its about 3:30am US eastern time. i havent been able to fall asleep yet cause as i got done watching a movie i looked over at the side of my bed and saw a spider on the wall. ive always had a fear of spiders for a few years now and as time goes on it gets worse. i used to like some spiders like daddy long legs a long time ago but even those scare me now. but anyways it took about 20 minutes for my moms husband to kill it. he 'thought' he had killed it the first time and thought it had dropped. i still had the feeling it wasnt dead so i started looking for it. by this time i was a bit in tears and started to feel a bit of panic come one, but it passed, thankfully! but as i was looking for it i had spotted a smaller spider in my window sill so i called him back in. after i had sprayed some glass cleaner on the smaller one (he couldnt catch that one either) he was about to leave until he spotted the bigger one he thought he had killed earlier....... right above my head, on the opposite wall of where it was before. of course, when i looked up, i screamed (surprisingly i didnt wake anyone up) and i ran out of my room. he finally caught it and killed it and flushed it down the toilet :) but now im a bit reluctant to even go back into my room to sleep. im afraid that if i lay back down ill see another one.

does anyone have any idea's of how to get over the fear, or even to be able to squoosh those little things without having to wake people up in the middle of the night to do it for me?

im also told alot that 'since im 18 i need to "grow up" and "get over the fear" of spiders' exactly how should i deal with someone saying something like that? sometimes i dont want to ask anyone to help cause i dont want to hear that over and over again. of course it was said to me tonight. (sorry i didnt post it in the last post, it kind of slipped my mind)

Hey Shy,

Well, I'm 43 and absolutely terrified of spiders.

Last summer I was "held hostage" in the kitchen for over an hour, by a spider sat in the doorway. Everyone else was in bed and, because I couldn't walk past it, I was just stuck until it ran away [:I]

I've been advised to have someone put a spider in a jar and to then be comfortable with looking at it from a distance. When this is achieved (would probably take the rest of my life!), then start to stand nearer and nearer to the spider. The next step is to handle the jar with the spider in and slowly move up to touching the spider and then, finally, handling the spider!!

It's the "facing the fear" thing again, and not running away from it. Also, hypnotherapy may be another option that you might like to consider.

Best of luck!

This is one of the good things that has come from my marriage ending. I know longer have to be woke up in the middle of the night and chase a cranefly around the room for 15 mins until I catch it. ;)

I used to be petrified of spiders too and wouldn't stay in a room with one. However, since living alone I've had to deal with them myself and can now put a glass over one, slide some card underneath and then put the spider outside.

These fears are nothing to do with age and people have phobias of all kinds of different things.

Hypnotherapy could well help you with this phobia.

Hi there,
have not got a particular fear of spiders, my kids don't like them, so i have to 'get' them. i couldn't put them in a glass etc. just blooming squash them, try getting a pesticide spray? squirt all around your room, don't go in it for a while , it should kill any bugs etc...? not a very pleasant suggestion i know, but if it gets the little blighters! by the way people shouldn't tell you to grow up, get a grip etc. if we could, we would!

They're sneaky devils. Often I can be coming home, turn they key in the door and while one distracts me the other is on all fours/eights behind me, then his mate pushes me backwards and I fall over the other one. [:o)]

Sorry, I know this is actually a phobia but when we compare those little fragile things to us it is, logically, ridiculous. I do understand though because above a certain size and I won't touch them.

Did you know that the UK's are the most poisonous spiders in the world?? Their fangs are the wrong shape though so they can't inject their poison into us properly!! thank goodness!!

I HATE the little buggers too!! :D

Spider phobia is commonly sucessfully treated by specialist centres and takes 1 intensive day for most people. Exposure/ CBT therapy is used

If its bothering you enough you can ask for a referral.
