Hi all,
I've noticed since I've started keeping a diary how the mornings seem to be a worse time for my anxiety than the evenings. I guess it has a lot to do with what kind of nights sleep you get. Or is it the dread of the day ahead?
Also, anyone have any non medicine tips for better sleep? I've tried the usual warm bath/hot drink/soft music but I never seem to get a good nights sleep three nights running. I seem to be wide awake some nights at 3am, yet other nights I sleep well.

Yes I agree completely that first thing is the worst time for me. As soon as I wake up it kicks in. Sometimes it stays all day but generally it gets better as the day goes on. Just on general terms that is obviously depends greatly on how the day goes. The only thing I find that knocks me out is a nice glass or two of scotch whisky. Not all that helpful tho.

Mick, never worry about sleep or the lack of it bud, do you worry when you have had too much ? ! As a soldier i learned very quickly that the body does not need that much sleep and when it does it will let you know, you will just crash out. I fell asleep stood up once and awoke on the floor... ! How cool is that. If you awake at 3 am , great ! You get to see a part of the night which only night workers do, embrace it, its quiet and peaceful. Try telling yourself during the day that tonight you are going to have a really good sleep and of course smile straight away when you wake up ! / N

Thanks for replying,
That's a good way of looking at it Nicholas :D
Bora, i have a few glasses of wine in the evening, I think that settles me down.
Irony was, I had a good nights sleep the night that I wrote that post :yesyes:
Perhaps writing about it got it out of my system.
all the best

I have considered some sort of hypnotherapy/relaxation cd paddy.
They are cheap enough, I guess anythings worth a try. I do usually have some sort of music on when I first go to bed, but not really the type of music to fall off to sleep with. I seem to have problems actually getting off to sleep. My minds too active i think. Need to slow it down a bit.

anyways, thanks for replying

I am exactly the same, I feel really really anxious just after I wake up, I feel a sense of severe lonliness like I am trapped and can't get out, the memories of all the bad things that have happened to me in the past start to go through my mind and especially the things that really had a major affect on me.. It lasts about an hour because I tend to try and shrug it off whilst still lying down I try to gather and regroup my thoughts which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, so when it doesn't I just get up and do something even if I have not had enough sleep and still tired. This happens to me all the time and I wished it didn't.

I would agree that mornings are the worst time of the day, but it seems to have lots to do with the number of things I have to get through in the day. I think that my main problem is that I have trouble sleeping, waking up with panic attacks or from nightmares - I'm even told I've been sleepwalking recently. I find it helps to write a list of things I just have to do, and another of things I have to look forward to in the day (sometimes this backfires, but mostly I feel in control of what I'm worried about and a little uplifted).

I agree too that the mornings are the worst time for me. I was told by my Dr to get up and have a shower, and get busy and I find this does help, my husband is very good if he knows that I am up or not feeling too good he gets up too, the amount of times we have been out walking the dogs at 6.00am on the beach so that I can try and get my head together before he goes to work is vast. I find that I am also very tearful, about what I dont usually know, its like a release mechanism. Am I alone in this thought.?

Hi All

Morning is the worst time for anxiety sufferers it's an anxiety trait. Actually, it applies to depression as well.

When my anxiety was bad I would be trembly when I got up and feel very anxious. Thank god I don't get that now.

My advice is to get up when you wake up - yep even if it's 5.00 a.m. Make a cup of tea and then go back to bed and try to sleep if you can. When you get up - try to move about as much as you can - tidying the kitchen - whatever.

Re sleeping; another anxiety symptom of course. Mick what I found good were Nytol (non herbal) - they do contain anti histemine but they work well. The worst thing you can do is worry about not sleeping.

Hi Everyone!

I suffer badly from this awful morning anxiety too. Most mornings as soon as I open my eyes I feel the churning in my stomach and the anxiety building. I would love to be able to lie in sometimes like I used to, but it's impossible. The longer I lie there the worse it gets, so I agree that the best thing to do is to get up and do something before it takes a complete hold. If I don't I usually feel really bad for the rest of the day.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this happening in the first place?!!!

I am exactly the same in mornings and I hate it. I'd love to lie in 'anxiety free' :scared15:

I feel fine on waking up, then mid morning-lunch its suddenly kicks in, evening Im fine mostly. I find if I ever have a massive-lay in till lunch then I seem to be fine all day. I dont get it, also I find I tend be in the middle of doing something when it kicks in, I can be busy doing housework for instance and bang ! I also find if I skulk of to a corner or curl up in bed it reduces it, which is stupid as it contradicts trying to take your mind off it. Mabey its the comfort of being cuddled up that works who knows.

Hi

It is called diernal variation and is to do with the levels of seretonin in your system. It is a symptom of both depression and anxiety more so depression - as is the early waking you are experiencing.
Hypnotherapy really, really helped me and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
I used to listen to the radio before going to sleep and always thought this was relaxing, however, when I stopped I slept much better.
Hope you feel better soon, Nik x

OMG I can empathise with all of you. When I'm going through a non-anxious period (it seems to come in waves with me) I can lie in bed and doze at weekends for aaaaaaaages ... but then other times the churning stomach kicks in the minute I wake up. I try lying there, especially if its really early but all that happens then is that I end up getting in right old 'lather'. It's definately best to get up .. even if you don't want to

Hi I am new to this site and just wanted to say what a relief it wad to find out I am not alone in feeling worse first thing in the morning. Even on my weekends when I don't have to get up early I still wake up at six with that dreadful churning and wanting to rush to the toilet. It helped so much to realise what it is and that I am not alone. Sue

Hi all,

For me, my mornings are, for an instant, the best times because, for a few seconds when awakening, I forget my anxieties.

Sadly, they sometimes kick back in and so I put on my mental suit of armour and enter into another battle in my continuing war with this condition !

With respect to help in sleeping, my wife suggested an herbal tablet that she takes called HRI. They are available from Boots and I have to say they work for me. I have tried Nytol and other brands but they seem not to help so much.

Cheers,
krog.

Oh yes every morning, shaking, trembling, churning, nausea, It's called 'The Morning Blues' and is a typical depressive trait.( Seratonin levels have dropped in the night) Whether I've slept or not it's always there to greet me at about 4-5am Horrible. You just can't relax to get to sleep again that's if you've been asleep!!! I am also on the quest for suitable herbal remedy for sleep. I just want it to relax me and lull me off to sleep gently. I don't like the feeling of being 'knocked out' I still need this feeling of (being in control)
