Feel like I am being replaced at work

I've just found out that, in my absence, that work have recently hired someone to do my job.

I am terrified that this will mean that there wont be a job for me to go back to. I've been off for 3 months with depression/anxiety, and feel little better than when I was first signed off and given medication.

I can't help the fact I am ill. God only knows I wish I was able to function normally, but hearing this news today has sent my already bad anxiety skyrocketing and made me feel sick to my stomach.

Why does life always kick you when you are down, huh?

I think it is illegal to do this, when you are on sick leave. Check with citizens advice as they are very good with employment law. It may be a temp of course.

Your work can hire a temp to cover for your time off (like they can hire temps to cover maternity leave) but still hold your job open for when you return.
(I think there is a time limit - see millie's post about being sacked for being off sick for so long).
Best to get advice from CAB or union, or even ask HR to clarify your position.
