Hi there

Fibromyalgia is one of the diagnoses I've got and I've got similar symptoms to you. The confusing thing is a lot of these symptoms can be the result of anxiety too or even hyperventilation, which you might be doing if you've got a pain in your ribs.

I'm looking at something called myofascial pain - often something confused with fibromyalgia. I'm trying to make an appointment with a myofascial release expert - there aren't many of them in the UK who are properly qualified. What part of the UK are you in?

Hope this helps

Sue

I've had fibromaylgia for the last 10 years, with exactly the symptoms you have described - burning, tingling, aching, stabbing pains in all sorts of placs throughout the body. My main area of pain is in the ribcage (costochondritis) - probably due to the fact that I do a lot of computer work and handicrafts which take their toll on the uppermusculature and joints - and also in some measure due to the fact that I tense up constantly when I am anxious.

It can affect any part of the body, and is correctly described as a heightened pain perception (nociception) in the soft tissue which coats the joints and muscles. The best thing you can do for yourself is to read up on the condition and work out ways in which you can lessen the effects. You might also log on to the ukfibromyalgia.com website which is full of information and has forums like this one where you can talk to others with the same condition.

Sounds like the fibro has hit your sciatic nerve - pretty common - it runs down the back of your leg. I get this sometimes too.

You should go to the doctors to get a firm diagnosis, although the diagnosis you get will depend on how well read your doctor is. Mine was familiar with fibro and diagnosed it straightway (I had never heard of it) - some doctors still refuse to believe it exists. Anti-depressants can have a sedating effect on fibro - the SSRI (selective serotonin uptake inhibitors) pills I found to be particularly efficacious, exerting a slight sedative effect generally on the body. But they are after all merely a respite for this kind of pain and you shouldn't rely on them long term.

The other thing to remember is that the symptoms of fibro can mimic just about every organic disease known to man so it is only n atural to think that you have some serious health problem. Whatever you do don't google your symptoms - you will drive yourself insane. If you had some serious organic disease your doctor would have diagnosed it by now and you would know about it. The very transitory nature of the pains often signals fibro - a different place and different sensation every day - as I have found over the last 10 years.

You will learn to live with it once your fear of its symptoms is replaced by rational thought. Chin up and grin and bear it.
