As most of you know i went to the dentist a few days ago.. he looked at my teeth,gum.. and i made him at that area in my cheek.. he didnt even take a good look at my cheek.. i say that because he didnt even tell me what it is or how to treat it!! my mouth is feeling awesome my gums are looking very healthy so are my teeth all is well but that area in my cheek!!!.. ive even started looking at it again because its not changing!!! i really dont know what to do.. i had to borrow money from a mate just to see the dentist and he didnt even tell me what to do about the problem i was most concerned with!! this is exactly what he said '' here use this mouth wash and your gums will start to look heaps better .. oh yeah it might even fix that thing on your cheek as well '' ....... ..... ........... ...

im trying hard not to blow this into a big deal im tying to stay calm.. my mouth is fine but that area in my cheek.. my gums are looking heaps better.. but that area in my cheek is still the same!:scared15: i mean he was working in my mouth and didnt say anything about it.. i showed it to him and he didnt even really tell me what it is!!! i wanted to go to the dentist so i didnt have to worry about oral cancer or anything like that:wacko:

ps. ive worked somthing out myself about it... you know on the inside both of your cheeks theres this one lump?.. okay well.. on my right cheek that lump is tottally normal.. i figured out that thing on my other cheek is that lump.. but it looks all messed up!! does anyone know if those lumps serv some kind of purpose to the mouth??? because the one inside my left cheek looks damaged.. and thats what ive been referring to the thing on my cheek.. ive only just realised thats where the lump is(no i have no bitten it)

Hi Malv

You've helped me tonight; my turn :winks:.

First of all, if your dentist thought the cheek thing was anything to worry about, he would have been all over it. He spends all day looking into people's mouths, he would know if there was a problem there, and would definitely follow it up - it's in his professional interest and would probably liven up his day :).

I think the cheek lumps - just either side of the mouth, right? - are just connective tissue and, basically, they allow your mouth to open wide. They're like flaps of extra tissue that stretch out when you open your mouth. Kind of like how you have an extra bit of skin at your joints - feel your elbow with your arm stretched out, or the skin between your thumb and finger. They're weird lumpy bits in your mouth because your skin is different in your mouth - it has to be because it's always wet in there :).

One of mine is bigger than the other. I think it always has been and I've never worried about it - just one of those asymmetrical body bits. If yours looks different in other ways, perhaps it suffered a trauma in the past and has got some scar tissue? Again, if the dentist glanced at it and didn't think anything of it, I really don't think you should worry.

Having said that, most health practitioners should allow you a re-visit about the same issue or follow-up phone call at no charge or at a reduced charge. My doctor does this - only charges me a 1/3 of the regular price if I go back to her with the same thing. She charges nothing for a phone call. If you're really concerned, maybe try that.

Don't worry - your mouth is fine (except your gums, which are getting better) :).

What you're talking about is your saliva gland, which he told you was swollen. You have salvia glands on each side of your face, and in your case is called "dry mouth"

The opening of the duct of the parotid saliva gland is called Stenson's Duct. Everyone has two of them. They are located on the inside of each cheek beside the upper molars (back teeth). They can be felt with the tip of the tongue as small "flaps" of cheek mucosa ("skin") running from the back to the front of the mouth, about a half inch long and about even with the chewing surfaces of the top back teeth. Unless they become infected they are difficult to see, They tend to have a bluish tint which is sometimes more easily seen than the actual tissue flap. One, or upon rare occasion, both of these can become infected, in which case they may manifest as swollen, red and sore bumps in the same location. This is most likely to happen when saliva flow is reduced from its normal levels, often due to prolonged usage of decongestants and antihistamines or other drugs which cause dry mouth. Infection of Stenson's duct is another example of a retrograde infection in which normal oral bacterial flora ascends up the duct because too little saliva is descending from the parotid glands into the mouth. The usual treatment is a course of antibiotics (generally penicillin or Zithromax).

Oh... hm. Good point BraveKelly. Is it the back of your mouth, Malv, or the front, near your lips?

It's in the middle of the mouth closer to the lips. I've seen his "lump" as I'm his wife.

The dentist told him he has a swollen saliva gland, which is what he is talking about, but he's such a worrier and never listens to me :weep:

The dentist told him to get a certain mouth wash and tooth paste, which is for dry mouth, dunno how he has dry mouth as he's always droolin :roflmao:

Hello Malv,

STOP WORRYING - EVERYTHING IS PERFECTLY OK.

I do exactly the same as you. I get something checked out, and feel fine about it, and then a few days later the old anxiety starts creeeping back in. You were emotionally drained with all the worry about your mouth - it sometimes takes time to level your emotions out again. Listen to your wife, she sounds fantastic; knows exactly what the dentist said, and loves you too much to take any chances. LeeBeee has wonderful advice too. Please don't go worrying yourself sick about this - leave it alone - forget about it - it will most likely sort out before very long, but in any case you do not have to be concerned. Hugs x x

Hi

I got a little lump on each side inside my mouth on the cheek area, and one of them has a bit of a rough surface because my teeth keep rubbing it. Could it be that?

Hey malv, focus on the fact that the dentist wasn't worried about it. He went straight for your gums where he could see that there was a problem, which he has treated. The cheek thing obviously didn't raise any alarm bells in him. Sometimes with cysts and benign stuff like that, if it isn't doing you any harm, it is better to leave it alone. Maybe the cheek thing is like that. I have a lovely cyst I have on my back. The doctor looked at it a couple of years ago said "yeah it's a cyst" and that was that. It's still there, and still hasn't done me any harm :hugs:.

Malv,

The point is the problem can't be fixed because it really isn't a problem.......only to you.
One of my best friends got cancer of the mouth and believe me, she was seeing a specialist that afternoon. Dentists know exactly what they're looking for, he's treating your prob as trivial because to him it is, its only major to you.
I do understand how you feel though, because i went through something similar a few months back. And the fact is i had to learn to believe my dentist as hes qualified and not me........ stop looking at it hun and listen to your dentist........and your wife lol!

di xx

Hmm, sounds like how I was with my mole a few weeks ago. I kept stroking it and poking it until, unsurprisingly, it was a bit sore. Which freaked me out . Also, you can make a part of your body hurt or tingle or itch by thinking about it all the time. Focus on another part of you body in the same way that you are about your cheek spot for a few minutes and you'll see what I mean. Worry about your nose for 5 minutes. Imagine that there is something wrong with the end of your nose, wonder if it is hurting or throbbing. It will be :).

A dentist would see oral cancer without you having to point it out.

No need to worry in my opinion.

My mate who is a dental nurse assures me that your dentist will know what he is looking for. If he had any concerns then he would have done further examinations. I do think that you should take his advice and if you are still conerned in a week or two then go back and see him or get a second opinion.
