Once when my anxiety was bad, my mother reminded me of the story of the three sillies, which was in a book of fairy tales I had as a child. The story is here:

Today my brain is inventing all sorts of absurd 'what ifs' for me to worry about when things are going so well for me, so I am feeling exactly like the three sillies looking at the axe stuck in the ceiling.

Just thought I'd share this with you, as a wry look at anxiety.

What I keep asking myself, though, is why do I/we do this to ourselves?

Why is part of me trying to sabotage my own happiness? Why do I worry more, the better something is going? What is the purpose of anxiety? What is the purpose of worrying about unlikely scenarios (like axes in the ceiling falling on people) and making oneself miserably anxious?

Has anyone read anything or heard anything to explain what's happening in the mind?

Hello. That's a great story. If you read through the sections of the main menu (on the left) you will see that a great deal has been written to explain why and how we feel anxious.
