat, then they disappear for no apparent reason.Sometimes they give me a small cough with each missed beat.Whish I could ignore them. When there not happening I do not worry about them and get on with my life.
Good health to you all.

Mine are nearly always where my heart will pump in my chest. I usually end up having an attack and becoming convinced that my heart is going to explode in my chest.

thinking about these attacks is upsetting me. The pain I feel is soo indescribable :(
I honestly thought I wouldnt pull through today. I just wanted to die!
Luckily the pain vanished after a few hours and I feel a bit calmer now. I try to block my thoughts. I knows thats not what people say I shouldnt do. But if I dont ignore them they take over my mind and I jsut want to die. I have to block them!!!!

Those of you posting on this thread may find the following quite interesting, or you may not . . . but I'll post it and take my chances. :shades:

I have been relatively palpitation-free since the end of July. Yes, every so often I will experience one or two, but I could not tell you the last time that I felt one (I get the top four choices of the poll here -- but the worst, by far, is the feeling associated with the "flutter at the bottom of the rib cage and momentary loss of breath").

However (now here is the interesting part):

Today, I found a thread in one of the other sections where someone was talking about their heart (and anxiety issues associated with it).

I decided to post, and tell about how rapid heart rate, skipped beats and very high blood pressure sent me to the hospital for the first time in 52 years on July 28 of this year. AND, how I have been panic attack free since then.

I made my post and went around reading other threads.

And what do you think happened?

I got a skipped beat sitting here.

After getting it, I momentarily felt that initial burst of adrenaline, and got another.

So I got up out of my chair and began to walk around. I would get one every so often.

Knowing what was going on -- and the fact that I survived the terrible ordeal in July -- I knew I was not in any danger. Although that is VERY hard to convince oneself of right in the middle. It took a bit of time before I found myself "coming back down" from it -- but I did not cross over into panic, and for that I am giving myself a high five.

It seems -- and I'm not just imagining this -- that I would get these in the past shortly after thinking about them. Even if I had been skipped-beat free for a long time, if something would make me think of getting them. I'd get them!

And so it was again today.

Does anyone else seem to find the same thing? Remember, it only takes a external "suggestion" to trigger. One does not have to be thinking specifically of skipped beats. If you've ever been taken to the hospital for them, seeing a hospital on TV is enough of a suggestion for the subconscious mind.

Think about it . . . or, on second thought, don't think about it!

wow. amazing, that happens to me often - or should i say when i think, "hey, i havent had a flutter in a few days." the BAM a few minutes later or a few hrs later i get the flutter. its cray how that stuff works. it kinda reinforces that its all mental and not a serious condition!

I hate to say that misery loves company, but it is somewhat comforting to know that others have experienced what I've been dealing with for the past few years.

I remember one very frightening episode of irregular heartbeats after I had just left an airplane and was waiting at the baggage claim. I thought for sure that I was going to have a heart attack and that I would die without seeing my family again. Now I dread getting on a plane again for fear that I'll have the same episode. This is going to be a problem as I have a lot of business travel planned this year.

The cardiologist diagnosed me with ectopic heartbeats, but that didn't seem to alleviate my fears. I notice them particularly after I play competitive sports--again, always after the heat of the battle. I guess that's just the adrenaline talking.

Anyway, I'm glad to have this forum to read your experiences and to vent. Thanks.

Mostly 'skipped beats' which I am told are really early beats, with normal space afterward which gives the impression of missed beat. Have had these for over 20 years on and off and this time every day and loads of times a day! Sometimes fluttery feeling in throat but think this is just another form of ectopics. Rarely racing and no breathlessness with the ectopics

Very similar to the above... premature beat followed by compensatory pause that seems to force breath out; making it hard to breath in. Then the large thud, followed sometimes by a flutter where the throat meets the chest plate... then finally a panic attack.

In fact, I've just come in from a chinese restaurant and had some really nasty flutters and breathlessness at the table. Very scary...

I've been getting heart palpitations for two years.
I'm awake right now as they are pretty bad!
ok so I will describe the pretty bad ones! as sometimes I get light palpitations too.
my heart is beating very hard,
the pace is erratic, example, two very slow beats, missed beat which feels like a flutter and then a few hard fast beats.
I hate when I can literally feel my heart stop, and sometimes like right now! my heart beat seems to disappear as in I can't feel it!.
other sensations are my chest feeling tight,
Ive also noticed It feels hard to breath as if someone is pressing on the soft spot at the base of my neck.
worse part is when they are bad i get really anxious which makes them worse. the bad ones can last a few hours to a few days!

HappyNow
11-03-09, 23:41
It tends to vary with me. Sometimes, just like bubbles in my chest. Sometimes bangs, often two fast beats every 3-4 'normal' beats.
At worst, it seems like I'm having them all day long, and we all know how bad they feel at night.
My palps even, and I SWEAR this is true, even used to rock the bed - but that was years ago when we had a wooden framed bed and it used to creak just from my palps

Interestingly, I found that I could REALLY feel them by placing my hand to my ribs on my left side - and whoah, ever seen the film 'Alien'!!!!???

Just started on Propranolol again, and.... nothing, just proper sinus :)

I get kind of a mixture to be honest. It's mostly fast and heavy beats fels throught my whole body and all pulse points. Horrible and scary, but i'm learning to remind myself, that there's nothing really wrong with me and it's just in my mind!

this is one of the symptoms i have had since day one, and have never really got used to it, propranolol is very helpful, they have lessened over time but have never completley went away, and increase in times of more stress or worry. i hate them:weep:

Hi, Ive been have missed beats on and of for about 3 months. In the last 2 weeks ive had them 24/7 every third or fourth beat, however now it has changed from missed beats to like a flutter. When i feel my pulse its like 3 or 4 beats in quick succession. This is happening a few times a minute with the odd missed beat as well. Sometimes it is so bad that my heart feels totally out of sync. anyone have the same?

mine seem to beat so fast all the time due to feeling anxious, but when im having a really bad day, my heart feels like it is going to come through my chest, i struggle for breath and its such a frightening exsperience, a daily occurance and doesnt get any easier, which i thought it would.sam

Wow, I've only recently joined this board and I always wondered what this feeling in my heart was. Like I'd be just sitting watching tv quite relaxed and it will feel that i've just run a mile as my heart races, then it feels like it skips a few beats then i'm left really breathless like all the air has come out of my lungs! I've never associated it with anxiety, because it usually happens when I'm not thinking of anything.

When I am thinking of stuff that makes me nervous then my heart either races or it thumps heavily in my chest - mostly a bit of both!

I am having an episode of the "heavy beats" at the moment... it started a few days ago and is getting worse. Right now it is happening several times a minute. I have only had palpitations once before (several years ago) and I was given Propranolol for two weeks, and after that it never happened again. Until now.

Mine feel like flutters, missed beats and then I'll have a whopper of a heart palp that will leave me coughing or breathless.

johnbyrum
08-10-09, 23:03
I used to have racing heart with flutters in different spots of body, but usually bottom of rib as you say, now they converted to skipped beats all the time.

BUT; it is just like never2late said, I completely agree with him. Even before I read his post as I was reading others' I had a flutter at my left rib cage (tho not the exact spot). I hadn't had a flutter for some time but as I am reading about it, BAM there it comes. So people, try to think about them less, that will help. And I will also tell you something. I constantly have skipped beats lately. But I was on a trip with a group last weekend and guess what, I didn't have a single event! Why? Because I was busy doing other things. Try to keep yourself occupied, do puzzles, play an instrument, just keep your brain busy so that it will not think of silly things

btw skipped beats FTW LOL

blondekay09

mine 'skip a beat' and then catch up. I was refered to the hospital 4 tests but not had the results back yet.... they told me it might be a right broncle blockage and said that that means that there may be a blockage in the nerve threads in the centre of the heart which would cause the beat to miss. Im not sure that it is that but when im aware of a large gap in beats it brings on a panick attack sometimes. Wondered if any1 else was told this and if they have anything to add about it?
thanks
