Hi Guys, with my panic attacks I sometimes actually blackout. I am told that I fit and have on a couple of occasions very embarrassing woken up and realised I've wet myself. As stated in my previous posted thread today, I've had all sorts of tests and doctors can't give me an diagnosis for this, so all I can do is connect it to my panic attacks. I was once told by a therapist that it is physically impossible to pass out from a panic attack. However, on several occasions now doctors and a hypnotherapist have today me that it is possible but not common.

Does anyone else pass out whilst having a panic attack???

I would find your comments very helpful.

Thanks

I have never actually passed out but people can pass out with fear, think of people passing out at the dentist & men fainting when they see their missus in labour. It might be the fear thats making you pass out if the docs are saying they is nothing wrong. xx

I haven't passed out, but have come pretty close to it, you need to make sure you sit down when you feel one coming on, as your legs go to jelly and you may get worse then pass out. I would try grabbing a glass of water and sit the next time it comes on- also sit in a cold room!

Have you ever been seen by a Nuerologist? what have they said about the fits?

I passed out with my very first panic attack. I think it was a combination of panic, huge amounts of fear (thought heart had stopped) and standing up too quickly!

I think it's more shock than fear that makes people pass out? It might be when you hyperventilate that you pass out, as it can make you really dizzy. I've never heard of this happening but I can imagine it with a truly massive panic attack.

I have never heard of a panic attack causing someone to have a fit -- you need this checking out urgently. If the doctors can't find a reason for you to be fitting, and nobody with medical experience has confirmed you had a fit, then you probably DON'T have fits -- people probably see you have a spasm or something and think it's a fit.

I've never actually passed out, but a few times I've been very very close, although I think it's due to a mix of an overwhelming fear, and no energy. Likewise, I've never heard of anyone fitting before, but I've now just got used to the fact that everyone's are different and people deal with them in different ways, maybe it's your body telling you to slow down?

Hi, ive passed out a few times...i tend to hold my breath a bit too much to counteract hyperventilation (hard to explain) a combination of that and fear i think does it for me...tends to happen when im having a string of them one after another so maybe exhaustion plays a factor too x

Hiya,

Yeah I occasionally pass out when I have a panic attack - I think it must be the hyperventilation, so I don't understand why things you read say it is impossible to pass out during an attack. It makes sense to me that if you're dizzy there's a chance of fainting, but usually if I don't stand up and walk around I can prevent it.

I have heard that wiggling your toes stops you from passing out, it may be an old wives tale.
I have never passed out thank god.
it does seem unusual, have you had tests done?
check your heart for irregular beat and murmurs, a stress test, a MRI , blood tests, blood pressure.
they are certain types of epilepsy, some highly uncommon that can make you fit, although I'd say to see a specialist about that
i think because you pass out it would be good to rule out a physical cause.
if your doctor isn't helpful try a new doctor.
