I am taking sertraline which my psychiatrist says is a good drug for depression, anxiety and the obsessive thoughts I get. Its early days on it yet but does anyone out there have anything added to their anti depressant like an anti anxiety or anti psycotic? I understand that people with severe manic depression and schizophrenia can be helped by such drugs but is there a place for them in treating anxiety and depressive states. I have heard about drugs like respiridal and buspar etc, I know drugs like valium etc used to be used.

The reason I ask is that my friend is gettting married soon, I get more anxious around the time of social events to the point that I sometimes dont go and I dont want to let him down, the anxiety gets worse at the day approaches, will doctors prescribe drugs to help out in these situations, I am aware they dont want people taking heavy tranquilizers too much, are they any drugs that can help with severe anxiety, I know that in the long term an anti depressant and lifestyle choices are the answer, its just I am a bit nervous at the moment, do any of the modern drugs have anti obsessive properties.

Thanks, going out for a meal with friends tonite, if anyone can help that would be great

In the US they tend to use mood stabilizers more often but it just adds in another drug with more sideeffects etc so we're a lot more cautious here.

If you need a bit of calming , most doctors are happy to hand you out a few valium tablets to have on hand to use for emergencies ie flying, weddings, special events but don't expect a ready supply to be available.

Have you tried rescue remedy ?

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

Hi Frankie

I have found that rescue remedy is a life saver!!!! You can use it as often or as little as needed and its now like my comfy blanket.

Perhaps you could use a relaxation cd and listen to it from now until the wedding, helping your sub-conscious to get use to the situation by visualising the event?

Hope you had a great meal tonight.
