Hi there,

Its my first post on here and am wondering if anyone can help me with my symptoms.

I am waiting on an appointment to see a mental health assessor but I am really struggling at the moment and it seems to be taking ages to come through.

At the minute my symptoms just seem to feel like my brain is running at 100mph and shows no sign of stopping, almost like my brain is on red alert all the time. It might not sound much but it is stopping me in practically every area of my life.

An example would be the more things I do such as try to go to work, exercise etc it seems to increase the speed of my brain if that makes any sense, making me a lot more stressed and the only time I can almost relax is if i stay in and do nothing.

It sorf of feels like there is some sort of conversation going on in my head if that makes sense, so i'm not sure if perhaps it could be some kind of ocd, i have alos had intrusive thoughts which im certain is ocd.

This has in turn damaged my confidence and am now very nervy about going out and meeting people and always feel a lot more steressed whenever I do anything even remotely challenging.

I am only young so perhaps I might be able to get myself better but there doesn't seem to be any help available.

I was also wondering if the best way to deal with these things are to try and distract myself or is it due to some kind of emotional issue when I was younger. For example if i were to see a counsellor would I be taught coping techiques or do they look back at your life and try to deal with the 'root cause' as i have read a bit about the subject but arn't quite sure what happens with an nhs therapist.

Anyway hope that makes sense and thanks for reading and would appreciate any advice if possible

thanks

hi Tony,

Welcome aboard!! :)

The symptoms that you describe are very familiar to me. I also get the feeling that my head is on overdrive and I often get the negative thoughts. I don't think that the thoughts are necessarily a side-effect of OCD. I have panic attacks and anxiety and mine are a side-effect of that.

There are different types of counsellor that you could see. A 'normal' counsellor would probably want to talk to you about your childhood, etc and try to figure out where your problems stem from. You could also try CBT which is about learning how to deal with the anxiety yourself by learning about thinking patterns, etc. Lots of people find that CBT really helps. It does really depend on the individual. Hope this helps somewhat.

Hi Tony,

Having racing and intrusive and obsessive thoughts are a normal part of anxiety and not necessarily to do with OCD at all.

Counselling is variable. The best sort for recent anxiety is CBT - don't be afraid to ask for it and check out any therapist who you might be referred to.

Try these to see if you can relate to any.

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

Hiya

Thanks Meg and seh for replying

I think probably a consellor who looks into past issues would be best for me. I think thats pyschotherapy. Because i've noticed lately that i've always had some kind of anxiety from a very early age but only realised recently. I've tried things in the past such as diverting thuoghts and stress but it hasn't really helped me that much.

I just feel a bit frustrated at the minute because its holding me back from getting on with my life as I think i'd be avle to have a great life if I didn't have this anxiety holding me back.

Tony - the way you're feeling is very normal. Why don't you ask your GP about being referred to a counsellor? :D

I have done a few weeks ago.

I've been referred to a mental health assesor but I haven't heard back off them yet so hopefully they should get back to me soon.
