Have you seen doc to get it confirmed?

It is not that bad - not as bad as flu and you would know if you had it as you would not be on here posting asking.

Loads of posts about it so do a search

Personally I am fed up of hearing about it and I am in the high risk group!

I was terrified of getting swine flu, then I got it, felt rubbish for a couple of weeks, and am fine now! In the vast, vast majority of people it's a really mild illness, and I think they're only prescribing tamiflu to high risk groups. Just look after yourself same as you would with any other flu-type illness, and you'll be better soon :)

Anyway see what they say when the dr rings me later on.

Just thought I would let you know.
I had my test back earlier this afternoon and it was confirmed I had this swine flu bug.
I've been started on Tamiflu 75mg twice a day and been told to rest up and drink plenty of fluids.
It was quite a performance getting the tamiflu voucher and getting someone to go to the collection centre for me.
The symptoms I had were fever, headaches and quite a bad sore throat.
I have to say that the 'normal' flu I had last winter was far worse than this.
I hope this helps anyone who is worrying about getting it.
I was worried they would hang a sign outside my front door saying "KEEP AWAY" but at the moment that hasn't happened :D

My gp rang me back ealier and said that she doesnt think i have it as i didnt sound too bad to her?? but to keep an eye on the symptoms and if i get worse to ring them back. So im relieved but curious how they can tell by your voice you dont have it, but im grateful :)

I apparently had it end of may beginning of June. I posted on here to say I had flu. I have been told this had to be swine flu as there are no other 'flu' bugs around and itsout of season by my GP and nhs direct. I did not recognise ANY different symptoms from ordinary flu apart from the headaches which were a bit odd as headaches go. I did get a bit breathless but I was sooooo flu'd up it was a normal consequence of it to be honest. Its shocking that healthy people have died from it but it does happen as we all know. Please remember its flu, and its pretty unavoidable. Unless something has changed in this flu, I can honestly say, honestly honestly honestly, its just like ordinary seasonal flu. well it was for me.

ok my little girl is not so good she has a sore throte and what i would call a cold, but in the back of my mind i am thinking could it be swine flu i am not to worried at the min but would be if she got worse.
i know there is a lot about this on nmp and in the media and i can relate to how alexy and others are feeling ,with us having anx and pa,s we do seem to grasp onto things like this and worry to much.

so can i ask what happens if u think u have it does the doc have to take blood test ? how long does it take to come back ? and how long are you on pills for ?

mick_uk
14-07-09, 21:31
my test was a swab test jodie and my result came back within 3 hours.
I then had to get someone to collect a voucher for the tamiflu at a centre.
I have five days worth of pills (10 tablets) and was told that should do the trick.
It comes in a liquid form as well for little un's.
If you at all worried phone the doc and get them to advise you jodie.
The flu i had last winter was far worse than how i feel now.

take care

Jodie, either ring your gp out of hours as soon as poss OR NHS direct I am not trying to scare you by saying this but from experience if you want your daughter to have the tamiflu medication then you have to request it as soon as the symptoms come on. I suspect my 11 year old may have it and rang my gp yesterday and becuse it has been longer than 24 hours they won't give him the medication. Mad eh! He has a bad cough still but is much better. Its up to you whether you want your daughter to have the medication or not. Over here particularly in the west midlands, they are not testing for it anymore but just treating any suspected case.
hope this helps and DON'T WORRY. There is nothing to panic about.

Ok i do think the is becoming a huge worry for people now! When we were first told about it, it seemed a million miles away but now we all seem to know at least someone who has it.

Mick... Sharing your experience has been a fantastic help and i am sure you have helped to ease quite a few peoples minds.

Of course we are all going to imagine the worst but like Mick explained, he has been diagnosed and is still fine.

I hope all who are infected make a very speedy recovery and thanks again Mick for sharing!!

Lots of love

Mick

Glad to hear you are keeping a sense of humour!! I was 'quarantined' last week along with my best friend Tamiflu....... not a confirmed case and pretty mild although I didn't feel well. Was some of it contributed to by my health anxiety I guess I will never know??

Back at work this week and pleased to be rid of the tablets - not pleasant, but necessary!

I agree with other posts that the press do not help in our (my) situation, I want facts and not speculation which in some cases have shown to be incorrect.

I am very worried for my kids. I dont give a monkeys uncle about me. My eldest son gets Virul induced wheezing and usually has to be put on steroids when he gets a bad cold. This virus seems to be getting the young uns !!!

All I hear on the news is about healthy kids and Adults dying. I feel it is Armageddon.

Hope everyone the best. I feel this virus could last quite some time.

The doctor who has recently died from swine flu did not actually die of swine flu. He died of a blood clot in his lungs which was not swine flu related. He also had pneumonia and summat else. He just happened to be suffering from swine flu when he died.

Once again, the papers get it wrong.

hi. this is bit of a long post but need to explain situation before you can understand my worry.

Ive not been on nmp for a while but with all this s.flu business my HA is getting out of hand so i thought i better "check in".

So, last tuesday my sister rang me to say my niece and my nephews girlfriend have both been given tamiflu as they are suspected as having swine flu. i immediatley panicked as i had spent a few hours (not in close proximatey, but in same room) as my niece one week prior to this.

within an hour i had a sore throat and felt generally rubbish. i kept telling myself this was a coincidence. during the night i woke up freezing, it was a hot sticky night as the weather had been good so this immediately worried me. why should i wake up so cold. also my throat felt worse and i was achey.

i rang nhs direct and was given a call back by a doc who told me, as i didnt have the high temp associated with s.flu they wouldnt issue me with any drugs but to ring doc surgery first thing in morning. obviously i didnt sleep all night thinking i was going to get worse and die before then.

rang doc following morning and, as is the practice with all of this s.flu thing, had a phone consultatation where they said they would give me the meds, as i had the majority of the symptoms even though i didnt have the high temp. but also as i had been in contact with someone who had suspected s.flu.

i started the relenza (cant take tamiflu as im 26 weeks pregnant, which is more of a worry!) for suspected s.flu. over next couple days I didnt feel any worse but just felt pretty rubbish, but not what you would call fluey up until friday.

Friday i woke up with classic flu symptoms, felt dreadful, really knocked out but still no high temp. felt like this all of the weekend, drank loads of fluid, kept on with the s.flu meds and took paracetamol every 4 hours.. still no temp but i think for me, i maybe did. they class high temp as 38 and mine was 36.8 at its highest. but i think its usually alot lower when im not unwell, so maybe it was high for me if you know what i mean.

anyway, my worry is, i dont think i initially had s.flu on the tues when i took the meds. but i think if at all i did maybe start with it on the fri. by which time i only had 1 and a half days left of treatment and so i think i started the meds too soon and finished too soon. i know it was still in my system but maybe not in the right time period as the doc said the best time to start taking the meds is within the first 24-48hrs of first symptoms. which i think in my case, if it was s.flu was the friday.

sounds like im being a fruit cake here but now im worried, it will come back worse, or worse still, i didnt have it and if i do get it now, i know for a fact they wont treat it as the doc told me they are only issuing one lot of meds per person.
im scared now if i do get it, i cant treat it.

i hope in a way i did get it as at least then i have good chance of not getting again.

also i started to feel better by the monday but today i feel awful again, not as bad as at the weekend but still rough. so did i have the meds for long enough, know what i mean? or if you do have a flu type illness is it normal to feel washed out and keep getting the odd symptom for few days after?

sorry to ramble. this has been building up for ages!

also to mention, i think i prob did have it, as now my son is being treated with tamiflu due to his symptoms. although once again, no high temp
sarah

ps, can HA really cause symptoms like this? i know the mind is a powerful thing and you can read something then get the symptoms!

ps sorry again, god its a long post!

The expected mortality rate in the UK is 0.5%.

This means that 99.5% of people in the UK who contract swine flu will recover from it.

I might be the odd one out, but I feel reassured by odds like that.

hey guys - not sure if my story will help anyone but here it is:

when swine flu first appeared, i was so terrified i did not leave my house for a week or so. if i did leave, i did not touch anything, wouldn't use ATMs, etc.. and this is VERY unlike me. i am not agoraphobic, i have a full time job, i am very high anxiety but very functioning and the outbreak of the flu freaked me out so much it turned me upside down. i went on doing that for a couple weeks and then my grandma ended up in the hospital for emergency colon cancer surgery. she is old but in great shape, she basically raised me, and i was devastated. i had to MAN UP and get out of my retarded swine flu stupor and go to the hospital and sit with her.

i have been at the hospital every day for several weeks now, and many people are in confinement, have various infections.. MRSA .. contagious rooms, or flus or ailments and yes at first i was scared and freaked out and tried not to touch things but then i was like, ok snap out of it. i'm still careful and i was my hands a lot .. but seriously, i had to get over it.

i can't live my life in fear like that and it's so harder to do than to say, but i had to force myself to shelf the fear. watching these doctors go room to room while laughing and talking and perservering gives me strength and positivity - they do this every day and they see everything and never fear or complain, and they're taking care of my beloved gma. anyway this is how i got over my swine flu fear. by thrusting myself (unwillingly) in the middle of it and realizing, there's lots of scary crap out there and all we can do is our best to protect ourselves and be well, while still living life.

Hi, everyone, i've just been in a state of complete panic lately with this swine flu thing. My biggest problem is that i am 13 weeks pregnant, with bad sickness and daily vomiting so i already feel pretty rubish. getting the flu, in this state, i don't know how i'd get through it, i feel so scared and pretty depressed about it at the same time, i hardly get out of the house, and as far as i'm concerned i'd just lock myself in here and keep safe lol but i can't lock my partner in as well lol i feel i am going crazy over this really.

15-07-09, 22:52
The fatality rate is actually lower than that of seasonal flu, it's just affecting a slightly different demographic. Even the 99.5% recovery rate is something of an understatement, as that's 99.5% of people who were ill enough to seek treatment, and the specialists reckon that loads more people have had it without seeking any medical service, because they just had very few symptoms. Blame the media for causing the panic, just like bird flu. Anyone remember the SARS virus? That didn't come to anything either, newspapers just want a story. I know it's hard not to worry, but even if you get the virus just treat it as no different from seasonal flu, and you will be fine :)

Meewah
15-07-09, 23:39
I feel I would rather the media tell us about all health treats than not know. I feel they should be monitored as not to cause panic or unnecessary worry in the masses.

You have a choice to listen or watch the media. I sometimes turn the radio over when the news comes on. This just limits the bad news being repeated over and over so that I will obsess over it.

I had to take my daughter to the out of hours tonight, she was really unwell with a temp and headache, I was dead worried about her so was told to go to A&E. Big mistake coz got there and there were 3 people in the waiting area huffing and puffing and saying they had swine flu:-( they looked really ill with back pains and coughs.

I am now petrified we will of caught it, after half an hour of waiting I refused to wait there and came home. This lady kept walking around and past me huffing and puffing. She didn't cough or sneeze near me but she huffed and puffed near me so i breathed in her air. I am so scared, will I of caught it this way??

16-07-09, 01:44
Ok here is the advice

Q. is it fatal?
A. very rarely, so far the UK has had 10,000 cases this may rise to 100,000. There have been 20 deaths which in fact is a low number

Q. what are the symptoms
A. A fever of 38c (100.4f) along with a cough, sore throat or runny nose.aches and pains, headache, lack of appetite, and maybe feeling lethargic. Remember these are also signs of normal flu. You may also have vomiting

Q is tamiflu a cure
A no but if taken within 48 hrs can shorten the illness time

Q.How long does the bug last
A. in most cases just over a week

Q.How can I avoid getting swine flu
A.The immune system is important, so eat well and take vits

Q. I was on the bus with someone that had it, will I catch it
A. most likely you wont and it takes a lot of contact with the individual to catch it

So to sum up

Sure there is a risk but its very small and there is NO NEED to be overly alarmed at this time

Lissy43
16-07-09, 08:11
That is reassuring, where did you read that you have to have alot of contact to catch it?

mick_uk
16-07-09, 08:20
I've had it since monday and I was told providing you use sensible hygiene and obviously don't start sneezing or coughing over people then it will be fine.
I have someone who has been my link to the doctors since i've had it and they have done some shopping for me and they are fine. I was told if this person does develope any symptoms then obviously they must contact the doctor.

Lissy43
16-07-09, 09:08
Thanks Mick,

So you doubt that just from being in the same room we will have caught it? I got home and washed us thoroughly and used the hand gel as soon as we left the hospital.

mick_uk
16-07-09, 09:31
The hand washing is important, but from what I was told by the doc, many many people already have it but will never show any symptoms or if they do they will be in a mild form of the flu. Mine is a mild form of flu,and I think i caught it during a hospital visit(how ironic). There were two people, one coughing and the other sneezing! Someone appeared quite quickly and asked them to leave. They were visiting someone in hospital (how dumb is that!).

Lissy43
16-07-09, 09:31
I am just hoping we have escaped it but I doubt it if these people did have swine flu. My husband seems to think that they would not be allowed to sit in the waiting area if they did but who knows.

Lissy43
16-07-09, 09:33
Oh dear Mick, were you sat near them then?

This lady just kept walking around huffing and puffing and saying her back was throbing from sitting. She was snuffly but not sneezing or anything.

Hubby seems to think that the triage nurse who you see first would not of allowed her to sit in the waiting area if she had suspected swine flu.

PUGLETMUM
16-07-09, 10:03
i have found the advice on nhsdirect about swine flu to be very helpful and encouraging - as with others on here i do worry about my health - but i would just say that chronic anxiety is far worse for you than a dose of a new flu strain (which has proven to be relatively mild) - i would advise ppl to deal with their anxiety first and formost - nothing seems as bad and you can deal with everything confidently when you get that sorted

ive had the same problem with keeping the temp down.
Adults can take other medicines with tamiflu, ive been taking paracetomol and sudafed for the last two days but i'm not sure if little ones can take those type of things.

The little ones can continue to take calpol while taking the tamiflu. Its the weirdest thing, because one min he seems ok normally just after the calpol but then his temp suddenly goes sky high and he looks really unwell. He threw the tamiflu up as soon as I gave it him. For info, the little ones get the tablets exactly the same as an adult and you have to open them up and mix with something. Mick are yours 30mg? was just wondering if the little ones get a lesser dose.

I take 2 -75mg a day mummyto4,
It does make you feel sick, but i found out that by eating just before it and a little after taking it,i get no sickness at all now

kenboon,I really do feel a lot better now on day 3 of it. ive taken other cold/flu meds with it to help with the symptoms until the tamiflu kicks in

i cant type tonight...must be the heat

ah, so the kids are getting a lower dose. I was a bit worried he was having the same dose as an adult when they gave me them.
