Hi everyone. This is my first time here and I'm so glad I found this website. I found it because I've been experiencing what I think are ectopic heartbeats (something I never knew existed) that really have me worried. I've been avoiding going to the doctor but decided I better to rule out any major problem. My huge worry is that she will tell me my heart has suffered major damage and I have six months to live to something horrific like that. I'm really scared and hope someone can make me feel better. I've only really been noticing these beats for the last couple of weeks but I seem to have them every day and sometimes they seem to go on and on for a few minutes.

hi alley
it does sound like missed heartbeats, a classic anxiety symptom and a very common amongst most of us here me included, they are not dangerous in any way and on the the home page under symptoms meg has done a great write up about it about how it all works like little drums that keep on beating. do go to the doctor just for reassurence, i was exactly the same i was scared he was going to tell me something bad but was a relief to know they are in no way dangerous but it does sound like anxiety its all to do with nerves and exersise and calmness can abolish them. hope this helps:D

I don't expect you've done any harm at all but do go and get a baseline ECG done and discuss it with your doctor.

hi Alley,

Welcome aboard!! :)

Ectopic heartbeats are very common amongst anxiety sufferers and can NOT hurt you at all. Do you suffer from anxiety? Seeing your doctor is a good idea though as it will make you relax about it a bit..

Hi Alley - I think my first post was on ectopic beats too. Its what brought me to the site (knew it was anxiety deep down).

Welcome to the site and I hope you get the reassurance you need.

Hello....I am new to this and have just been looking up stuff on the net about ectopic heartbeats. I have been suffering them for about two weeks now and actually have taken myself twice toi the hospital. I had an a heart enzyme test and that was normal, i also had a stress test on the treadmill and that was normal too but it did show my irreegular heartbeats, the dr said that it was normal. I have these all the time, like they never stop and sometimes i can have like 15 in a minute. Is this amount normal. I can feel them and they feel very uncomfortable. Why can't you feel yoiur pulse when they happen. If it is a heartbeat still, why is there no pulse. I don't get that part. Is it normal to have so many all the time non-stop. Just wondering...if I got some answers off anyone who knows the answers that might ease my mind a bit. I am still yet to have an echocardiogram and the 24 hour heart moniter test. Kind regards...Mandy

Hi there....cant believe I just wrote an essay to you and lost it...anyway, here goes again. Thanks for your reply. Yes I do have them all day everyday and so often. I have read everything on your website regarding this topic, and I guess, number one it's good to know that I am not the only biggest worrier in the world. My family think I am a bit of a joke, but it's just me...I can't change. But I wish these beats would go away. They are driving me nuts. How does everyong else ignore them. Medical type ????? Why don't you get a pulse when one happens and why then do you have a big rush beat.????? How can this not be dangerous. It doesn't make sense. I just want them to go away I guess. I do have a lot of woory in my life. I have six young children, my last two being twins with quite bad medical issues, and recently we put our house on the market. Sell up, have less financial stress ans a better lifestyle. I am wondering is this enough to stress a person out so much and give them these beats???????? I have always been stressed anyway.

Hope you can help with the medical type ???????'s as I want to feel normal.

Kind regards
Mandy

Hi all. At last I find that as my GP says, ectopic beats are very common and there are other people who get them. I too think my only anxiety is these horrid things. I've had them on and off for years, worse at moment but GP says its cos my hormones are out of balance in peri menopause. Waiting now to have 24hr ECG so I hope that stops me worrying about them..... I'll probably find something else to worry about then!!!!!!(I'm a nurse so should know better!!!!! Shouldn't I ???)

Hi. I'm 25 and have been suffering from ectopic heartbeats for about 3 years now. It really gets me down sometimes because I am fit and healthy in all other ways, but the ectopics seem to have a way of stopping me leading my life as i'd like to. For instance, I'll be going along, having a nice day out, and my ectopic beats will start and send me into a panic. This doesn't always happen as i've learned to live with them, but it has ruined a number of events for me and made me look pretty weird at work..... This site is so re-assuring. Just knowing there are loads of people out there going thro exactly the same thing is a big help to me. Just one question that I have. One of my friends, who is a final year medic, told me that you can grow out of ectopic heartbeats?? Is this true?? He said to me that I definitely grew into them, so i will also grow out... Any ideas??

Hi, It's comforting to know there are so many other people experiencing the same as you. I first had ectopic beats when i was about 21 - I'm 37 now. They lasted for a few weeks and then I didn't get them again until about 2 years ago. I then consulted a specialist who told me there was nothing wrong ith me and advised continuing running.

The ectopic beats returned again about 6 weeks ago and have been pretty much constant. The only time I had relief was when I ran. I ran a 10k race a week and a half ago and have had a week off training, in which time the ectopic beats have bee n really bad. I'm sure they're related to stress but would still like to rule out other causes. Anyone know if they're related to thyroid problems? I have a feeling mine are hormone-related as well.

Hi Amanda,

I am 46 and have ectopics 10 to 12 times a minute. I am past the worrying stage, especially seeing all the other posts from other sufferers.
I am currently awaiting blood test results which include a test for Thyroid problems. I will let you know.

Regards,

Gary

Hi Everyone

This is also my first post to this web site and I am pleased to find it as it
is helpful to make contact. I have been getting ectopic beats for almost two years and have had several tests, ecg,24 hour and 5 day recordings. I also have had a scan and the cardiologist says that they are not dangerous just very inconvenient!!!!!.
I do also suffer from postural hypotension which started at the same time as the eptopic beats.
I am prescribed midrodine for the low BP and propranolol for the eptopic beats.

like everyone I still find the eptopic beats very scary and do find that I often get a migraine after and sometimes feel quite drained.

Over the past few years I have had several very stressful events and as I am 58 am also in the menopause. I can't help feeling that in my case the condition was caused by.the stress and also could be hormonal. I don't know what caused it but any information is most helpful. So just wanted to say hello and that is my experience.

Hi and welcome to nmp. Yes i get them too, and like jodie said you can get them more with pre-menstrual tension. I also got them more with each of my pregnacies, something to do with the hormone imbalance...likewise true with peri-meno/menopause.

You'll get plenty of support...you're not alone.

Hi Mandy, welcome to nmp. As you can probably see from the other posts you're not alone with this one. Alot of ppl get ectopics and they can be scary. But your doc is right, coz alot of ppl go for these tests and the ectopics dont show up so this leaves the doubts when the doc says all is normal coz ppl then think, well how does he know if he hasnt seen them on the monitor? so at least yours have shown and he has seen them and still says all is ok. So try and believe him lol! we all have doubts about this and we all go back again and again for more reassurence, because they can feel so bad i know. And yes its normal to feel them so often as you do, sometimes my heart flutters also and this is also normal.

When you press your fingers against your wrist to feel your pulse, sometimes you can feel the 'gaps' that the ectopics or 'missed' beats leave, and this can feel as if you cant feel much of a pulse. Its nothing to worry about and your heart is strong, stronger than you think. People like us are just super sensitive to the missed beats etc so we feel them more strongly than other ppl. Interestingly, i think more women than men have this prob so maybe its because of hormones too. I got them more when i was pregnant and now am in menopause i get them more now too. Hormones have alot to answer to:mad:

Are you on any meds by the way? some beta blockers can make you pulse slow down or not feel as strong.

Hi Everyone
I am new to this site and hope that you can help.
I am a sufferer of eptopic beats, I have had these for two years. I have had lots of tests which should be reassuring but still these beats make me feel quite ill. I often end up with a migraine like headache or maybe it's just the fear I don't really know. I would love to hear any advice from others to help me cope better.
I have been prescribed beta blockers but do find they make me very tired and as I do have low blood pressure any way I don't really feel I want to be taking them all the time.
I hope this message reaches the forum and I get more familiar with the web site as I have read the articles and found them really useful.
Many thanks
Barbara B:)
