For almost 48 hrs now it has felt like my throat is really narrow to the point that even swallowing fluid has been difficult. I know this is a symptom of anx and I don't fear it is anything major it is just really really annoying. Most times when I get it it's only for a couple of hours but for the last 2 days it has been constant from when I get up to when I go to bed. Hope someone has found a quick fix for this although I doubt it very much. Keep smiling everyone :)

Hi Liam,

I also get this sensation with anxiety. I practically tear at any blouse I may have on trying to get my neck clear even if my blouses aren't near my neck. I know exactly how you are feeling, it is quite awful. I try breathing techniques and do just about anything to try and relax my body. Sometimes I do not realize that I am tensed up. I breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. Very controlled breathing. I focus on it, not my throat. It helps. I try and take relaxing baths or showers. I listen to music - basically whatever will work for you to relax. When this is over you might want to backtrack in your mind to see if anything had upset you or what might have triggered it.

The last time it happened to me I was hiking up a mountain with my father who is 75 and I was worried sick about him so my throat started closing up. It was not fun trying to hike and breathe while your throat was closing up at the same time! Sorry that I don't have a quick fix. I hope someone does!

Take care,

Laura

sometimes an over the counter antihistimine helps me. it sorta clears out the mucus back there which can aggrivate the closed throat feeling, i think.

here is some information from medicinenet.com:

DRUG INTERACTIONS: All SSRIs, including citalopram, should not be taken with any of the mono-amine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor-class of antidepressants, for example, isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), selegiline (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=45547) (Eldepryl), and procarbazine (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=45892) (Matulane). Such combinations may lead to confusion, high blood pressure (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=378), tremor (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=504), and hyperactivity. If treatment is to be changed from citalopram to an MAOI or vice-versa, there should be a 14 day period without either drug before the alternative drug is started. Tryptophan, a common dietary supplement, can cause headaches (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=20628), nausea (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=41943), sweating, and dizziness when taken with any SSRI.
Use of an SSRI with aspirin (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=697), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=9520) or other drugs that affect bleeding may increase the likelihood of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

it doesnt look like there is an interaction.

as a side note, when I was on Celexa, I about had a heart attack over the no-pain reliever interaction, since I've been basically living on them for headaches since this whole mess started, and what my doc told me was there is a theorical connection between the two medicines and bleeding, but its rare and unless you have a preexisting blood condition its not a big worry.

Just to add to the information that Jen has given you, I think it's probably safest to ask the chemist whether a medication will be ok for you to take or to suggest suitable alternatives. :)
