Firstly I want to say what a relief it is to find this website. I'm 25 and have suffered anxiety for as long as I can remember, so I feel a lot less alone now I've found this.

I've read the "eye related" threads but can't find my problem and wondered if anyone had any thoughts. Last Saturday (9 days ago) I thought I had recovered from a nasty flu virus and went xmas shopping. Felt fine but got back in the car and developed a shimmering spot in the centre of my vision. It's fairly small and doesn't stop me driving or anything as it is not a blind spot. I can see it with both eyes whether open or closed. Sounds like people describe with migraine, only mine won't go away...

I've basically had it ever since. Went to Moorfields eye hospital A&E and they can't find anything wrong with my eyes. That only served to make me more conviced I have some kind of brain problem! I can't eat, sleep, etc, and my work is really suffering. Has anyone heard of this problem and can it be anything other than something very bad?

I'd really appreciate your support. My family are sick to death of me and don't understand what it's like to have health anxiety. I really think it's great that this community is here.

Thank you

Faye xx

Hi Faye

I know how scary it is having visual problems - it has really freaked me out recently too.

I also had my eyes looked at. You should try to take comfort in that. I have heard it said that the eye is like a window into the body. A specialist can see evidence of hypertension, diabetes, ms and even any sort of pressure on the optic nerves from tumors etc.

I have been a nervous wreck over my vision problem for about 2 weeks now. I think I am obsessed with it and this makes it a lot worse. Opticians and doctors have all told me it is fine but to no avail. I have had a lot of facial pain with mine. Apparently, sinus problems can affect vision. Could you have some sort of secondary infection after the flu? I also suffer from TMJ disorder which is a classic for anxiety sufferers.

I believe there are also such things as opthalmic migraines which involve visual disturbance with no headache.

I hope this helps a little. This is a great place to visit to get reassurance and advice, especially as we are all in the same boat.

I hope you will be feeling better soon. x
