Does anybody have a fear of doctors? I feel like I'm the opposite of everybody on here.

On an average day, I have some symptoms of anxiety and/or panic, but generally it's not too bad. Very rarely do I have panic attacks during a normal day. But when it's time for me to visit the doctor, I absolutely go bonkers!! I end up in a full panic attack even when I call to make an appointment! Last month I had a virus. I went to the doctor to get some antibiotics and ended up in the hospital because of a fast heart rate! Turns out I was dehydrated (they couldn't draw blood because my veins were collapsing). The fast heart rate happened to me once before (over a year ago) and I was referred to a cardiologist who pretty much said "you have a fast heart rate - so what? You're anxious - it's normal!" And then he told me not to come back to the cardiologist because my problem is not cardiac related. It was such a horrible experience both times that I panic just thinking about going back to the doctor! Everything turned out fine, but I can't get over my fear of even calling to make a routine appointment! I'm afraid that this will happen again and that they will send me right back to the hospital! From what I have read on these boards, most of you don't have a problem going to the doctor to get checked out. I understand that they are there to help, but I can't get it through my head that I'll be OK!! Any advice on how to handle this? Does anyone else experience this? Deep breathing just doesn't work for me - it makes things worse.

Hi

I have a terrible fear of going to the doctors and hospitals and have had it ever since I started with my health anxiety. You would think I would feel safe in the doctors but I am terrified. Sitting in the waiting room I am a nervous wreck and can't stop my legs shaking and feel the need to run out so you are not alone with the doctors fear. I haven't been to the doctors for myself for about 2 years but even going with my kids gives me panic and anxiety. On Thursday I have to go to the hospital with my daughter for some results and just the thought of it is making my anxiety worse.

Hi

I too have terrible hospital phobia even though I actually work in one. I'm not too bad now with the doctors but in the past I have been a complete wreck in the waiting room.

Do you go on your own or do you take someone you trust? It might help if you do? Take a distraction such as a cross word, magazine or the like. Maybe it would help to gently and slowly get used to being in the building without actually having an appointment. This may sound a bit silly but working in a hospital has actually helped to ease some of my hospital phobia as familiarity takes a bit of the sting out of things.

I don't know if any of this helps but I really hope you feel better soon.

The funny thing is that I used to work in a cardiologist's office about 10 years ago, when I was a teenager. It was my first "real" job. And now I have a fear of doctors. I wanted to be a doctor when I was younger! I actually went to college for nursing! I wanted to help people and now I'm the one that needs the help! Ironic, isn't it?? I don't know what happened. I used to love the doctor/hospital environment and now it terrifies me! I don't know how to get back to the way that I used to be!!
