that if I plug my ipod nano into my new laptop & have to download itunes onto it that I will use all my old songs that on are on my current i tunes that are on my old lap top? I don't want to loose anything when I update the i tunes on my new lap top!

Your songs will all be on the hard drive (C:\) of your old laptop as far as I know. You'll have to transfer them to the new laptop - they don't live with your iTunes account.

On mine they're in folder called itunes music.

There's good online support from Apple. If you're giving it to your son, he can show you how to use it by lunch time on Christmas day :D
