Hey Gary, I VERY recently got anxiety and depression symptoms over Xmas and told my parents this. I then came back to London and went to the Doc's to explain my situation and broke down crying etc

I then told my ex girlfriend about it, (broke down crying again) as I just wanted someone close to me to tell - I guess I'm the opposite to you, but I'm tired of bottling things up like a 'man'

Since then I have had a lot of support from them, calling me and reassuring me; give it a try - bottling it up for me was the worst thing I could do to myself

Hi Mark,
Im new too!

I think that Gary makes a very valid point when he refered to bottling it up like a man...i think that on the whole that men are socialised into supressing their emotions as it is seen as a sign of weakness in the western culture. However, this only leads to it coming out else where whether that be drinking, aggression, depression etc ...i hope you are able to use this website as a spring board to opening the lines of communication with your wife as having positive support networks assists with overcoming how we feel.

I was the same as you kept it locked in then one day after an unpleasant phone call I started crying at my desk. The next two weeks are a blur I have no real memory of what happened just cried and cried. Sought medical advice straight away and shared my experience with everyone I know and glad I did as now feeling much better and being weened of the drugs. Talking and sharing has been the best thing for me.

I found it really hard to tell anyone about this - although I'm usually quite an open person. I just think I am so ashamed of this side of me that I don't want anyone to know about it and so I prefer for everyone to think that I'm happy all the time. I decided to let my partner know (he's the only person I've told) and I found that I was able to tell him through showing him this site and other people's posts and saying which ones were similar to me. I didn't feel so bad about saying it when I could show that there were other people just like me.
