Hello My name is Shane i am 19 and new to the site bout 3 years ago while in the middle of my GCSE's my Nannie became ill with lung cancer and was taken in to hospital. She got told she was goin to die and was moved to a hospice were i made sure i visted her every day, The day which i couldn't see her was the day she passed away. Since then i have always blammed my self for not visting. This is when my panic attacks started, First it was the difficultly of being able to catch my breath and thought i was goin mad, Couldnt swallow, Didnt wanna eat scared of choking. Went to the Doctors who made me see a specialist in which this helped i also had an appoiment at hospital to put a camera down my throat to check. Got there just couldn't do it. After time this dispeared completly and i got back to my normal way of live. 1 month ago my grandad was taken in to hospital i was told he was gonna be ok. I was out in Southend the night he was taken in and back it came diffrent thore it felt like i couldn't swallow something covering the throat, stomach pains, Hot and cold. I just couldn't take it and did the silly thing by driving back home to Ipswich when i no now i should have stayed and fought it. Since this day i am having them most days the only time there go is when im in bed. I get them at college in cambridge whilst driving there. I get them at work. I just get so scared. Im worried i wanna be able to live a normal life like i did. I think people r looking at me cause i keep trying to clear my throat cause i think that its blocked it feels like cathare. Does anybody else get this??

P.S Sorry about spelling mistakes and the length

Thanks
Shane

Hi Shane,

Welcome to the site. What you are describing sounds like classic panic attacks and anxiety. The first thing to do is practise abdominal breathing and relaxation exercises - as soon as you learn to relax your throat muscles, you will find you don't struggle with breathing, swallowing or catarrh-like sensations.

I'm so sorry to hear about your nanny. You mustn't blame yourself for not visiting that day - it is not your fault and she would not have blamed you.

Hope to see you around the site soon,

Henri x

Hi Shane,

welcome to this forum. You're having anxiety feelings, which might be making your throat muscles all tensed up. Don't be scared, it's a very common symptom. You will never suffocate from it. As denise said, once you've cracked it, it won't come back again. It's all in the mind.

Btw, r u studying at Cambridge University?

Take care,
Sam.

One day, one day I will beat u and that day, I will be free again, as I was before...
