Clompiramine help.

Can anyone please advise me...I've been prescribed clomipramine 25mg a day and have taken them for 4 days. I feel awful again today (aching/shaking/not with it) and don't know whether these are going to work for me. I know it takes 2-3 weeks to get them into your body but I am having real trouble tolerating this..

is it worth sticking with them?????

hi,
i had pretty much the same trouble with them.
i took them for 4 days then stopped,then thought i best give em a real good shot,so another 4 days later i tried again,only to last 5 days.
side effects were just no good for me,shaking was so visible,and headaches.
my shrink was a bit dissapointed they didnt have desired effect as i think we are running out of ideas now.

i may give them another go in jan when im indoors more and not so busy with work-btw are you still on them or given up

I felt ill the first few days after starting clomipramine. It does pass, or it did for me.

Hi all

I've been taking clomipramine 25mg in the evening for over a week and still feel anxious/low - should I increase/reduce/leave as it is??? It doesn't feel like its doing anything but making me tired...

25mg is a pretty low dose. I was up to 100mg at one point and I understand you can go up to 250mg.

sorry to go whingeing on but.....

I've been told to take 50mg by my Dr and last night I took it - today I feel very shaky/weak and like a jelly......is this normal? shall I keep taking the 50mg for a while? - i feel better in my 'head'...

All the older tricyclics have noticeable side-effects, especially when you start taking them. The side-effects are nothing to worry about if you feel better in your head. Many of the side-effects will pass after a few weeks.

In some cases people find the long-term side-effects are too much of an inconvenience and quit the medication, but they will not harm you.

I felt dizzy when I started clomipramine (though in quite a pleasant way :) ), and also had stomach pains for a few weeks.

After trying about 4 different newer ADs, which never helped at all, my Doc put me on Clomipramine. Best thing ever, I never thought I would almost be back to normal again!


They took about 6 weeks for side effects to stop, I was on 50mg. Felt like I had morning sickness all day, constipated, dry mouth, headaches, and boy, did my anxiety go through the roof. After about 2 months, I felt much better and positive. Then had a family bereavement, and rapidly went down hill. DOc increased dose to 100mg, and again, had the usual side effects again.

AT one point I thought i was a lost cause, and my Doc had said that I was very very ill (I had just had my baby), but Im almost living a normal life again, going out with friends, shopping, taking daughter to school, cooking, cleaning etc. I could not do any of these things before this med. I feel Ive almost got my life back!

I really would try to be patient and give them time.

I'm up to 60mg of clomipramine and still feel awful but have only been on this dose for 2 days having started on 25mg. What's the therapeutic dosage does anyone know? I'm very low and feel like I've run out of willpower to keep going/increase the dosage etc..

I;m up to 75mg in one dose per night (for 7 days)and am feeling like death/nauseous/aching/remote...not sure if I should keep going with this - any advice pl guys?

If you can manage it, if I were you I'd try to keep it up another couple of weeks and see then if you feel any better.

With me, it took several weeks for the worst side-effects to disappear.

i have been on chlomipramine for many years and it has helped keep me well enough to get back to full time work
there are noticable effects but i find them manageable

Hello, I was prescribed clomipromine for the first time on Wednesday. I've never had any kind of antidepressant before so it's all new to me. I'm only taking 10mg before bed. It does help me sleep but I woke up yesterday and today feeling so dizzy and sick. I feel completely spaced out, have blurred vision and have headaches. My hands are shaking a bit too.

I've not been able to go to work for the past 2 days because I'm so dizzy when I stand up. My heart also seems to be beating rapidly from minimal effort.

Is this normal!?

Yes this is all normal. You body needs some time to adjust to the meds and these are side effects which will go in time. Stay with it if you can I know it's ver hard but it will be worth it.

I tried clomipramine as a last resort after failing with so many SSRIs that the doctors had come to believe I was a time-waster. I stuck to my guns and finally some enlightened psychiatrist said I should try something from an entirely different group. Clomipramine had horrible side effects of tachycardia and tremor just as some people describe. These lessened, but never completely disappeared. BUT: after all those years of trying and failing with SSRIs, it was extraordinary to find the symptoms of social anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts melting away. I was able to do things which I had never done without fear in my entire life before. Over about three weeks (you need to stick with it that long to notice the effects) I went from being effectively housebound to going out and socialising. It has taken me some years to put my life back together, get a job, live independently and so on, and now I am managing this on Lofepramine, which has fewer side effects (though it's not quite so effective on the symptoms as clomipramine). But I do want to say to everyone who is feeling discouraged that you need to give clomipramine some weeks to take effect properly--a few days won't cut it. Just knowing that there is something which can work is encouraging and gives you a platform for exploring alternatives. The thing I found really striking was the noticeable difference in my response between this and the SSRIs--I'd tried about seven or eight and the most distressing symptoms simply weren't affected, or hardly at all. So stick with it--it's not an instant cure.

i tried Clompiramine after many ssris simply didnt help with my social anxiety.
like hercy i had to give up after 3 days because of the side effects.
i have to work so the effects were hard to hide.

you say you are on Lofepramine now,why the change if Clompiramine was doing the job?

I changed from Clomipramine because although it was the most effective at controlling the anxiety symptoms (I was able to do things I'd never done in all my life), I got: tachycardia which felt awful; tremor which led me to give myself a black eye on the edge of a doorframe and made it impossible to use a computer.
Lofepramine is, I would say, about 70% as effective as Clomipramine with regard to the social anxiety and depression symptoms I have had for many years. But it allows me to lead a 'normal' life, job, family, friends. Things I had not believed were possible for me. Together these drugs have totally changed my view of myself and my own capacities and I can only say that that is worth any amount of side-effects, and if I hadn't found the Lofepramine a good compromise I would have stuck with Clomipramine. But it takes several weeks before you really notice the good effects--at first, it's all bad.

I am back on clomipramine after trying citalopram and lofepramine. I am on a higher dose of clomipramine than I've been on before (150mg) and there have been some improvements in my social phobia - maybe a 30% improvement. I'm going up to 200mg soon - God that's a high dose! But clomipramine does seem to get to the parts other drugs don't reach.

Worst side effects for me are dry mouth and intermittent drowsiness. Weight gain isn't as bad as I expected on such a high dose.

I'm having the same problem although i'm on 100mg daily and its been almost 5 weeks since I started. My mood has improved slighty but the side effects wont let up. Will the side effects stop?

As a bloke I can vouch that it does dampen the performance. I cant speak for girls! How's it going otherwise with this medication? It worked for me for a while. Took a while to kick in. Made my guts slow down.

I can say that i have no interest in that area at all :( however being so depressed i'm not bothered about it, and in fact in may even be a help in some weird way.:shrug:

Since being on meds i seem to have forgot just what sex is:shrug: still thats life i suppose :huh::weep::weep:

11 days on 25mg anafranil. Week of nausea now anxiety soaring is this normal? Nausea has gone but have no appetite at all. At the moment it seems like the anxiety is being made worse which is something i can live without.

My appitite is just as strong but then again i have always used food in the past as a way of dealing with my depression.
